“here, take a seat,” ella said as she gestured at a chair near hers. then, she poured clara a hot cup of tea, careful to give her just enough- not too much nor too little. she was also careful not to sound suspicious as she asked, “where are you and gabi heading out to today?” she wasn’t suspicious, after all; just curious! and maybe just being a little protective of her daughter. “oh! would you like cream and sugar?” she quickly added.

“thank you so much.” she smiled and slid into the seat and watched the tea get poured in front of her. she wasn’t a big tea drinker, but she liked it enough. “we’re going to karaoke. someone told me about this really fun place and i can never pass up the chance to go to a karaoke bar.” it sounded weird, but it was the truth. “sugar, please.”

“so lovely to see you, clara!” ella smiled at her daughter’s friend. she had heard rumors around all of auradon that clara glucksburg was nothing but a no-good party girl, but ella didn’t believe that, or tried not to, anyway. she didn’t know clara as well as her children did, and though some in the castle claimed that clara was a bad influence on gabi, ella, being idealistic as ever, tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. she seemed to be a nice enough girl, after all. “gabi should be in her room, getting ready, i believe,” she told the young princess. “would you like some tea while you wait for her?”

“oh! it’s nice to see you too.” she smiled, and honestly surprised that she was being greeted so nicely and warmly. not that she thought ella was mean or cruel, but most parents who heard the same rumors about her aren’t usually this welcoming. “i’d love some tea, thank you for the offer.”

“hopefully i can get over my fear…one day.” it hurt that she had a talent she was too afraid to use, but every time she even thought about singing in front of someone she choked up.“but, clara, things aren’t so black and white. how can you have faith that it will work out if it’s meant to be if you avoid talking to julien all together? some things you have to help out to make it work. it’s not magic.” lyric sighed and shook her head. “im sorry… i really do think he’d at least like to hear from you.”

“one day.” clara repeated with a smile and a nod. not everyone could be as outgoing and free spirited as she was, and she understood that. she did look over at lyric, eyebrows coming together in confusion. “i’m not ready to talk to him, lyric. i will eventually, but...i don’t know what to say.”

ella sighed to herself, then sipped some tea. there were papers to be read, laws to be upheld, speeches to be prepared, yet ella couldn’t make herself concentrate, not today. being queen was never easy, but it could be fun, when she played with children in orphanages or visited local businesses and farms. this, however, was boring- necessary, but boring. luckily, she heard footsteps coming around the corner, as if the universe knew she could use a proper distraction. “hello?” ella called out as she smoothed her skirt.

clara was let in by the guards, and she gave them a wave as she walked by. she’d been here many times visiting various charming children, but lately she’d been closer to gabrielle. she loved having a new friend, but she wasn’t sure how her parents felt about their newfound friendship to be honest. when she heard someone who wasn’t gabi call out, she jumped a little. “oh, hello your majesty! i was just looking for gabi. we’re going out.” she gestured down to her outfit.

“maybe one day, then we can release an album together.” lyric could dream but she barely liked talking in front of a group of people the thought of singing paralyzed her to the core. “im sorry to hear that, i wish it was different for the both of you. you deserve so much better. but will it ever be easy to be with someone? for any of us? i find it so hard to think that we are just here to be hounded about anything personal in our lives.”

“that would be amazing! if you were ever comfortable with it, you know i’d be down.” clara grinned for real this time. she’d love to sing with her sister, but she’d never force lyric to do something she doesn’t want to do. “you don’t have to be sorry. if it’s meant to be, it’ll work out. i have faith in that.”

“do you ever have a feeling like something is about to happen?” clara turned to the person next to her, tilting her head in response. “like good or bad, anything can happen. i have that feeling in the pit of my stomach and i don’t know what to make of it.”

“i am honest though. you know i love your singing more than anything. i just wish i was as confident.” she said brushing her sister’s hair behind her ear. “you are so talented, clara and i love it.” she said. lyric smiled. “but… if you two are happy…maybe you should try. being there through it all together. you shouldn’t give up something good just to avoid all that terrible media.”

“i wish you were more confident, too. you’re amazing and you should know that, you know?” she smiled at her sister, even though it seemed a little sad on her end. “i don’t know. there might be too much hurt between us now. and i’m definitely not ready to talk to him. avoiding him for two weeks is going to be a challenge.”

“that is so not true, i could be really mean about it and say i hate your singing. but i don’t and i hate lying.” she smirked as she was nudged, doing the same to clara. she felt for her sister, she knew clara was always happier with julien…even if no one knew. “clara…im sorry. but you don’t know if it would be ruined. maybe it could have worked out. you seemed so happy with him.”

