JJ was a party guy. He’d step foot on the grounds even if it was a kook party to drink to drown his own sorrows. One he wanted to forget. Forgot who his dad was, forget about the injuries he was sporting every week. He wanted numbness and tonight was one of those times. JJ didn’t want the pity or the sympathetic expressions it was a silently hidden agreement with John B, he knew of the abuse, he knew what Luke did when he was drunk when he was angry he took it out on me. And I hated so badly that the kook of all people that hold me up and witness it. But somehow I did pity her tonight. She was alone, no friends and her brother ditched.
The blonde did do process of limitation here as he glanced at the rocks where Topper and his boys were hanging out. It made me sick how smug they all are. Now I was judging who her brother hung out with now. But I doubted Maia expected any less form me now. “ Disagree do you? Because your not the favorite? I mean it’s probably because your too nosey..” He had a earful of insults in his mind in the brief encounters he’s had with maia. She was too curious, nosey, she was kinda a know it all and worse of all she apparently cared about me. And that was a no go in my head. As I sipped on my drink now; I had swallowed the liquid with ease. “ That’s the smartest thing you’ve said all day. “ Now this was JJ being a smartass, teasing her because it was our thing. I didn’t take myself seriously. I never did. And when it came to seeing how Maia was able to hold her own may I use the word fun. “ Now I think you know I’m going to say it I can take care of myself especially with that asshole but I guess it’s cute you care.” I said it in a bewitted tone now as he continued to sip on the drink. And he glanced around at the party goers now, the dancing, the flames reaching the dark skies before us.
“ I’m full of surprises, but most of all I pitied you all by yourself, a new student here, I couldn’t let you look lame considering we’re partners..” Her reputation was mine, and I had cred that I needed to hold onto.

My eyes shifted into a roll and my head gave a slight shake as I listened to JJ teasing me once more. Honestly, I wasn't offended in the least over his quips now. For one, I was used to it by now since JJ has been insulting me from the moment he met me. Secondly though, it had oddly become our thing. Apparently insulting each other was how they did things in this town... Or at the very least, how JJ allegedly did things. "No, my brother is great so it's fine that my parents think the world of him." I briefly said. Not that I owed him an explanation. Especially when said explanation would, no doubt, result in JJ maknig fun of me once more. I thought to myself but before I could stop my mouth from taking over, I continued speaking. "I just wish they didn't hold him on such a high pedestal while nothing I do is ever accepted by them." I admitted. Stupidly since I was now biding my time for an insult to follow from JJ. "Go ahead. I left myself wide open so toss out your insults. I can take it." Could I? Well, I had tough skin but that was up in the air at the moment regardless of that. "Oh, trust me, I know you can take care of yourself, but regardless, I've grown used to our exchange of insults, so I want to make sure you'll still be around to take care of your part in that." I quipped lightly in response as I took a sip of my drink. Flashing him a skeptical sort of grin though when he mentioned his pity toward me over the fact that I was standing here alone. "Oh wow, aren't you just a regular knight in shining armor." I sarcastically uttered out. "Must be my lucky night... or unlucky I suppose. It all depends on what might come out of your mouth next before I make my decision on that front." I quipped humorously in reply as I took another light sip of my drink.
Jj didn’t get along with people easily. He felt comfortable with his friends the pogues and Maia she was a wild card for him. Although he found great amusement in teasing her. She liked to wear armor to where this whole kook vs pogue didn’t bother her. But it was becoming our thing to dish our insults. Now JJ never used the words our thing with anyone nor would be he caught dead uttering those words aloud now. He liked to see Maia all relied up and as he heard her indication that her brother was great, he had an insult in his mind that shifted when she dared to speak again.
“ Appears like your parents are dicks. Awful people which makes sense considering they’re kooks. Who only accept the bare minimum here. Only want to aim high for one kid while you collect dust.” He added of course JJ didn’t relate. Nor did he mean any personal harm towards Maia she was nice, kind but he didn’t trust her if given the chance to toss him over the edge. But he did pity her; she tried to impress her parents to be achievable for their standards and honestly it felt like a waste of time. “ Stop trying to please them, they don’t see you.” I added as I brought my red cup up to my lips with ease taking a gracious sip. No I had my reasons for doubtful parents; but I also didn’t surprisingly want to overstep here. As I chuckled now she did give me a great opening now.
