Finding & Evolving Your Personal Style
NYFW SS19 HIGHLIGHT REEL
New York Fashion Week was full of vibrant colors, fun combinations, and brilliant sihlouettes that make me feel excited to get dressed in the morning. Hereās a break down of a few of my personal favorite collections, & be sure to stay tuned for more Fashion Month posts!!

Fast Fashion: Fashion's Most Dangerous Trend
What is āfast fashionā and why is it such a big deal?
In the past few decades our attitude towards the clothes we wear has changed in a way that is harming our environment and society. The term āfast fashionā refers to clothing of a lower quality and cost made in factories with poorly regulated conditions and low wages. Fast fashion separates itself from the conventional fashion industry with its 52 annual fashion weeks as opposed to the 4 that normal high fashion brands follow. By releasing new content consistently,Ā brands like Zara and H&M outcompete designer brands with inexpensive renditions of on trend designs. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, ā15.1 million tons of textile waste was generated in 2013, of which 12.8 million tons were discardedā, as now fashion is seen as a disposable good rather than an investment. Also, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world second to the oil industry. This statistic shows that a need for quantity is overriding desires for quality in the current fashion market.
The impact of the fast fashion industry also poses many negative ethical implications. By employing cheap labor in developing nations such as Bangladesh, India, and Taiwan fast fashion brands prioritize profit over promoting a safe working environment as ālower manufacturing and labor costs mean lower costs overall, which result in lower prices, which, in turn, equal higher volume.ā. Consumers see cheap, cute clothes, but the reality of the way our clothes are made is hard to look past once brought to our attention. The most deadly garment factory disaster ever occurred less than 10 years ago at Rana Plaza in Bangladesh. Over 1000 employees died as a result of their management ignoring the buildingās deteriorating infrastructure which ultimately lead to its collapse. Primark, who employed this factory, took minimal accountability for their negligence. Ignoring problematic companies is being complicit in the chain of abuse towards the employees of factories that produce fast fashion.
As consumers we must be mindful in our purchases, keeping in mind the environmental and ethical impacts of our actions. By being conscientious hopefully we can all work towards making the fashion industry more sustainable without compromising the fun of fashion as an outlet for self expression.
Changing the Mindset of Instant Gratification
One the appeals to fast fashion is the instant gratification it gives consumers. Making shopping for clothes a more mindful event can help individuals better society by reducing their consumption of fast fashion. Thrifting is a foolproof way to buy clothes without adding to the waste of discarded textiles in the environment. In my opinion, it provides even more satisfaction because it allows you to purchase rare and unique pieces. Establishing individuality through style also contributes to the allure of fast fashion, so thrifting is a great alternative to promote self expression while also being sustainable.
Another more conceptual way to reduce your carbon footprint is to simply define your personal style. Knowing your personal style will reduce the likelihood of splurging on trendier pieces that donāt coordinate with items in your current wardrobe that you wonāt end up wearing. Also, calculating cost per wear of an item (cost of an item/the amount of times you will wear said item) is helpful in justifying investing in quality pieces rather than buying a lot of low quality pieces. Investing in basics like jeans, jackets, and shoes are good examples of areas of your wardrobe that could benefit from investing in high quality pieces. Trendy, cheap items go out of style quickly or become damaged due to their poor quality, so they are only worth wearing a few times. By using discretion when purchasing clothing, you can reduce your environmental impact by calculating cost per wear of a garment and thinking about how it would match other garments in your wardrobe.
The resources below include transparent shopping brands, additional information about the fast fashion industry, and videos with tips for finding your personal style and how to thrift productively. Being a mindful and informed consumer is key in keeping the fast fashion industry accountable for its destructive impact on society and the environment

