look. here’s the thing. star wars is not for the critics. it’s not oscar bait. it never has and it never will be. star wars is not about being the best subtle and artful pretentious cinematic statement. star wars is about cool scenes in space, characters you love, worldbuilding, mixed results of experiments with film technology, adorable comic relief characters, saving the galaxy, debating fan theories at parties, and intergenerational nostalgia. it’s going to have cheesy elements. it has its own set of genre rules that it’s bound to and can only be unpredictable within those limits. the ONLY thing about it that is truly transcendent art on its own is, obviously, the music. sorry rotten tomatoes I can’t hear you over the sound of john williams’ latest variations on the imperial march, call me back later
we call it space opera unironically because literally the only thing that would make star wars more like opera back in the day is if you could talk in the theater and demand to replay your favorite scenes
