the brunette laughed; the idea itself was ridiculous. marlene knew that mary wouldn’t hide from her, just as mary knew she wouldn’t hide from her. though there were plenty of people marlene would hide behind the statue of a gargoyle in favour of bumping into them; mary just wasn’t on that list. “mhm,” she teased lightly, “of course you haven’t, regardless though i’ve missed you, macdonald,” marlene hummed, reaching out to jab her finger lightly in her friend’s ribs.
“ frankly, i’m a little offended that you would accuse me of such a thing, “ the brunette responded, teasingly. her lips tug into a small smirk then as she playfully gives the other girl’s shoulder a nudge. of all the people in the castle, marlene was one of the last that she would choose to avoid. when marlene was around, mary found that the burden she felt she had to carry could be lighter. she didn’t have to feel the weight of everything hanging around her. and, for a little while, she could just forget all the troubles that raced through her mind. all the things that she desperately tried to hide that she was truly dealing with. she smiled at the other girl then, “ i’ve missed you, too. ..so.. anything new and exciting to report? “
“mac, years of procrastination and ease has finally come to bite me in the arse –” he groaned, “you don’t know that –” he knew that he was being DRAMATIC, but even the thought of the prerequisites needed to be a hit wizard –he was starting to get a taste of the anxiety behind exam stress and he was NOT liking it.
“yeah? you sure? you’re signing up for this MESS?”
“ well.. can’t really say that i argue with that, “ she responded with a shrug of her shoulders. in her experience, procrastination did have the tendency to bite you in the arse.. eventually. he had just had the fortune to ride it out longer than mary ever had. but, then again, mary had always been afraid to let her procrastination get too out of control.. perhaps for fear of ending up being a wreck like her fellow gryffindor currently was. she gave a nod of her head in response to his words as her lips curved into a small smile, “ eh, why not? you can’t be that much of a lost cause. plus.. i am due for my good deed of the month. “
marlene hesitated, looking from mary’s pleading gaze to the look on the younger boy’s face and it told her everything she needed to know; this was not a conversation she wanted to get involved in, but it seemed like she needed to. sliding into the seat she pressed a quick kiss to her friend’s kiss in greeting, ignoring the boy as she turned to mary, blocking him out of the conversation, “here i am, though i could say the same to you, if i didn’t know any better i would say you’ve been hiding from me.”
mary was immediately grateful that her friend picked up on the desperate plea as she reached out to her. she knew that she could count on marlene mckinnon to play along when it came to getting her out of an unpleasant situation. a bright smile appeared on her face with the realization that she was saved from the torture of listening to the sixth year any longer. she easily scooted over a bit to allow marlene more room at the table, thankful that she had the sense to purposefully block the boy from their current conversation. “ hiding? “ she questioned, voice filled with shock at the mere accusation, “ moi? from you? never. “
she really was trying to stay interested in the conversation that was going on around her. but, truth be told, she had lost interest in whatever the younger sixth year had been prattling on within the first five minutes. she had tried to be nice by semi-listening when he started talking. but now, she was desperate for a distraction.. from someone.. anyone really. which is why she quickly perked up when she spotted someone passing close by. “ oh! there you are! “ she exclaimed ( a little over-enthusiastically ) as she scooted over to allow them room to join her at the table. “ please, come and sit down ! “
“i thought that was a week from now –” eyes widening in horror, “mac, tell me you’re messing with me, i’ve got arithmancy two days from now –”
“ it may be a week away.. but shouldn’t you still be preparing for it? think it is a pretty big exam, “ she responded, with a raise of her eyebrow. her eyebrows furrowed then at the expression of pure horror that appeared on the other’s face. “ jesus, gids, “ she breathed out, “ you need to take a few deep breaths, yeah? didn’t think that it was really your spiel to freak out over exams. “ reaching out a hand, the brunette gave him a few gentle pats on the shoulder as a ways to try to calm him from the obvious freak-out that he was having. “ relax, kid, you’re going to be fine. i definitely don’t have the grades that lils has, but i do alright. i can help you study, “ she said.
The Great Hall was loud as it always was, for a moment he thought about going outside but there was too much excitement in here for that. His legs were stretched out in front of him as he leaned his head back on the table. “You could just ask me to move my legs.” Not that he’d move them for some people but it was better than someone walking into his legs.
