Lucy Stanton

Abolitionist and women’s rights activist Lucy Stanton was born on October 16, 1831 in Cleveland, Ohio. Stanton was the first black woman to complete a four year college program. While studying at Oberlin, she was president of the Oberlin Ladies’ Literary Society and gave an antislavery graduation speech titled, “A Plea for the Oppressed”, which was published in the Oberlin Evangelist. During the 1880s and 90s, she was an officer in the Women’s Relief Corps and a Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Lucy Stanton died in 1910 at the age of 78.

Hundreds of boats sitting abandoned in the port of San Francisco, 1850. Beginning in 1848, thousands of people from all around the globe joined the Californian Gold Rush in a chance to ‘strike it big’. The boats would come in, but then no one wanted to leave San Francisco and miss getting rich. So they accumulated in the harbor. Daughters of the Regiment Uniform, 1861

Worn by Lizzie C. Jones when Daughters of the Massachusetts 6th Regiment during the American Civil War. Canteen was made by Samuel Kirk & Sons, Baltimore, Maryland.

Daughters of the Regiment were women who followed the army to provide support for the troops. She wore a uniform and braved battles to provide care for wounded soldiers on the battlefield. More: http://www.gilderlehrman.org
