since I've seen people posting about missing women's hockey, i want to remind everyone of the good news that the SDHL season starts in only 1 month, on September 9th! and if you can't watch it live (as many of us with jobs/school/etc who live in the north america time zones can't), some of us do delayed liveblogs that start at specific times so that people can watch and liveblog together if they want.

the SDHL is a top league with a lot of players who have played and will play in the PWHL, so you can see some old PWHL faves, see some future PWHL faves (did you like watching Swiss goalie Andrea Brändli in the olympics? did you miss Akane Shiga when she was gone? did you not know initially why the Sirens picked Elisa Holopainen that high in the draft? are you wondering about the new hot masc Viivi Vainikka and the 2026 championship she won? they were all in the SDHL last season!), and find some women to fall in love with who might never even want to go to the p-dub!

don't despair! the women will play hockey sooner than you think!

my biggest wishes for the wpbl broadcasts:

pitcher name and pitch count on the scorebug

batter name on the scorebug

pitch speed and strike zone graphic

more consistent play-by-play commentary

fewer interviews during play

when you talk about how long of a time coming this has been it's also good to remember how quickly these things have moved too. on monday of this week these women received their uniforms and gear for pre-season training camp, they got five days to train together. that same day ayami sato made a post about how she finally met most of her queens teammates for the first time, but there were still a few that hadn't made it yet. six days ago a ~dozen of these women were still in their national team uniforms playing qualifying games for the women's baseball world cup, i know the canadian players all roadtripped together right after punching their ticket in the tournament from rockford to springfield. more were en route from all over the world, there are over half a dozen countries represented in the league. as long as it's taken for this all to come together, when the train came through you had to get on while it was still rolling, there's been comparatively very little time to acclimate and prepare, but these women are some of the best in the world (who have largely had to make that distinction for themselves), and tonight we're going to see multiple 20+ year veterans of the game (sato, meggie meidlinger) alongside rising stars who all share the distinction of being the first women signed to play professional baseball in america in 70 years. i dont think i have a good closing quip, i hate how much compromise it's taken to get here and the pressures they'll have to play under, i've loved baseball my whole life, i'm really excited to be here