Desk decor that's (somewhat) practical/useful
For my college dormitory, my home away from home for the next nine months,Ā I wanted to replicate the atmosphere of my space at home while tailoring it to my current taste. With this comes my first tip for decorating: bring as much decor/supplies from your home as possible! You do not have to buy a new version of everything you already own! This helps make your dorm seem more homey as it physically resembles your previous space. Keep organized with varying trays and dishes. For example, my table top mirror is multifunctional as it has storage in addition to its conventional purpose (e.g. helping me to do my makeup so that I never leave my room with unblended makeup). I Ā brought up a copper dish from Urban Outfitters to act as a catch all dish of sorts as it holds a myriad of beauty items like hand creme, perfume, rosewater spray, and a hair comb of all things. I also included lots of photos of my family and friends (mostly my dog tbh) so that I won't forget my true home (: Photos and wall hangs like tapestries or macrame hangs like the one I have help to fill empty space with varying textures/patterns.
For my desk area I tried to maximize the space I had as much as possible, so I utilized a fair amount of hanging storage. This mirror from (you guessed it) Urban Outfitters helps me organize my accessories so that they won't tangle. It's brassed gold finish also coincides with the array of mettalic hues in my room. However, I would only recommend this particular mirror to those who are allowed to nail things into their walls. I had to use a small nail to affix this to my wall (pls don't tell admin). Truthfully, I'll probably just patch it with some toothpaste at the end of the year.
This last portion of my desk is a conglomeration of items I bought from Target and succulents. Target has really inexpensive desk lamps that are super cute! I also brought this stapler and tape holder set from home, but it is also from Target. These two succulents add a bit of life into the typically draining college environment. I also brought three plants with me to overcompensate for the fact that my dormitory (and most dorms for that matter) do not allow candles which are typically a staple in my desk decor. I couldn't bear to buy fake votives so I reacted by acquiring candle-sized succulents and they make my desk feel just as full as if I had an aesthetically pleasing Diptique candle instead. Also, succulents are a good choice for college students because they are low maintenance. Try to put them in a space that gets full sun if you can!
Hope that this gave you some inspiration for the oncoming school year &Ā wishing you all the best of luck in your studies!

She's Elegance, She's Grace
It's truly a craft to develop a style that is both effortless yet composed, but illustrator and videographer Grace Mazh has managed to accomplish that feat across art forms through her YouTube and drawings. There is nothing normal and everything extraordinary about Grace's eclectic style which manifests itself into videos inspired by Greek Goddesses and drawings that look like they accompany a stories about distant, magical worlds. Grace has otherwordly and ethereal qualities that match her (for lack of a better word) cool style that French girls dream they had.Ā I had the pleasure of delving into Grace's creative process which embodies the notion that art can arise from any source organically. Individuals as dynamic as Grace perpetuate the concept that art should never be stagnant. With her constantly evolving yet consistently chic style, Grace's content is always engaging to view. Keep reading to learn more about Grace's art and style!
Can you please briefly describe all the different art mediums you work with:
I make videos, and I draw with pens (mostly).
Ā Your illustrations are absolutely beguiling! Where do you find inspiration for their ethereal yet psychedelic content?
Aw thank you! I think I'm just really in love with nature, magical creatures and stories. I would say mythology is my main inspiration, especially nymphs.
Do you think social media is to the benefit of society or do you think it imposes an archetype for how we should all be?
It's so funny that you're asking me this, because I've been thinking about social media a lot, lately. Don't get me wrong, social media is an amazing tool, it gives us the opportunity to share our work, connect with people, make contacts, and so on. But as a creative person, it can also be really oppressive. Especially if you're someone who doesn't have much self esteem [...]Ā The reason being, you're constantly seeing talented people growing, getting better, already knowing who they are, what their art style is, and so on. You start doubting yourself because you're not growing, not finding your own path. There's so much talent, so much inspiration, and you get lost in it, you can't come up with something original, something that feels yours and that makes you happy. I've been thinking about taking a break from social media, but we'll see [...]Ā I think we all need to find a balance with it.
How would you compare and contrast your approach in creating YouTube videos versus drawings?
I would say what they have in common is the aesthetic. I love nature, and pinkish tones, and I think you can tell with both my videos and drawings. While with my drawings the approach is to always get inspired by something, and then create, with my videosĀ it varies every time. The times I enjoy filming the most are spontaneous times.Ā When I'm filming the world I completely forget myself and the things that bother me. I feel like a kid, I feel curious. My eyes are never resting, always in search of little details and beauty to capture. I no longer care about people judging me, I don't even notice them. It's just me and my camera, walking down the streets. It is an escape, just like sleeping or reading or watching a movie. It is wonderful. And do you have a favorite type of art to create?
I think it's everchanging. Right now I like to use black paint, which I NEVER enjoyed until now. I like the fact that it's so unpredictable and freeing. I don't have to be so perfect and careful with it like I am with pens.
How did you find your vision amidst a vast internet full of aspiring content creators?
As I said previously in the social media answer, I don't think I've found my vision yet, but I'll keep working on it!
Often it appears as if your YouTube videos tell stories. How do you go about planning and creating them? Do you have a routine or is your creative process spontaneous?
I would say it's spontaneous. I'm not one to write down a script or plan out all the different shots, which is probably not the best way to go about it.Ā I've been quite inconsistent lately!
What do you think influences your style? Do you look up to certain individuals or do you gather inspiration from the world around you?
It's definitely both, I follow lots of talented artists and it's hard not to love and get inspired by them. I want to break free from that a bit, and just take inspiration from the world, especially if i'm traveling.Ā It's hard to be inspired in your home town, so most of the time I just take inspiration from pictures on the web. [...]Ā Not always though. Yesterday I was really inspired by the illustration of a pepper on a chilli powder packaging! Sometimes inspiration can be found in the weirdest of places hahah.
What are your wardrobe staples?
Ā high waisted skinny jeans, classic Vans sneakers, and a faux fur coat!
If your style were a place in the world where would it be?
Ahhh I really don't know. I think people in London are so funky and cool, I'd like to fit in there :P
We've been coveting the calendar and prints you designed! Do you have any other plans of expanding your brand?
Maybe! if it becomes more successful in the future I'd like to design some tote bags :)

