“It’s like kicking a puppy.” She laughed. As a child, there were a few times that Luna forgot to take care of her teeth, mainly just skipping a night or two brushing or flossing, and her father always looked so pitiful when he found out. “That’s true. Even people manage to bring up footage from back then, it’s not all that significant to start surging around again.” It was mainly the deeply obsessed fans that looked into that kind of thing, and they were usually too proud to say anything bad about them. “Okay, but he better be ready for me to order him around, and you should let him know how I am about fire hazard safety. If he blocks any exits, I will give him a lecture.” She wouldn’t be overly mean about it, but Thorn knew how she felt about fires. She looked at Thorn sympathetically. She must’ve really trusted Zach if she let him go through her mom’s things with her. Luna was sure it brought back a lot of memories for Thorn. “Maybe she did. Mom did meet a lot of people in her work. If she did have dreams about them, they’d be in this book.” She let her fingers trace the edges, but she didn’t open it yet. She felt oddly scared to read it.
“He should trademark the look,” she laughed. The only other person that Thorn knew who came even close to copying the look was Sam. “I keep telling my dad he needs to burn all the footage from our talent show days. That doesn’t need to see the light of day ever again,” she laughed. “We all look like Raven the Acid Bath Princess of Darkness.” Their aesthetic was still goth, but at least it was a classier goth now that they were older. She chuckled when Luna remarked that Zach should expect to be bossed around. “That’s a given but I’ll definitely warn him about the fire hazard stuff. He’s pretty good about that.” He had plenty of practice lately. Thorn could see the hesitation in Luna’s face as she traced the edges of the journal. “We don’t have to go through it now. We should probably wait for Dusk,” she replied in an attempt to give Luna an out so that she didn’t have to go through with it. “You know how she likes theories and speculation. Flipping through the journal would be a game of smash or pass that she wouldn’t wanna miss.”
yrahcaz-arataz:
“Why would that go without saying? Your group overall didn’t care for me before all of this happened, and I was the reason you went through so much. It wasn’t like you wanted to spend time with me in Salem. I put that on you by opening my mouth, and you had to stick to it to survive. I thought you tolerated me at most. I’m sorry that I didn’t see it as more than that.” She’d been important to him, but it was hard to see that it went both ways. He knew that she’d care if he died, but he only thought it would be in the way that she wouldn’t want anyone to die. “Showbiz tends to be the same thing as survival.” He shrugged. You put on a show in order to survive. He watched as she put on her own show for him. He’d seen her power before, but it was smaller then. It seemed to be growing out of control now. Luckily, they were at a beach. He kicked some sand at it, and the fire died down. “Are you okay?” he asked. She didn’t seem hurt physically, but she was clearly scared.
It stung a little to hear him say he thought she tolerated him at best. Sure, he was an idiot sometimes but even before they got transported to Salem, they’d been somewhat friends in her opinion. They’d even gone on a ghost hunt together. That was friendship, wasn’t it? “It is possible to be angry at someone and still care about them,” she pointed out. “I was upset with what happened, but that doesn’t mean I wanted you to be a human sacrifice. Do you still feel like I just tolerate you?” she asked. It wasn’t really the impression she was going for so if he still felt that way, she needed to adjust something. She didn’t argue that showbiz was a business of survival. They were both talented enough to make it in that world, but it didn’t mean they hadn’t had some of their own personal disasters. She hoped what she was about to show him wouldn’t be a total disaster. Unfortunately for her things didn’t go as planned. Zach was quick thinking though and managed to kick sand at the fire to put it out. Thorn sighed deeply and tried to relax in order to not restart it. “I’m okay. I just...I thought it would go away when I got home.” She thought this whole ability only appeared because of her trauma. So, it stood to reason at least in her head that it would go away when she was away from the trauma. “So far it’s the only thing I can do. I’m surprised I was even able to will it that time. It’s always random. Do you think it will go away?”
ofhellsbells:
“Thank you,” they smiled proudly. It wasn’t really something to be all that proud of, but Belphegor held a lot of value in sleep. “No, not really.” Belphegor shook their head. She didn’t normally thrive at night time over day time or anything like that. “It’s more like insomnia.” She just needed something to occupy her time while she stayed awake, but it wasn’t like they really needed it. “Well, I figured out I love her about a year ago, so since then, but we’ve known each other for centuries.”
