Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), poem 85 from “The Gardener”, 1914 Translated by the author from the original Bengali. New York: The Macmillan Company.
"... ah. thats part of your worry."
"do you uh, want to talk about it?"
“I... I don’t want to trap them in our issues.”
"Maybe." They admit softly, looking at the flower again. "But tell me... Does that invalidate those who do find happiness?
“Of course not, but I don’t know if I should seek more than I have.”
"Only you can decide that. But whatever your decision? Your kiddos will grow up in the shadow of it. Thats how it works."
Nightmare flinches, turning away.
"Maybe." They admit softly, looking at the flower again. "But tell me... Does that invalidate those who do find happiness?
“Of course not, but I don’t know if I should seek more than I have.”
"... what?" Bells gives Night a look of surprise, followed by utter disbelief, and finally a frown. "that whole... 'feeling kind of defeatist' aside? the day you just accept there's only a certain way to play the hand that's dealt you, Fate gets to screw you over a second time."
"... and he, she, it, and whatever pronouns or persona or deity you tie to it? it'll do just that if you give it a chance."
"Night? there's enough that'll kick you in the face in this omniverse without laying down for it, and saying, 'i guess this is how it works.'"
“I just mean... how often do a Dream and a Nightmare, or any variation of us, ever manage to live peacefully together in harmony? Because Halluciv’s been looking, and he hasn’t found many.”
"...depends on whether you're looking at the beginning, the middle, or the end." is their answer, with a faint half smile. "Al and Erebus went through the worst against each other, but the other day Al was holding his nephew, looking happy as I imagine he's been in millenia."
"Hood was there at Greylu's wedding, snuggling his smols and boyfriend. Spirit is healing and resting with the now redubbed Hope, and being forced apart too long."
"Juice and his brother have made their peace, and run the castle together. Sparrow and Starling are actually going to have the chance to grow up together, in a home with people who love them. That's... at least half of those I know at all well."
“But there are so many more who fight each other every day, so many Nightmares who want their Dreams dead and so many of the reverse.”
"... what?" Bells gives Night a look of surprise, followed by utter disbelief, and finally a frown.
A puzzled glance, unsure what the other means. "Would they accept... you, might have to refresh my memory. A lot has happened."
Nightmare’s face is shadowed. “We haven’t seen any of them in a while... we just ran off to the Unknown at the drop of a hat, but we had good reason, we had to do our duty!”
"...just, accept the question?"
"Nightmare... you and your sister need to start visiting each other more. Youre too close to be living like you're multiverses away."
“I wonder, is that just the natural order trying to reassert itself?”
"-you can only ask." they're watching it, drawn maybe by the light in the darkness, who knows.
“...I wonder if Dream rememberers what was down here.”
"...same answer, honestly." They're a bit curious, but they don't press it. If their sons want to tell them, they will.
“Would they accept it?”
"..." another smile touches Bells' expression, this much hesitant. "that, sounds nice. I've never seen a flower like that before though."
“Wirt showed it to us. It’s one of the things we needed to help him with. It only grows in complete darkness though” Nightmare explains. The flower itself looks like a glowing cross between a rose and a lotus bloom.
"...it's really pretty. I've never heard of a flower that requires pure darkness to grow."
“It’s from a long time ago. I don’t know if anyone else has been able to cultivate it.” Nightmare smiles at it. “I wonder if Dream remembers it.”
"..." a hesitant, "but, you're okay? you and the kids and X and-"
"i figured something had come up, and... when you didn't get in touch, started to worry. I know, stuff can come up unexpectedly."
The guardians nod, Halluciv finally standing up to reveal a glowing blue-white flower.
This, finally, draws the lich's attention back to the fact that they'd walked in on something.
Hesitation, before, "can, I ask what that is?"
“A moonblossom,” replies Halluciv. “It was about time we gave this area purpose again.”
... ... an, aesthetic choice? sure. that's believable, they'll stick with that. either way, the lich follows the stairs, and heads down.
At the bottom, they find Nightmare and Halluciv, digging at the ground that once held the remains of their mother. Nightmare looks up and smiles.
“Bells, we weren’t expecting you.”
The look of confusion is very real, yep. A slow smile in return, dwelling less on whatever they're doing, and more on the fact that everything seems tenatively okay? Ish?
"Hey. Um. Yeah, I guess I just kinda dropped in. Glad things look-" a pause, taking in the not quite grave robbing, "-mostly okay? I uh, was starting to get worried, not hearing from you."