These loafers are the definition of the wordĀ āstapleā. I paired these Gucci Jordaan LoafersĀ with updated cropped trousers from Acne and an asymmetrical top from Jacquemus. A Nixon watch and a Tiffanyās gold bracelet complete the look. Honestly, these shoes work with every neutral item for a classy everyday look or mixed with prints and colors to elevate them in trendier outfits.Ā
I paired these modern, chromatic Dior So Real Sunglasses with feminine and fun pieces that complement the geometric style of the shades. Simple silver rings from & Other Stories match the silver, wiry hardware of the sun glasses without detracting from their beauty. This eyelet
This look embodies summer style. Every element of this outfit makes me smile from the rainbow shoes to the glorious Lack of Colour Frey Hat. The hatās neutral hue lends itself to colorful pairings such as this Reformation T Shirt and Charlotte Stone shoes. White pants coincide with the casual yet refined outfit as the addition of silver hoops along the waistline add a slight edge to the overwhelmingly relaxed look. Maison Martin Margielaās Beach Walk reinforces the summertime/beachside destination of anyone who dons this look.
Look featuring the Realisation Par Goldie Dress! Silver and metallic hues evoke the celestial sentiments of the print. These earrings from & Other Stories look kind of like constellations which I thought was subtle enough to not look kitschy but still a bit clever. The mary jane style shoes from rodarte complement the feminine silhouette of the dress. In contrast, this EPIC Louis Vuitton Petite Malle in Epi Leather adds edge to the frilly dress and shoes while still matching the metallic theme. I included a Glossier Haloscope in Quartz as a bonus because if youāre wearing a star printed dress your highlight should beam into outer space.
Two pieces in one featuring the ChloĆ© Faye Bag and Le Labo Santal 33 Perfume! The floral print top and light wash denim complement the notes of cedarwood, cardamon, and sandalwood in the fragrance, unifying the earthy tones. The detailing of the shoes adds continuity with the bow on the top. The earrings elevate the refined and feminine look with their corkscrew shape; the light gold hue coincides with the hardware on the purse.Ā
I took inspiration from my favorite pieces that Iāve had my eye on for seasons and seasons but donāt have the funds to buy (I take donations!). Every item in this post I consider a wardrobe staple that I could potentially style for any season or occasion. Versatility is a key component in picking investment pieces, so considering the longevity of a piece helps to make the purchase more worthwhile. If you can, reflect for a season or two and deduce if the piece is still relevant and if you still like it. By doing this you will minimize your chance of post purchase regret over spending heaps of money on a piece of clothing that now is considered out of style. Later I will post ways to style each piece as dressing these statements minimally or expressively can alter the look from a basic outfit of the day to a more playful mood. By playing with color and texture you can elevate these items into outfits that you can couple with trendier pieces so that the investment piece easily transitions into any season (weatherwise or fashionwise).Ā

Ā A message from the other side,
Nine months ago I embarked on the crazy process that is college applications. As elementary the word crazy is there is none better that encapsulates the sentiments of the experience. I always knew I was bigger the the town I grew up in, but finally I am acting on these feelings. Iāve experienced love and rejection, my emotions surged and waned like an alternately ferocious and merciful tide. Iāve learned to not let anyone define my intelligence and that even when it feels like the world has stopped turning that I am still alive. Ā Reap the benefits of the seeds youāve sown and take off; stay grounded and remember where you came from. As much as youād like to get away from these are parts of your identity as much as your bones, skin, and smile. Be selfish for these next nine months but donāt forget your empathy. Focus on you and open your mind and heart to all that is to come and you will thrive.