“you aren’t a mean sister. a meaner sister could be honest.” a sister like willie or melody, even if she loved them both dearly. if she wanted an honest opinion, she would go to her brother but she wasn’t always ready for brutal honesty. “i don’t...i’m not ready for that. rumors about cheating about every guy i look at or something else they made up? he’s not used to it. it takes a toll.”

“i know they are. you are an amazing singer, clara. if someone didn’t like your songs they would be insane.” she said with a smile. “i always just wanted you to tell me when you were ready… im sorry i never said anything.” lyric nodded her head at her sister. “but julien has been good, still sweet as ever… but i have to ask. why did you two break up?”

“you have to say that. you’re my sister,” she nudged lyric with her shoulder. “but thank you. and you don’t have to apologize, i’m just surprised you never said anything. anyone else would’ve called me out...i’m glad you didn’t though.” she sighed and hugged a pillow to her chest. “he wanted to go public. he thought i was embarrassed of him or something, but i just didn’t want to have it ruined, you know? it always gets ruined once people know.”

lyric nodded. “i still think any is a lot but im excited to hear it all together. im so happy for you, clara.” she said. clearing her throat she let out a sigh, if only lyric could sing in front of others, maybe she’d be just as successful. at her sister’s confession lyric let out a soft giggle until she realized her sister was being serious. “oh…was i not supposed to know about that? im your sister, clara. i’ve always known you two were dating.”

“thank you! i think people are gonna like it. i hope.” she crossed her fingers with a small smile. she sat up and looked down her sister at lyric’s confession. “wait, you knew? and you didn’t say anything?” she laughed. “oh my gods, i should’ve known that. but yeah, we’re not anymore. i can’t stand coming home and seeing him, you know?” she ran a hand through her hair and laid back down. “is he okay? does he seem okay?”

lyric was always happy to spend time with clara, which made her being home the greatest. as shy as the girl was it was very rare for lyric to spend much time with anyone but her family. “im glad you’ll be around so long, we are going to have to hang out all the time, i’ve missed you so much.” she said rolling onto her stomach and looking at her sister. “love songs? well, what inspired you to write so many love songs? at least it’s good timing for valentines day.” she said. then gave a questionative look. “oh? yes, i’d like to now why you have left me here.” 

“well, not a lot, but a lot for me. maybe three?” and out of fifteen, that felt like a lot. that didn’t really matter. she looked around before turning to his sister. “okay, well...i wasn’t single this whole time. for like three years up until four months ago.” she bit her lip and took a deep breath. “i was with julien.”

“oh, yeah of course! come on, do you need hep with anything?” lyric asked but only to find clara going ahead of her toward her room. “are you going to be home long?” she asked as she walked up the steps behind her younger sister. she loved clara around, even if the girl got lyric into troube at times. as soon as she was in clara’s room she flopped onto the bed and took one of the pillows, holding it close to her chest.

“nah, i got it. i’m big and strong, you know.” she winked at her sister, leading the way to her room. it was nice to be home and as she opened the door to her room, she could smell the familiar smell of sea salt and various candles that she leaves here. it always smelled like home. “oh, i don’t know. i was hoping to stay until valentine’s, i think? i don’t need to be at the studio often now.” she set her bad down and flopped next to her sister. “so, the EP has a lot of love songs, right? i don’t think people will exoect that from me, since you know, i haven’t been in a relationship in a while.”

“that’s what i wanted to talk to you about, actually. why i haven’t been home in like...four months.”

lyric backed up and gave her sister a small smile. as much as she loved clara she had always been secretly jealous of her confidence. “that’s amazing, i’ll have to take a listen to it.” she said tilting her head and gave a look. “a lot to tell me? well, don’t keep me waiting, sister. tell me everything. what is it you need to tell me?”

“let’s go up to my room first so i can set this down.” she gestured to the bag. truthfully, she just didn’t want anyone to overhear her. “and then we can sit on my bed and have a total sisterly catch up. i want to hear everything that’s going on with you, too!” she was already to the stairs and headig up by the time she finished her sentence.

lyric had been sitting silently in the libary, as always reading when she had nothing better to do and when she heard the main doors open and the familiar sound of her sister she let a bright smile come to her face. “clara!” she called out rushing to welcome the girl with a big hug. “what are you doing here?”

she let out a laugh and wrapped her arms around her sister, giving her a slight squeeze before letting go. “my EP is done!” she grinned and bounced on her toes a little bit. “and i wanted to come home. plus i have like so much to tell you.”