They seemed proud of their ability to sleep through anything and everything which she could respect. It was a strange talent, but everyone had their own. She grimaced when they brought up that their girlfriend had insomnia. “I understand the struggle. Sometimes its hard to wind down at the end of the night. I can give you some herbal recipes that helped me if you want to make them for her?” she offered. Odds were though if she was a florist she might’ve already tried all the herbals, but Thorn felt compelled to offer something. “Aw, that’s sweet,” she smiled. She assumed the centuries part was an exaggeration. “I find that friends are often the best romantic partners.”

zztophat:
“I dunno what you guys did to him, but somehow he came back from that timeline even more chaotic,” she laughed. it probably had to do with having to deal with her cousin for a whole month. she was surprised to hear thorn voice that being married to zach wasn’t the worst thing to happen to her. she knew a little bit about the girl’s history including the ghost that plagued her hometown for a bit and the issues that occurred during her australia tour. she supposed thorn was referencing that in which case comparatively she supposed she was right. a small panic rose in her chest when thorn replied that the nature of her desire to speak with zach was personal. was she pregnant? they’d been married in the other timeline and zach slept around a lot in general. he was usually safe about it, but all it took was one mistake. she told zach no more dead zatara’s but that wasn’t an invitation to add to the population. “i’ll pass on the message that you’re looking for him. and um…” she paused for a beat. “look if there’s anything else you want me to tell him…i don’t…mind…i mean we can–i can–…figure it out.” they could find a way to tell him and figure out their options together.
“Zach dropped the chaos only for Sam to pick it up,” she groaned. “It must be contagious.” She hoped Sam wouldn’t take it any further than telling Cupid. That probably had consequences in and of itself. She hadn’t seen much of the hunter since they got back. He sort of just dove right into life like everything back there hadn’t affected him. Thorn wished she could let this all roll off of her in the same manner, but she was struggling. Still, she didn’t want to come off that way to Zatanna. She felt the need to impress her and she didn’t know why. She rose a brow as the magician stammered. We can figure it out. Figure what out? “Oh my god...” Thorn’s cheeks turned almost as red as her hair as she put two and two together. “No, no...” she placed a hand on her stomach reflexively. “It’s nothing like that. We’re not--I’m not pregnant,” she assured the magician. Her throat suddenly felt dry. “It’s magic related.”
ofpossemagnet:
“Yeah, sort of,” he nodded. “It belonged to a group called the Men of Letters. Our dad’s dad was a member which makes us legacies. The American chapter died out, but the British chapter’s still around. In my universe they were major dicks though so it’s safe to say we won’t be having tea with them anytime soon.” Their opinion on hunters was that they were primitive. And Dean’s opinion on the BMOL was that they were stuck up assholes. He raised an eyebrow when she asked about elemental magic. “Yeah, there’s a few books out this way,” he motioned for her to follow him. “If you wanna know about more than just how plants and herbs are used in teas and ointments though you’d have better luck talking to one of the Zataras. There’s also two Archangels, Belphegor and Raphael, that might be able to help. Belphegor’s a little cagey about this kinda stuff but they’d point you in the direction of someone who could help.” That someone would probably be Raphael.