Nightmare looks down, chastised. “I’m sorry. The Unknown was having some problems, and we had to go help Wirt.” He meets his parent’s eyes apologetically. “We didn’t even have time to come to your wedding or send a message. We’re really sorry.”
A light knock against the tower door. They've put off this visit longer than they should have.
The tower opens.
...that's a good start. Probably.
the lich heads inside.
The stairs lead downwards this time.
"Tomorrow!" Is the excited agreement. "That- that was close... in the tree room, at my tower!" "..." "Um. In the shattered void, by the river of memory remnants? but don't worry about that part, just don't go outside. The 'not-sound' is kinda headachy."
Halluciv nods. “I’ll let Night, X, and Huāng know.”
"...thank you..." good... good. "We'll see you then."
He laughs. “Definitely.”
Once more, the lich attempts to call their sons phone...
Halluciv picks up. He’s at the beach with Cephalopod.
"There you are!" Utter relief in their nonny's voice. "Thank goodness... if you didn't get the invite in time, after all these years-!"
“The invite... is it finally happening!?”
Nightmare looks back at the phantoms. “And... what if he doesn’t understand? He’s still a child.”
@officialmarvul
”Any child that understands when his parents need him and runs to get help from someone he and his parents trust, would understand that you are scared for him and want him to be okay.”
“...”
“How do you know for certain?”
A small skeleton wearing a green and purple sheni is shocked awake. Running out of the tower and through the courtyard, he bursts through the castle door. “Dad needs help!” he cries. “Where’s Dream? Or Marvul, they have to help him!” ((Tag officialhalluciv))
{ A guard noticed the boy’s distress, and points him to Dream’s room. }
{ After that though the guard has to get back to their duties, but the little one finds himself in front of a big door now }
( @officialhalluciv )
He throws open the door, with no thought to propriety. “Aunt Dream! My dad needs help, please!”
{ Dream wakes up, quickly out of bed and running to him. } “Wha- what’s wrong with my brother??”
“I-I was having a nightmare and he must have noticed because he entered it but now it’s become his nightmare and there’s a lady on fire and he called her mother and what do I do!?!?”
Black tears are running down his face.
{ Dream frowns, kneeling down to him and wiping the black tears away. } “Shh… it’s okay.. it’s okay, is he hurt? Has it escaped into the real world.?”
“I-I don’t think so? B-but she’s gonna hurt him, I know it!”
{ Dream nods, teleporting both of them to the tower’s front door. } “Lead the way.”
The child runs up the staircase, holding Dream’s hand so she wouldn’t be affected by the tower. He opens the door and runs to his collapsed father. The crack on Nightmare’s head is starting to leak.
“He’s trapped in my nightmare, I don’t know how to get him out!”
{ Dream kneels down next to her brother with a frown… } ”… okay, I’ll go into his nightmare.. alert Halluciv- he knows more about nightmares than me but I am my brother’s sister.. I know my mom.”
{ She whispers, closing her eyes and entering the nightmare }
Huaisang nods and runs off to find Halluciv.
In the nightmare, the guardian kneels before a woman covered in violet flames, begging her to stop, to forgive him.
{ … She growls, anger fueling her as she summons her bow and fires an arrow right at the flaming woman. } “Leave my brother alone.”
Nightmare looks up, tears in his eyes, as the arrow hits. The woman looks at Dream, barely choking out “Starlight…” before she screams, engulfed in the flames of both her children, leaving only a destroyed tree where she stood. Nightmare picks up a piece of it, cradling it in his hands.
{ She sighs, putting a hand on his shoulder. } “… it’s okay now… she won’t hurt us anymore…” { Dream whispers, herself having tears in her sockets as well… }
He stares at the burned piece of their mother in his hands. “What would a mother not do for her child?” he sings, his voice tight.
“… she wasn’t our mother. She never acted like one.. just because she created us doesn’t mean we have to accept her as a mother.” { Dream says. } “She was a monster to put us through this all..”
“But she still gave us life…” he whispers. “And I failed her.”
“And we don’t owe her anything for doing that!” { She says. } “Don’t you remember how much we suffered..? How you were hurt and I was silenced.?!”
“It’s a promise for life between mother and child, and to break it there’s no greater pain…” the song forces itself out of Nightmare’s mouth. “And you’re shaken to your soul with an ache you can’t erase, like the tears you never cry but still keep scrubbing off your face-”
{ She stares at him. } “Why are you saying or..- singing all of this..?! Why do you care still about her?! Why are you acting like she never hurt us?!”
