The Ocean Calls Me

Moana’s unbridled enthusiasm was definitely keeping his positive as well. “ The ghosts of animals tend to stick to the ground, ” he explained as he too stood up, keeping an eye on the ground, looking around the two of them for any more clues. “ Zero only tends to be around my shoulders or hands when he is especially excited. ” It was with her explanation that Jack looked at her. “ You and your Maui friend are very intuitive, ” he commended with a little nod and a smile. “ Following the cold spots is always how I found the citizens whenever we’d play hide-and-go-shriek. ” Always one for town bonding experiences, he was. “ You lived on an island ?? What was that like ?? ” Despite beginning to move around the large aisle of books, he was still listening for an answer, hoping to prompt her to explore the little area as well.

Moana nodded in agreement, as if she had any knowledge about ghosts. But it seemed to make sense that the ghost of animals would stay on the ground. “Like living animals, right? They jump around when they get excited. What do you think other ghosts do? Do they walk like people or are they floating or even flying?” She let Jack lead her, following him down the aisle of books. Though she wasn’t sure what exactly she was looking for, her head wouldn’t stop moving from side to side. “You play hide and seek with ghosts? That must have been a fun but hard game!” Moana laughed, smiling brightly. “Uh-huh. I’ve only ever been off my island once. Well, technically seen twice because we left our island to find a new one and of course now I am here too. It’s very different from the life here. We don’t have stores, we gather and catch our food and everything we own has once been part of the island or the nature around it.” Her hand reached for her necklace, holding onto it. The necklace had been handed down from generation to generation and though it was not like anything the people wore here, she always had it on her. “I always wanted off the island, wanted to sail the seas. But I had never expected to end here.”

“Gather around a fire? We’re not at camp love.” Rose says with a laugh. She turns her face to look at the younger girl in utter disbelief. When the hell is this girl from?! “It’s a story, it’s an interesting story. Is there a reason that we have to know the people?”

“Yes! Around a fire. We always talk while we roast our food. But I’m afraid I don’t exactly know what a camp is.” Moana didn’t understand why the other girl was laughing. Sure, she had not seen anyone preparing their food over an open fire like they did back home, but so far she had suspected that this was only a common technique in a city this large. “How can I watch this for the story and the people if I don’t know these people. And I can hardly sit here all day long and look into there to see what happens to these people.”

Moana soft smile had encouraged Newt to smile faintly. “No it wasn’t.” He replied simply. He was entirely intrigued by this island girl. He wasn’t too fond of girls as girls come, simply because he didn’t get along with them. He found their plights trivial half the time, but this was based off of the few girls he knew. Teresa, Brenda and the girls of Glade B. It was fair to say all accounts prior to coming to New York, weren’t very pleasant. “Well it is a bit odd that money was randomly in your home. I wish there was money randomly in mine, then I wouldn’t have to be here.” He laughed as he carefully took her coffee and added more cream, sugar and an extra pump of caramel. “Here you are, is that better?” He asked with a smile. She was definitely worthy of becoming his friend. At least a new friend would help, maybe help the both of them.

“Huh. Well, I don’t know why there is money. Don’t you like working in this coffee house - shop, I mean. Sorry. I think it’s a nice place, you get to meet a lot of people and I am sure you can hear a lot of their tales! I’d love that. But I’d be no good with these machines.” She smiled kindly, shrugging. Moana took the cup thankfully from him, tasting it again - more careful this time. Nodding, she looked at Newt. “It is a little better, but I rather enjoy coconut water. But thank you very much. Is there this coffee with coconut in it? I’m sure it’d be delicious!”

After all, not everyone has a phone, it was okay “Yes, call. Why? You don’t have what a phone it is?”

Moana drew her eyebrows together, shaking her head. “I just moved here, you could say. In my home we don’t use phones, we are only a few people and we don’t need something like that. So I don’t have it. Did you lose yours?”

