There’s a widening gap between the rich and poor in Ghana; and that’s a noose we must quickly break.
Our people are not poor because they are lazy. Our people are not poor for lack of trying.
This thatch classroom block was built by the parents in the village with the resources available to them, so that their kids can be in school too.
A single V8, out of the many in our presidential convoy, can build a decent classroom block and furnish it too.
We drive V8s and borrow from countries whose leaders walk, catch a train or cycle to work;
trading our destinies and the future of our children to fuel expensive lifestyles.
Beautifully garnished poo is still poo.
A decorated beggar is still a beggar.
African leaders and nations cannot demand the respect they are not willing to earn.
We are royals riding in borrowed palanquins.
I was hoping that in my lifetime, we could break the “ram and mirror for gold” curse but every action by those who lead us shows they are comfortable sitting on gold and begging for brass.
And since it’s a democracy, we the people cannot pretend we don’t deserve the leadership we elected.
We must take responsibility for placing party above nation, for only seeing through political eyes, for only calling out the wrongs that don’t benefit us, for placing self above village.