“ you could listen the bloody the first time that i asked, “ she responded smoothly. then, without hesitation, the gryffindor reached out to gently but firmly shove his legs out of the way. she moved around sirius then to get one of the few seats that seemed to be available at the table that morning. honestly, the brunette wasn’t really surprised that she’d missed out on some of the prime spots at the table. she wasn’t exactly what many people would call a morning person. stifling a yawn as almost an emphasis to that fact, she reached out to begin to fill her plate with some of the spread on the breakfast table that morning. she let out a bit of a grumble as a group of first year girls near her broke out into a fit of giggles. “ it’s too damn early for all of that, “ she muttered with a rub of her temple.
“can ya’ skip to the part where i’m supposed to give a shit because transfiguration is really kicking me in the ass and i’m CLEARLY not great at multitasking–”
“ hmm.. i’d say that you should give a shit when it comes to the exam that we have in defense against the dark arts, “ she began. then, she gave a shrug of her shoulders, “ but hell, what do i know? maybe, you don’t want to graduate with everyone else, prewett. “
⋅ ◆ ⋆ — ❛ DANIELLE CAMPBELL / SHE/HER ❜ ╱ when you think of paint-splattered clothing, the warmth of the sun on your skin, and soft pink lips, is it MARY MACDONALD you think of ? because i sure do, i also know, for a fact that this year is mary’s seventh year & they have a lot on their plate, like: prefect duties, frog choir, slug club, and care of magical creatures. boy, aren’t they a busy little GRYFFINDOR. i sure would like to know how their life pans out, wouldn’t you? ╱ MARIE , 26 , EST , SHE/HER & NONE !
i am finally getting around to writing my introduction out. soz it took me so long. i have an upper respiratory infection that is kicking my ass. but anyways, i’m finally here to introduce you to my smoll bean, mary mac.
the first thing that you should probably know about mary is that she is muggleborn. honestly, she had no idea about the whole “magic” thing until mcgonagall showed up on her doorstep and told her parents about hogwarts. there was, of course, some like speculation with the fact that the girl would randomly make flowers grow or cause a glass to break when she’d throw a tantrum. but, honestly, the macdonalds would toss that off to silly muggle superstition. once they found out mary was magical, it was honestly the best day of their lives. mary couldn’t have been happier to have something so “special” about her especially since she thought that she was nothing more than a simple farmgirl from scotland.
of course, like any other muggle, she had her idealizations of what hogwarts would be like. she imagined that the school would be nice.. that everyone there would be friendly. unfortunately, the girl was wrong in believing that everyone she’d meet at hogwarts would be friendly. she found that there were those that would wish she wasn’t there. those that wanted to make her feel that she didn’t belong. but, honestly, mary never gave those that wanted to make her feel that way much mind. in fact, she typically was the sort that would let small-minded insults roll off her back. something that would only infuriate those that wanted her to feel inferior all the more.
the young macdonald girl has always been someone that you can see with a bright smile on her face and a generally positive outlook. she tries to hold her head up high.. even when things around her may be falling apart. she is honestly not one that really wants to focus on herself. instead, she likes to dive in to what other people may be feeling or going through rather than focus on her own feelings. which is a definite destructive trait, but you really can’t tell her that. she will insist that she is fine with that ever present smile on her face even if she isn’t as long as she can make sure her friends are alright.
she’s always been an artistic sort. so, the one way that she does allow herself to channel her feelings is through art. you will often find her with a sketchbook in hand or paint all over her from something she’s worked on. it is one of the ways that she can allow herself to truly let loose of what she is feeling. she is actually quite talented though it isn’t something that she has ever thought fully of pursuing as a career.
truthfully, the girl has no idea what she wants to do with her life. she knows that she wants to be helpful in some way.. especially with the war-effort going on. but, she just doesn’t feel like she can be brave enough to be much of a fighter in it. especially after the attack that happened with a certain slytherin in her fifth year that has her looking over her shoulder more and more. but, she doesn’t want to sit around twiddling her thumbs while everyone else is out there doing what needs to be done either. she’ll figure it out.. eventually. she still has some time, right?
not a stick in the mud, but not a total party girl either. mary knows how to have fun but she also knows when limits need to be drawn. she’s definitely not the one that would be the first in line to be there to “mother” if need be. she doesn’t quite have the nature in her to be the most responsible person in the room. but, she also isn’t the one that will be the first to dive off the astronomy tower.. though she could easily be a close second. she likes to find some sort of balance between being responsible and irresponsible which is something that she feels that she has managed to find in her past seven years.
annnd that is all i have for her atm. this is sort.. and suckish.. but please come love my cute little scottish queen. i will come up with some connection ideas eventually but i am really open to w/e.. honestly the more drama.. the better.. so come toss some drama at me ok.
