Ayden wandered slowly through the outdoor art exhibition, taking his time to analyze each piece. He heard about the event from his agent, who suggested he go to make some connections and possibly help discover an upcoming artist for her to represent. Of course, he didn’t mind at all since he loved looking at art almost as much as he loved making it.
He stopped as he walked up to a piece that particularly caught his attention, wondering silently how it related to the theme of the show: queer art.
He glanced over at the person standing near the work, and flashes them a smile. “Are you the artist?”
Nyx looked up from the table of smaller pieces she’d been arranging at the voice. She’d been able to sell a few mugs and vases, but the bigger pieces, the ones she’d really labored over, those would be harder to get someone to spring for-- the prices were displayed much smaller on those, as if she was too shy to even ask for money. She didn’t expect them to sell, but it was nice to have some recognition-- and to make some cash where she could, as recognition didn’t pay the bills.
“Oh, yeah-- you know who she is? All the Greek chicks pretty much look the same, but I tried to give her a nice gay smirk and really short nails.” She was referring to the rather large statue sculpted from clay, posed as if she was a modern lesbian, lips resting between two of her fingers. “Sappho. I’m no Michelangelo, but-- I kinda love her.”
Despite being rather lost in her own thoughts as she gathers her groceries and reads through some of the packaging, Noor could tell someone was watching her. She was fairly certain it was her hair - or at least the various, brightly-colored clips and kitsch accessories - the person was admiring and/or judging, something she had honestly expected. “My daughter insisted on giving me a Mother’s day makeover. I promised I’d wear it out of the house.”
Nyx was a little embarrassed when the woman made eye contact-- she’d seen her in and out of the aisles, and it was hard to ignore her look. After the Met gala, she was especially fascinated by what appeared to be quite campy-- intentionally excessive. She broke into a smile when she spoke. “Oh-- no, yeah, I love it, especially now. That’s so cute. I just thought you were really into unique accessories, which-- is totally valid in itself. She did a pretty damn good job.”
We should all be feminists.

The wait for Nicola to open the door gave him ample time to start considering whether he should just go home. When the door finally opened and he noticed Nicola was still clad in pajamas, a blush colored his face and he turned his eyes to the floor, fidgeting with his hands. Guilt like angry bees swarmed in his stomach for interrupting her morning. She wasn’t exactly telling him to fuck off, so after a moment, Orion lifted his head again and shook his head, managing to quip in a quiet voice, “Trust me, you would think a tornado whacked through where we lived before my brother met his wife.” And if it weren’t for Coraline, the apartment Cyrek lived in now would be absolutely trashed rather than just Orion’s room. Nevertheless, he was grateful that the part-time Lyft driver was available, running his tongue across his lower lip and debating how to explain himself. “Just… some bad… stuff going on with my family and I have been in a poor mindset, I thought it would be ideal for me to do… something that was not just wallowing in it. Or as the French say, se vautrer.” What he was trying to communicate, awkwardly, was he thought it would be preferable to focus on something that wouldn’t leave him to rot in his current headspace. “I could pay you back by…” The artist’s eyes flitted to her mug of coffee and back again. “Cooking breakfast? I make amazing crepes.”
Nyx could tell he was at least a little uncomfortable and shifted slightly so she wasn’t blocking the doorway, hoping that would make it all seem more welcoming. She smiled at his comment, figuring it was easier for artists to forgive each other’s chaos-- all the unglazed pieces sitting around and clay-splattered T-shirts and aprons draped over furniture were more acceptable in context, even if it all looked overwhelming and gross to outsiders. “Did he clean his shit up for her or did she have to push him along? I always wonder what happens when super-messy people get in relationships with someone who won’t put up with it.” Her forehead wrinkled slightly at his next words, a little worrisome, but she just nodded and gestured slightly with the mug, careful not to spill. “Yeah, sure, come in.” She’d done her share of wallowing, but being productive, getting up and making shit, had definitely served her better, short- and long-term. “I mean-- you don’t have to. But you can if you want, I won’t stop you. Assuming I have crepe ingredients. That’s a big if.”
Tell me how’s it feel sittin’ up there Feeling so high but too far away to hold me You know I’m the one who put you up there Name in the sky Does it ever get lonely?
Omg you should get out more, you're adorable and we'd all like to get to know you <3
Oh-- well, thanks! Usually when I’m out, I’m driving people around, but-- maybe I’ll try to spend more of my free time away from my apartment. I didn’t know the whole city was feeling deprived of my presence.

The artist could use a distraction. Something that involved doing anything beyond plaintively sitting in his emotions like an ice bath when Micah was out during the day. What better solution than to focus on art? Everyone else would be pressed to take a break from art in times of suffering, but for the philosopher, it drove him to participate in it further. Hopefully not in a psychotic pretense this time. It had been a while since he had seen Nicola, figuring it couldn’t hurt to stop by her place. Naturally, texting people felt like too much effort right now. Frankly, going out and leaving the apartment felt excessive. Nevertheless, Orion had managed to persuade himself that an attempt to do so would be appreciated by… someone. Rapping on the door to her apartment, he hoped the ceramic artisan was home, starting when the door opened. Relax. Everything is fine. “Hi… I was wondering if… you had some time. To make some art. Or if you would be interested… Is this a bad time?”
Nyx had been splitting her morning between laziness and productivity, trying to decide if she was going to spend the afternoon driving. She’d been out until four the previous night, so she figured she could justify a day off, but she hadn’t totally settled on it yet, and was pouring some coffee into a mug-- one of her own, actually-- when there was a knock on the door. She hadn’t spoken to anyone who sounded likely to come over recently, so she went ahead and poured some coconutmilk creamer into the mug before heading to answer it-- maybe they had the wrong apartment and if they had a little extra time to look at the door, they’d leave before there could be an awkward encounter. Once she had stirred her coffee, though, she headed over to look out of the peephole, surprised to see someone she knew. She slid the bolt open and opened the door with a somewhat sheepish smile-- considering her apartment was not in great shape and she hadn’t even put real clothes on yet. “Hey... um, yeah, I-- I’m-- available. If you don’t mind the mess. Not driving today, so, might as well. What’s up?”
“Well–damn, isn’t that pretty?” He was referring the fireworks above, evening sky illuminated with close and short-pinched eruptions, bursting into various colors and Drew was once again struck with nostalgia. He hadn’t returned here in such a long time, way too stacked with responsibilites that he had been wanting to abandon for the past few years. “Brings back a lot of memories. I used to come here with this girl that I really liked, don’t know where she is now, don’t know if she’s even alive. She was pretty screwed last time.” He shrugged. No one asked, but he’d always been one to overshare. “Happy New Year, I guess.”
Nyx was sitting nearby, idly nodding as he spoke, figuring he wasn’t really expecting a response. She was waiting until later to open her car up for rides, knowing she’d be busy until the sun came up. When he delved into his ex, though, she looked up, eyebrows raised. “You don’t know if she’s alive? Damn, dude.” She didn’t really know what to say to that--this conversation hadn’t really been on her agenda for the night, at least not until she was tasked with driving a bunch of drunk people home. “Yeah, you too.”