Newt gave a small nod at her question. “Yeah.” He replied meekly, honestly hoping she wouldn’t have asked but at least she didn’t think he was crazy. “Dismal. Desolate. Dusty. Dilapidated. Oh and dangerous.” He said as he used his fingers to count what he thought were all perfect descriptions of the era he had come from. “I don’t know why they are start with the letter D but that was the future I came from.” He sighed sadly, but couldn’t help but be intrigued by her unwavering happiness. “Like an island?” He asked as he watched her excitement and wished he could harness that kind of emotions. “I wish I found money laying around. We didn’t have places like this were I’m from either. All of this was dilapidated and in disarray.” He said with a weak smile, laughing lightly as she sniffed the drink but his whiskey coloured eyes widened as she took a full on sip. “Yes very, are you all right?! I could put cream and sugar in there if you want but really, are you all right?!”

Moana crinkled her nose in disgust as Newt described his home. “This sounds far from a nice place, even if every place has its bad sides.” She tried to offer him a small smile, hoping it would show him that she could understand him. “An island, exactly. It’s far from here, I think. At least people don’t know about it.” She sighed, shrugging slightly. Moana liked traveling and exloring, she felt like this was what she was born to do. But without the ocean she felt a little out of place. “Does this not work this way? I am not sure where I get the money from but I will not complain because I wouldn’t know where to get any.” The girl nodded quickly in response to both of his questions. “Yes I am all right. Just hotter and more bitter than I expected. Cream and sugar will make it seeter, correct? I’d very much love that.”

“ Ok wow um…..what’s a Te Fiti?” She asked, among the millions of other questions she didn’t know about that was one of the first. “ Actually, why don’t you start from the beginning.”

“Te Fiti is a goddess that can create life. She was the first entity to be on this planet, back when there was nothing bt ocean everywhere. Then she spread the gift of life, created whole islands, the animals, the plants. Us humans. But when Maui, a demi god who wanted nothing but the love of people after his parents threw him away, stole the heart of Te Fiti she turned into Te Kā. She started to plunge the world into darkness to punish us for what Maui did. Sadly, the heart was lost but when I was a baby the ocean carried it to me. My father didn’t want me to be near the ocean because he ad lost a dear friend to it so my grandmother kept the heart for me. But then the darkness came to our island, ruined our coconuts and fish, my grandmother gave the heart to me. So I sailed across the ocean to find Maui, we got his hook, and restored Te Fiti.” Moana smiled. To her it was the most common story, she had heard about Te Fiti since she was a baby, but people here seemed to think different sometimes.

The performances him and the citizens of Halloweentown were always a town-wide event, from beginning to end. He really thought she would enjoy it, but they had other matters to attend to first. Unwinding his arm from hers, he watched her bend low, feel the air near the ground, shiver. “ If it gets cold, we’re on the right track, ” he agreed with a little nod. Okay, he hadn’t entirely planned on actually seeing, much less communicating with a ghost today, but he had Moana by his side, and two was better than one. He bent low with her, following her hand motions. “ I might have been wrong. It’s possible it might be the ghost of an animal. ” He sort of hoped it was Zero. “ Might I ask what this is for ?? ” He nodded toward their hands, only doing it to follow..

Moana smiled as Jack confirmed her suspicion. She was excited to meet a ghost, maybe they would get a great story out of that one? She would love to hear what it was like to live as a ghost in this library, how long it had lived here and oh so many more questions. Moana turned her head to look at him, an eyebrow raised. “The ghost of an animal? Oh, that sounds great! How can you tell the difference though?” She looked at her hand before standing up again, shrugging slightly. “Maui taught me that if the tide gets warm you are on the right way to your island. This way you know where to go. I thought the same may work here, just with a cold breeze instead of warm water because those are ghosts we are looking for, not islands.”

“You don’t like castles? Who doesn’t like castles?!” Sans questioned, genuinely shocked. “Calm down, pal. I call everyone kid. Don’t sweat it.” He smirked, shaking his head for a second. “Whattaya mean the ocean brought you here?” Sans asked, unsure entirely of what she meant. “Like, you hopped on one of those crappy little boats you’re trying to make and this is where you ended up?” He teased, smirking to show that it was all in good fun. “Look, I really don’t wanna be the one to burst your bubble but…” Sans paused looking down, his eyes going dark and his voice getting much lower and even raspier. “There is no way out.” Looking back up, the color coming back to his face, and his eyes lightening again, he forced a smile. “But if you really wanna make these boats, you can still count me in.”