“From what I can tell, in your universe, just about everyone was a dick,” she pointed out. She’d heard bits and pieces of Sam’s life when they were in the other timeline. It didn’t sound great. She knew he and his brother were from different timelines as well, but some things seemed to match up. “Have you done any research about the Men of Letters in this universe?” she asked, eager to possibly help him look into it. She liked that sort of thing and got really into it from time to time. She began following him through the labyrinth of shelves as he guided her toward the books on elemental magic. She hadn’t yet gone to Zach about her issues but she listened as Dean listed off the resources. “Belphegor? I ran into them once in a recording studio. I didn’t know they were a healer.”
ofsamwinchester:
“We won’t be,” he assured her. “I don’t know exactly how long it’ll take, but I’ve got people back home in pretty high places. One of them is bound to figure out how to get to us. Zatanna especially has the means to figure this out.” He wasn’t all too worried about her ability to get to them. His main concern was just that it might be too late and something really bad would happen before she got here. He was trying his best to be calm throughout this, knowing that if he let it overwhelm him, that other Sam might get his chance to take over, and a lot more people would get hurt. He took the seat that Eleanor offered, grimacing as he did so. He turned his attention to Thorn, hoping she’d regained herself enough to answer, and she did. “Yeah, we’re new.” Sam nodded. “We’re from up North. The people in your town aren’t exactly what we’re used to.”
🌹🌹🌹
“Well, we need to figure something out soon or there won’t be an us for her to bring back.” She kept her voice low as they talked. “The full moon is only a few days away.” Sam knew what that meant. Zach’s cousin, Ambrose, had been sent back with them and he was a werewolf. He didn’t have the tools he needed to control his shift in this timeline. They needed to find wolfsbane apparently in order to cast a parameter that Ambrose’s wolf wouldn’t be able to cross. “Keep an eye out. Maybe there’s some wolfsbane on the shelves in the shop,” she whispered before quieting down.
“Up north?” Elenaor questioned. “What brings you here?”
“Employment, actually,” Thorn piped in. “We’re looking for work.” She watched Eleanor carefully for a moment. It’s not that she was suspicious of the woman, it’s just that...well, the situation was freaky. It was like watching a mirror of herself mixing herbs that would ensure Sam’s wound wouldn’t fester.
Eleanor felt much the same way. She kept about her usual business, but she was observing Thorn through her peripherals. It was uncommon for a woman to hold an occupation aside from a wet nurse or nanny. Even Eleanor was an anomaly. “We are a small village, but maybe there’s a place for you here. What kind of skills do you have?” she asked.
mazikeenofmurders:
Maze hoped she would, but she wasn’t counting on it. She wasn’t the type to waste away waiting for phone calls. People tended to come to her. She stood back while Thorn ran to the man’s side. So this was Theo then. He didn’t look like much, but it was kind of funny that he’d gotten taken out by a few boxes. Humans were so fragile. She tried not to laugh considering how concerned the other human was. She cleared her throat, wiping away the smile on her face. “Yeah, sure. Should I tell them he’s fallen, and he can’t get up?” She loved that commercial. After a good snicker, she actually dialed the number and gave the operator the necessary information. “Think you can handle the rest?” She knew the guy, so it made more sense for her to stay here with him.
She glared up at Maze when she poked fun at the situation. Some people used gallows humor to cope, but it hardly seemed like the bounty hunter was having any sort of mental qualms about this. She seemed perfectly content actually. Maybe a little relieved that all they’d found was poor Theo on the ground. “Yeah,” Thorn replied a bit frostily. “You can tell the ambulance whatever you need to to get them out here.” She applied pressure to the wound to keep it from bleeding too much as Maze went about calling the ambulance. “You sure you don’t wanna stick around?” she teased before relenting. “Yeah, I got it from here if you have better places to be.”
yrahcaz-arataz:
“I know. I didn’t want to give you guys the chance to try to talk me out of it or force me to stop. You already lost Eleanor. I thought if I just handled it myself, you wouldn’t have to lose anyone actually important again.” He’d felt like he had to do that, and he had been foolish enough to truly believe that it would protect them from more pain. Realistically, it was a suicide attempt, a way for him to think he could be redeemed for his wrongs and get rid of himself in their world in the process. Neither had worked. “I’m sorry. I should’ve stayed and listened to you guys.” His apologies weren’t usually this sincere. He usually rolled his eyes and only said it to move past it and ignore his mistakes, but his mistakes stung more this time. Simple apologies wouldn’t make them go away. He nodded as she explained her situation. He felt like he’d been like that before, but right now, there was no one to put on an act for. Well, there was Thorn, but there wasn’t much point of putting on an act for someone who had a backstage pass. “Acting fine when you’re not. Sounds like showbiz.” It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t exactly abnormal. He wasn’t the person to tell her to stop doing it. “Go ahead.” He nodded.