“There’s a pain you can’t imagine, a little talk that keeps you wide awake, that somehow turns to bold determination- that you won’t ever make the same mistake.” He looks off into the distance, where a phantom image of Huaisang and Xcellence are sparring, Huaisang fighting with his fans and X with his blade. Nightmare reaches towards them. “And so you vow to feed your little future, ensuring that his talent, poise, and charm, might just grow up and save you after all!” His arm falls. “Might just grow up and save you, after all.”
“….. he did save you.”
{ Dream says silently. } “… he went to me before she could hurt you and is waiting for his father to return…. let’s go home.”
“What would a mother not do for her child, what lengths would a mother not go? There’s a bond that exists between mother and child, ah but then again…” he looks at his sister. “How would we know?”
{ … Dream stares at him, the tears now falling from her cheeks. } “She wasn’t fair… she made us guardians without a choice… She keeps haunting us- me ever since I broke away and I.. don’t know since when she’s haunted you but…. b-but it’s just not fair, brother…”
“Everything I ever did… everything I’ve ever done… it’s always been for someone else. Mother, you, X, Huaisang… Dream I’ve always been working to do what was best for others. And I always fail.”
“…. I know that feeling- kind of..”
{ She sighs, sitting next to him. } ”… Before I did everything for everyone too.. give the villagers all they wanted but when I tried doing everything for myself, and- well, you… it didn’t really help… it was just lonely and hurted just as much… so eventually there was a balance.. take time for yourself, and when you have time for others, try to help them..”
“Dream… what if I fail my son?”
”… I ask myself that too- Heh, I have triplets and you just have one. But I think every parent questions this… but if you fail you do everything to help again… but Ima sure you won’t fail… just let them do whatever they like as long as it doesn’t harm or endanger them.. it should be fine like that..”
“But what if… deep down… I’m just like her?” He looks out at the phantoms of his partner and son. “I try to be as flexible as possible with him, I don’t give him many rules, only ones that will keep him safe… but I know he’s going to look for something more. He wants to be like the wind, going wherever his mood takes him, and I can’t keep him here but I want to, Dream I want him to stay here, he’s growing so fast and I don’t know what he’ll become and I’m terrified that one day he’ll learn the whole story and he won’t want anything to do with me.” Nightmare looks at his sister beseechingly. “How is that any different from Mother trapping us in our duties?”
”You are not like her for wanting your child to be safe and with you. She just wanted her tree protected. She left that up to two children… her own children.. you’d never do that, you just need to talk to him about this, tell him how you’re afraid.. share your feelings brother.. you know what happened when you avoided telling me your feelings those decades ago…”
“But this is my son...” he whispers. “And I’ve failed at everything else I’ve ever done. I’ve failed everyone I’ve ever cared for. Why would he be any different?”
Nightmare looks down at his beautiful little child. He can’t believe how blessed he is to have him, to be able to have a family again. To be here, in his home. To have his brother and sister.
Huaisang is such a wonderful child, and is beginning to show an aptitude for dream magic and manipulation. He doesn’t have to rely on the negative energy of the world for sustenance either, which is something Nightmare had honestly feared.
However, he does sleep, and sleeping means he can dream.
The child begins to squirm, his face scrunching up. Nightmare knows these signs, and quickly heads into the Dreamscape to try and help. It doesn’t take long for him to find his son’s door, and as soon as he does, he all but flings it open to see something chilling.
A knight stands before Huaisang, holding a sword, his intention clear. Without thinking, Nightmare tackles him, and they roll down the street, and up the hill. By the time they’ve stopped, Nightmare is alone. He looks up at the tree, and sees a face emerging from it.
The face is followed by a body, and a beautiful woman stands before him.
“M-“ he hesitates. This is a dream, but why would Huaisang dream of Nightmare’s mother? He’d told his son the bare minimum in an attempt to avoid hard questions about her, so why would he dream of her?
“Nightmare,” she says, her voice like the wind disturbing the leaves. “My son, it has been too long.”
Nightmare takes a stuttering step backwards.
She reaches towards him. “Moonlight, what is wrong? Why do you flee?”
“No...” Nightmare whispers. “You can’t be here wh-what are you doing here?”
“What would a mother not do for her child?” She smiles warmly. “What lengths would a mother not go?”
“B-but you’re gone, you can’t be here-“
“There's a bond that exists between mother and child,” she explains, “ah, but then again...” her eyes turn cruel. “How would you know?”
Tears fill Nightmare’s eyes as he watches his mother erupt into purple flames.
