As Day 1 of Black Alternabreak in Oakland comes to a close, we would like to thank the Draper Center, OBSA, the student coordinators, and community of Oakland for the opportunity to travel to this historically Black neighborhood. Students participated in workshops hosted by Critical Resistance, an organized movement to dismantle the the prison industrial complex, visiting local restaurants, and ending the evening with a Jazz performance at Koshi's Oakland Restaurant.

“Hi Friends, I’m Nick Daily, the newest addition to the OBSA family! I earned a Bachelor's degree in Women's and Gender Studies from University of Redlands and a Master's in Education in College Student Services Administration from Oregon State University. My interests include dialogues around social inequality, histories, intersecting identities, creating possibilities and video games. My life philosophy, LuvServedDaily - The consistent pursuit of happiness for self and others, guides my work with students and how I seek to engage students in their journeys of self-discovery, identity, humility, trust and love. My primary focus in OBSA will be on creating leadership and structure around the Arts Engagement program that OBSA is building. I am so excited for the opportunity to learn with and connect with you all! Come by and introduce yourself and let me know your ideas around arts engagement!”

Cynthia Nyongesa (pictured below) is a 19-year-old freshman at Pomona College from Nairobi, Kenya. Her passion for art started through the vessel of art therapy and has been drawing ever since. Most of her artwork consists of cultural influences and her imagination:

Josefina Modeste is currently a first year at Pomona College. She is 17 years old, from Brooklyn, NY. Though primarily self-taught, she has always been very passionate about art. Her drawings mainly consist of figure drawing and portraiture.
Jasmine David, a freshman at Pomona college is originally from Brooklyn, New York but currently lives in Connecticut. She started doing ceramics for years ago and has been passionate about it ever since. Her main form of ceramics is pottery.
Sajo Jefferson of Pomona College is one of our featured artists for the 2nd Annual Black Arts Festival: Preserving Legacy: Between the World and Us. She will perform along with our other artists on FRIDAY, FEB 19, 11am-3pm at Scripps College, Seal Court.
My name is Sajo Jefferson and I am currently a first year at Pomona College. Music has been an essential part of my life since I was born; I began my experiments with the guitar at the age of 6 and singing followed shortly after. Amherst, Massachusetts is home for me, a place where my creativity was nourished by so many inspiring mentors. I hope to launch into writing and performing music more seriously as a college student and throughout the rest of my life. My performance will be live and can be anywhere from 10-20 minutes long.
