Oceanit launches DragX, a Revolutionary Nanocomposite Pipeline Treatment

March 1st | Houston, TX - Oceanit hosted more than 60 experts from the pipeline industry for the launch of DragX, our novel nanocomposite pipeline surface treatment technology. More than 60 subject matter experts from the energy industry, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Energy, and National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), joined Oceanit in Houston or via webcast to learn more about this breakthrough technology.

DragX is one of a number of advanced nanocomposite surface treatments that have been recently developed at Oceanit. When applied, DragX creates a water- & oil-repellant, low-friction surface; even on corroded and de-rated pipes.

Altino Coding wins the 2018 HVCA Social Impact Entrepreneurs of the Year Award

The Altino Coding team was awarded the HVCA Social Impact Entrepreneurs of the Year 2018 on March 1st for their work to spread computer coding to schools throughout Hawai'i. The team, which includes members from Oceanit & Kamehameha Schools, was honored at the 30th anniversary Hawaii Venture Capital Association (HVCA) Deal & Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. It was the 17th time the Awards Gala was held.

The Social Impact Entrepreneurs of the Year Award honors an entrepreneur or entrepreneurial group/company that makes a substantial contribution to Hawai’i.  HVCA states that the winner will have contributed to non-profit organizations or community & volunteer efforts and will be recognized for showing leadership, innovation and commitment as part of efforts to solve the state's toughest problems. This year, the HVCA received the largest number of nominations to date; a total of 27 Hawaiian companies were honored at the gala.

Oceanit uses AI Chip Innovation to Win Hawaii’s First Annual ‘AGathon’

On January 13th, the ‘Harvest Vision’ team took first place in Hawaii’s first ever agriculture-tech hackathon: AGathon.

Oceanit teamed up with Kauai Coffee Company and Kamehameha Schools to develop an innovation that can ‘see’ the ripeness of coffee cherries utilizing an artificial intelligence microchip. By determining ripeness, Harvest Vision could improve Kauai Coffee’s harvest values by more than a quarter million dollars per harvest.

“Kauai Coffee Company is the largest coffee producer in the United States, and coffee is Hawaii’s second most valuable agro crop, last year making about $62 million dollars,” says Fred Cowell, General Manager of Kauai Coffee. “The sad stat is that each year, (we) lose about 20% of profits due to harvesting inefficiency.”

Artificial reefs have been around in Hawai’i since the 1960s. Historically, these reefs have been constructed of an interesting variety of items, including cars, concrete pipes, tires, barges, sunken ships, and concrete rubble. 

However, because these artificial reefs are usually made from materials foreign to natural reefs, they often have stability issues; lack the much needed surface area for marine life to flourish; and don’t provide the number or sizes of cracks, holes, and caves present on a natural reef.

Hawaii Students Travel to Seoul to Compete in International Altino Competition

High schoolers, Dayevin Bunao and Kayla Diniega, joined an Oceanit-sponsored trip to South Korea in September for the 2017 Annual SAEON Autonomous Challenge. They started off as students studying coding through a series of classes that use “Altino” robotic cars as a platform to teach multiple coding languages such as Android, Arduino, and C++. From there, they became mentors, and their dedication to helping teachers learn code earned them a trip to South Korea, with additional help and support from those who donated to the Altino Coding Fundraiser.

Halawa Inmates are Learning Computer Programming

Oceanit is using the robotic teaching platform, Altino, to help inmates from the Halawa Correctional Facility learn how to code. Inmates now have resources to a multitude of languages such as Android, Arduino, and C++. By using a robotic car, they can learn through exercises that are interactive, motivating, and fun.

U.S. EPA Awards Oceanit to Develop Corrosion Resistant Treatment

Oceanit is pleased to announce that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded us $100,000 to develop a nontoxic coating for use in water pipeline repair. The innovation will advance from the business’ EverPel coating, a nanotechnology-based treatment that prevents and protects existing pipelines from corrosion. Treated pipes are capable to endure wide ranges of temperatures, pressures, and marine environments without deterioration or loss of quality.