“What would I need a castle for? Where I am from, we build our homes from what we can find on the island, that’s all I need.” Moana sighed, running her hand through her dark curls. “The ocean is my friend. It wrapped around me and carried me through the ocean, then spit me out not far from here. But it won’t take me back home, no matter how often I try to talk to it. And yeah, comment on how crazy I am because I talk to the ocean. So no, I don’t have any boat otherwise I’d have no problem right now.” Her brown eyes reflecting her worry and confusion, she looked up at the male. “What do you mean, no way out? There always is.” She looked at her sad excuse of a boat. “I guess help would be nice. Even if I won’t be able to get out.”

“It’s more than that.” She says, looking up. “It’s a story, you don’t watch it for the violence. You watch it for the people.” She says, continuing to stare forward at the telly. Refusing to turn her face to the brown haired girl. She doesn’t really want to… well… see people that weren’t fake.

“But I don’t know these people!” She exclaimed, pointing at the screen. “Why wouldn’t you gather around a fire and tell each other stories? That’s what my people would do. And it’s a lot of fun too.”

She muttered to herself and looked around for a second, trying to find someone that she could talk and ask something, Callie just got near to the first person that she saw on the streets “Excuse me? Would you happen to have a phone? I really need to call my family"

Moana tilted her head, thinking for a moment about what a phone was again. Once she remembered, she shook her head. “I am sorry, I’m afraid I don’t have one of these phones. I have no use for one of them, there is nobody for me to ... call, it is?”

“Who’s gonna help a vamp out?” The male asked the other, hovering as if he were lying on his back, arms grossed. “You got any red on you, kid? I need a fix.”

Moana looked at him with her eyes opened wide before she shook her head. “I am sorry, I do not wear anything red nor do I carry something that is red with me.”

Newt didn’t want to talk about where he was from. Where he was from was a nightmare in comparison to what everyone had gone though, enough for him to stop talking about it. He let out a sigh and shrugged. “Kind of. I’m from a place far from here in a time far from now.” He murmured as he went to fetch her drink, bringing it back to her to see that she had already set the proper amount out on the table. With a smile he gave a curt nod. “Yeah, actually. That’s the correct amount.” He smiled friendly, happy to have possibly made a new friend, maybe.

"You are from a different time?" Moana's eyes grew wide, her mouth falling open. "Wow, that's so cool! What's the future like? I'm from an island far from here, I hadn't even met people I hadn't known my whole life before I came here. And there are a lot of things here that we don't have. Like this place." She gestured around her at the coffee shop. It was exciting to her, which is why she had so many words tumble from her lips. With a thankful smile she took the cup. "I found that money in the place I live. That's how it works herd?" Moana sniffed at the hot liquid, both excited yet skeptical. After a second of hesitation she took a sip, eyes growing wide. "Hot, hot, hot. Also bitter..."

“Te Fiti?” he asked, narrowing his eyes as he thought about the name. “Sounds like it’s near Hawaii or somewhere around there. If so we’re a long ways away from there”

“Yes, I think that’s where it is. At least it seems that this is what I get told. We lived on Motunui before we set out to find a new island. It must be very far from here, we never had weather like this.” Moana smiled. She did miss her island. The last time she ventured off, she at least had a plan and a goal. But now it was all so different. “Where are you from?”

“Maui? He a friend of yours?” he asked as he sat up a bit and laughed at her description of the city. “You sailed the ocean? You’re pretty badass, kid, seriously”

“Yeah, you could call him a friend.” Moana looked at the male, nodding her head slightly. “I did sail the ocean, I needed to return the heart to Te Fiti, my people needed it. Once I learned how to actually sail and everything it wasn’t that bad.”

I mean, work isn’t usually the kinda thing I like to do, but it’s better than nothin’ right…wait,” he paused looking over the girl for a moment, a puzzled look on his face. “What’re you building a boat for? You can’t leave. Least, from my understanding - this place doesn’t let anyone leave.” Sans spoke, his voice lowered for just a moment. Raising it once more, he smirked at the girl, “But sure, I can help with a boat.”

“I don’t like castles, no. And I am not a kid.” Moana was about to thank Sans for his help when he continued speaking, her eyes growing wde. “No, no. Yo must mistake something. The ocean brought me here, there must also be a way back. Why wouldn’t we be able to leave?” Moana sighed, sitting down on the makeshift boat. “I will find a way out of it. I need to get back home to my people. So if you really want to help, I will continue building this boat. And ten others, if this breaks from whatever that keeps us here.”