Her features softened when he explained why he shut her and Sam out. “Zachary...” sighed. “I thought it went without saying, but you are one of the people that’s important to me.” He wasn’t doing her any favors by sacrificing himself and he saw that now, but it still felt like he needed a reminder that life wasn’t just something you threw away. They were both home now and safe but she could hardly say he was living life. She nodded and let it go when he apologized. It was sincere and she believed him. She didn’t think he was going to pull something that reckless again. “It sounds like survival.” She was afraid that if she sat with her emotions for too long, she’d burn the place to the ground. It was easier to pretend those emotions weren’t there and everything was fine. She bit her lip when he gave her the go ahead to show him her magic trick. She nervously turned to the fire pit. “For my next trick...” she flicked her hand over the fire pit and it burst into light. At first the flame was subdued but it very quickly began to burn brighter and hotter than Thorn had intended. “Shit...” she whispered and balled her fists up in the hope that that would put out whatever flame she was controlling, but no dice. “I can’t...” she whispered desperately as she opened and closed her fists.

Belphegor nodded. “I can sleep through just about anything if I want to.” They could’ve woken up to anything they wanted to too. They had a specific sort of awareness while they slept. They knew when people talked to them, but they didn’t bother to wake up for most people unless they wanted to. “Cool, that’s not much.” It wouldn’t be much for them to carry was what they meant. They were always happy for less work. “She’s my girlfriend,” they grinned, happy to talk about Cupid. “But she’s also my best friend. She’s really nice. I’m sure she’d help you even though it’s late. She’s always helping people, and she’d probably like the excuse to not have to go to sleep.”
“That’s definitely a talent,” she smiled. She really couldn’t boast the same. She was a light sleeper. She picked up the habit when she was young, mostly trying to keep an ear out for when her dad was finally home from one of his benders. She could really only sleep soundly in those days if she was sure his car wasn’t wrapped around a tree somewhere. Luckily, those days were behind her now. She began putting her guitar in its case as she listened to them talk about their girlfriend who owned the flower shop they were heading toward. “Ah, so she’s a night owl then,” Thorn grinned. “How long have you been dating?” They still had that fresh glow of the honeymoon phase of dating so Thorn ventured to guess it was a rather new relationship.

“We wouldn’t be able to go on tour ever again until we got our teeth in order,” Luna laughed. It wasn’t like her dad could make them stop touring. Luna was old enough where he couldn’t make those kinds of decisions for her anymore, but none of them really wanted to disappoint him with their dental care in the first place. “At least it made it harder for the fans to notice I fell too.” She was sure videos would’ve popped up everywhere about it if it weren’t for the fog making it hard to see. “It’s mainly just clothes and my equipment for me.” There were a few other things too, but Luna tended to be mostly prepared to go on a trip at any time with what they did. She didn’t really have a life to pack up when Dusk and Thorn, the Hex Girls, were her life. “You’re the one actually bringing a whole other life with you,” she teased, nudging Thorn with her elbow. Luna didn’t like the idea of one of them bringing a boyfriend with them, but Thorn had seemed happier and lighter since suggesting it. Luna could deny her sister happiness.
Luna felt over the cover of the book. For something that looked so burnt, it felt cold. “I guess so?” It still felt strange though. She handed the picture of their moms over to Thorn. “Maybe seeing you again reminded him of it. It’s my mom’s dream journal. Dad said that mom always had vivid dreams and that it helped give your mom ideas of things to draw… . I thought it burned in the fire though.” Clearly, it had, just not completely.
