Doesn’t take him long to find a few critters trying to keep out of sight. A snake, for one, and a few fat squirrels that he could skin and smoke in case food gets scarce. Every once in awhile he looks up to make sure Beth was still in sight. She was. Blonde head bobbing through the trees. She was it. She was the last of them. He’d make sure she didn’t get herself killed. He couldn’t save all of them but dammit, he could make as start now. 

Daryl whistles to get her attention then holds up the snake in his hands and motions back to camp. Walking closer to her he gives a gruff “c’mon, I’ll show ya how ‘ta make a good cooking fire.”

With the traps set up correctly, the last one being set up just before he whistles. She turns to face him, a quick nod being given to him. She can’t help but feel like a constant annoyance when she’s around the male, it must be a vibe he gives off. Or maybe he’s always annoyed. Part of her wants to tell him i’m not a child anymore, i’m eighteen not eight. But that wouldn’t end well. They need each other, even though he would never admit it.  ❝ traps are all done. ❞ She tells him quietly, looking up at him with tired eyes before she looks away.

Daryl’s better when he’s numb. It’s comfortable for him. He doesn’t want to think about Hershel or Rick or the kid. They’re gone now. If he was there maybe it might have been different, maybe something would have changed just by him being there. But he wasn’t. He WASN’T and now everyone they know is dead. 

Beth won’t last long. He knows it. He remembers her from the farm, how fragile she had been and now she was being dropped on cement- she’d soon shatter like porcelain. After that? It’d just be him. No more Merle. No more Rick. No more…..anyone. So yeah- it’s better to focus on what’s at hand. Without a word of confirmation Daryl puts down the pack in the middle of the little clearing and looks back at Beth to jerk his head towards the trees. It was an indication that she set up the traps while he gets them something to eat. 

And still, without speaking, he grabs his crossbow and heads deeper into the woods.

a small, sad sigh is emitted when the male walks off without a word. it makes the pain in her stomach increase further just at the thought of how alone she really is. she sucks in a deep, gasping breath as she tries her very hardest to hold it all together. she knew the others had to be alive, somehow. they were strong and clever. or maybe she was the only greene left. a small, pale hand comes up to clamp over her hand so she doesn’t make any noise. her head shakes with determination before she’s walking off into the forest, wiping her eyes furiously before her hand grips her knife.