“ Don’t you worry sweetheart my dad hasn’t killed me yet, although it may happen soon so you’ll have to find a new insult partner..” He aired out lightly as if he was expecting the outcome if Maia hadn’t showed up, he’d probably be on the ground choked out to death. “ You care too much, and people don’t give a shit you know.. It’s a waste of time.” He aired out. JJ lived by his own code; and caring doing more in school not one of them for him.
“ Lucky because no one else would pity you the way I do kook. After all you hold up this lame reputation for both of us.” He aired out as he glanced around the beach music blaring, students parting the drinks on full display.

"Well, when you put it that way... so eloquently might I add... it would seem you are right. My parents are dicks." I nodded with a humored expression crossing my lips. My brother I absolutely adored. He and I had been close since we were kids, and even now as we are older, we may not hang out with one another as often as we used to because he has his own group of friends, but he was still protective of me and looked out for me when he felt he needed to. "You know, I think that might be the first nice thing you have ever said about me. You feeling okay tonight, JJ?" I gently quipped. All the while I flashed him a soft, teasing smile. Ordinarily all he did was toss insults in my direction, so hearing him defending me over the way my parents treated me was a nice, yet slightly unsettling change of pace for us. "All joking aside, I appreciate it." I eventually said as I flashed him another smile. I did cringe slightly at JJ's comment about his father. I saw how closely JJ came to being severely harmed by that piece of garbage he calls a father, so even though it seemed JJ was using the remark as the punchline for some sort of off-colored joke, I definitely didn't find it funny. "Not that it is any of my business, but do you have anywhere else that you can stay to get away from that man?" I had a feeling JJ would react to my words of concern toward him unfavorably. Probably tell me to go to hell, mind my business, or some other choice of words to put me in my place. Still, my question came from a place as someone who did care about him and only wanted him to be safe. "Sure, I know where you stand on kooks, but you can crash at my house any time. My parents are never home anyway, so it's not like you would have to see them." I offered but even as I did, I knew JJ would respond unfavorably to that too. "For what it's worth, this party may suck, but your company isn't the worst." I shared as I glanced over at him. The truth was, he may despise me but from my perspective at least, he was starting to grow on me. At least enough that I didn't toss my drink in his face and walk away from him yet. Time would tell on all of that though.
Jj had his own set of walls up. He was used to the gossip, used to the whispers who his dad was the juckie, the guy that worked jobs not to make ends meet for his family but because he wanted the next drug fix. Each time JJ thought for a second that his dad was going to whip himself into shape he let him down. Today was another average day for them. I left early to avoid him, I spent most nights at John’s or I’d even on a nice night take a blanket and pillow and hide out on the HMS. don’t get it twisted I wasn’t scared of Luke, I knew how to jab at him, I knew how to get under his skin but when he was in that foal mood there was no stopping the what came next.
I was ashamed for the first time because someone had witnessed the outburst and I hated hated admitting it especially since it was a kook that saved my ass but I’d be bones I’d be dead if it wasn’t for Maia and for some insane reason maybe I was trying to avoid karma tonight by being nicer to her. Did I trust her? No but I trusted her intentions enough to where I genuinely felt like she wasn’t going to blab to the island about today. Hearing about her parents I couldn’t explain the feeling I had; but I felt sympathy for her, it was obvious her parents were only equipped to handle one kid instead of giving attention properly to both. All that said; I surprised myself when I coughed a laugh her parents were dicks. “ Don’t say I don’t have my moments here.”
Meaning I had my more softer attitude at times I was capable of being nice to her. I chose to be spiteful and give her crap simply because I don’t do the whole letting my guard down thing with anyone. Here we go, her caring bit, she thought because I needed her assistance today that I’d openly go to her now please. I had credited people to turn to. A low huff left his lips. “ Sweetheart I don’t need saving here, I appreciate you not calling the cops on him and helping me today but I have friend to go to I don’t need to rely on a kook.” As if that devilish grin of his silently spoke it now. He didn’t want Maia on his side; he wanted to get through this project and never be seen with a kook again or at least that’s what JJ was telling himself.
She was sweet naive as they come, but this island was divided for a reason, and I was the outside while she lived in some mansion or penthouse. I was okay giving her chance tonight I was enjoying a good cider before beer, as if I had to put on that facade again he turned to her as he backed up eyeing the brunette. “ I am the life of the party Kook, you’re lucky I’m finding myself over here with you..”