“I don’t think any of us can live with the thought of disappointing him,” she laughed. Regi was like a second father to her. He looked after her in the months when her dad was consumed by his addiction following her mother’s death. He even helped her dad get his life back in order and for that she was grateful. “Thankfully that was still one of early day concerts so there wasn’t much of a crowd to see it.” At the time, they were playing small hometown festivals mostly. Now they sold out arenas. She never expected they’d get this big but here they were. “If it makes you feel better, you can consider him part of the crew,” she chipped in. She knew Zach would carry his weight on this tour. It wasn’t a cheeky little vacation for him by any means, but he still had a ways to go to prove that to Dusk and Luna. Thorn glanced briefly at the journal when Luna mentioned that it was her mom’s dream journal. “Yeah...” she began quietly. “Zach and I came across some of those drawings when we were looking through my dad’s shed. It was mostly portraits. A lot of it looked like hospital patients and people around town.” The portrait that stood out to her the most was Dusk’s mom, who as far as Thorn knew, had never met either her mom or Luna’s. “Maybe your mom had dreams about these people?”
ofchastity:
“Well, that’s a bit morbid,” Chastity remarked. It wasn’t like she wasn’t used to dark humor. Belphegor and Dagon both used it frequently, but it could still catch her off guard. Parents were also confusing for angels. Technically, God was the father of all of them. He created them all, but each set of angels felt like different families entirely. It didn’t feel like any of them had parents. Did that put them in the dead parents club? Or something else entirely? “Great! I hope you get some good sleep. I’m sure you’ll need it for how busy you’ll be, both with the band and enjoying yourself.” Chastity herself didn’t plan on sleeping. She didn’t really need it, and she tended to get too excited about weddings to sleep anyways.
“Yeah,” she chuckled. “I guess it’s how we all cope. We all still have one living parent at least,” she chipped in, not wanting the wedding planner to feel bad for her. The nature of each of their parent’s passing was dark. Thorn’s mom died of a debilitating illness that took her life rather quickly. Luna’s mom died in a fire. And, well, Dusk’s mom shot and killed her father. It was easier to make jokes about their untimely demise than it was to face the music so to speak. “I’m sure it’ll be great,” she grinned. “You’ve done a wonderful job making this place look like a suitable wedding venue.” Even with the small electrical hiccups that were ongoing. “How long have you been doing this kind of work?”

Zach tried to think for a moment of what their story would be like. Whatever they did, they’d have to stick with it, so it was better to put more thought into it, especially if they had to back up their claims. “We could base it a little on the truth. Do you think your actual family would approve of me? I’ve gotten around a lot, so for one they probably doubt that I’ll stay faithful to you.” He was pretty sure his own family would’ve thought the same thing. “Plus, I’m an entertainer, which isn’t a very stable career, especially in this day and age, and it involves a lot of travel. We could say that we met when you came to one of my shows. They wouldn’t think I could support you, and maybe they had plans to marry you off to a wealthier family. Someone you didn’t like.”
Zach shook his head when she got down on herself. “It’s not your fault. You can’t blame yourself for their actions. Besides, it’s already happened now, so all we can do is just handle the fallout.” He wasn’t generally the type to reassure others, but her pacing was making him anxious. “You don’t have to throw anyone directly under the bus. We don’t have to name anyone specifically, just point out how it wouldn’t benefit you to bewitch him if you didn’t want his attention in the first place.”
She felt a pang of homesickness when he asked her if her family would have approved of him. She thought about her dad and how worried he must’ve been. He was always concerned that she’d get trafficked or something while on tour (she couldn’t blame him after the Outback incident). And then there were her sister’s, Dusk and Luna. Would she ever get to see them again? Or would she die here in this cell before she ever had a chance to make it home. She took a deep breath and focused back on what Zach was talking about. Would her family approve of him? No, probably not. “Yeah,” she nodded. “That could work.” They might take pity on her and she could play up the helplessly in love sort of girl they were going for. “Where do we want to say we’re from?” she asked. Not very many towns or settlements were established yet, but they needed somewhere plausible in case someone tried to cross reference them. The good news was that it would likely take months of correspondence with the neighboring towns to either corroborate their story or negate it. She nodded and stopped pacing when he reassured her that they would handle the fallout and get ahead of the story. “They’ll be down here soon to question us,” she replied as she nervously glanced at the entry way. “They might separate us...especially if they think I’ve bewitched you.”
yrahcaz-arataz:
🐇🎩✨
“Hey, I’d never do that.” Not to her anyways. She was essentially part of the audience, and he typically left them out of more complicated acts like that because you never knew how they’d handle it. Handling people wasn’t exactly Zach’s forte. People like Zatanna and Bunny were fair game because they knew what they were getting into. Even when he changed things up, they were more prepared than an audience member would’ve been. “I don’t think most detectives are all that great at figuring out most things magical.” At least when it came to real magic, and Zachary’s magic tended to alternate between real magic and just classic trickery. “The same way they keep just about any powered person in check. If it’s serious enough, the Justice League gets called in. Depending on who’s available, different people go to handle it. Sometimes, it’s my cousin, and sometimes it’s someone else.” He shrugged. “More than half the time, magic itself has its own consequences that keep people in check.” He hadn’t had to experience those consequences himself yet.
“And you can’t blame a magician for not revealing his secrets,” he teased in return. He’d watched her play with the light, guiding it for her to go in the directions she wanted it to until it was back over his hands again, seemingly back in his control even though it had been the whole time. “What’s the fun in hunting down happy ghosts? I figured you’d want them being a little pissed off. We could try channeling an old family friend of mine, but it’d take a bigger amount of alcoholism on both our parts.” Odds were that acting like that would’ve given them a much angrier ghost, or a hornier one depending on the day, neither of which would be pleasant. “It’s a lock,” Zach said plainly. “I don’t even need magic for that one. Can’t I have a better challenge?” Within less than a second, he had the door unlocked, and he opened it up for her. The light went into the room, but there didn’t appear to be anyone there.
🌹🌹🌹
She believed him when he said he would never intentionally drop her just for laughs. Zach had a reputation in the industry of being an asshole, but she liked to think that was just for show. “Well, if you ever need a famous assistant to help you draw in a crowd, you have my number,” she offered. She wouldn’t mind being part of the show. “You haven’t met Mystery Inc. then,” she teased. “They’re pretty good at debunking both the paranormal and the everyday weird.” Most of their mysteries ended up being being a man in a mask, but every so often they dealt with the paranormal like they had at Oakhaven with Thorn and the other Hex Girls. Of course at the time it was Thorn who was able to finally trap the witch. “Having a family member on the League has to be kind of intimidating.” Especially with Zach’s tendency to play with magic like a toy. “Ah, yeah the whole with great power comes great responsibility thing,” she laughed. “My mom had a similar mantra but it was more focused on balance and the natural order of things.”
“Happy ghost seems like an oxymoron,” she laughed. Surely if they were happy, they would’ve crossed over. “If you run into one be sure to interview it. I’d want to know what’s keeping it here,” she teased. Really though she would’ve loved to interview a ghost, but most of the ones she ran into either couldn’t keep form for long or wanted to kill her. “What a shame. I forgot my flask on the tour bus,” she joked. She had no intention of pissing off their paranormal guest, but depending on how this expedition went she might need some liquid courage. She watched as he unlocked the door with relative ease. “Well, if you ever get tired of the magic thing you’ve definitely got potential to start a new illegal side business,” she joked. She tried to flip on the switch for the lights but nothing came on. “What if it’s a mouse or something?” she asked, second guessing this whole thing. “Maybe it chewed through some wires and knocked down some boxes.” It would explain the lights flickering and the noises they were hearing.
