Em laughed, nodding her head in understanding.  “My cats the same way.  Her favorite way of showing affection is biting people’s ankles, so there’s that.  Still, looking at a cute cat will suffice.”  She led the other girl toward the exit, glancing back at her as she spoke.  “Honestly, it’s no big deal.  You can buy me a coffee or a burrito and I’ll love you forever.” She watched Phoebe as they stepped outside, her face curious.  “Same for me, to be honest.  Or a strange night.  Dreams can really mess with my head, apparently.”

“Oh! You have a cat!” Phoebe visibly perked up at the new information, standing on her toes as excitement suddenly danced in her gaze. “Can I meet her sometime? Maybe her and Pawdrey will get along! Pawdrey just doesn’t really go around anyone... if he does, there are a lot of scratches that come out of it.” She crinkled her nose, shaking her head back and forth at her own pet. “Love me forever? What if I get you both? I like this offer. This is a great one. I am totally in support of you loving me forever,” she decided confidently, her eyes shining with amusement. “I never thought too much about dreams, really, but this one just felt so... real. It’s just made me wonder about a few things, I guess.”

The young lady had Charlie speechless for a moment, brows drawing together as he slowly shook his head. “Not a clue, actually,” he heaved in a sigh, although his bag seemed to gain a pound or two as he thought of the faded faux-leather material that lay empty at the bottom, save for his ID. When she offered him a twenty, he chuckled nervously, immediately handing the bill back to her. “Nah, it’s fine, the quarters are more ‘n enough… aren’t you a peach, though,” Fingers rose to scratch at the back of his neck, needing the moment to rack his brain for a good excuse. “Actually, if you could uh, point me in the direction of the nearest bus stop, I’d be real grateful to ya’,”

“Oh, no.” Phoebe frowned, shaking her head back and forth. “You know, I recently got mugged. He took my whole purse! Not having my wallet with me was super scary. I have so many gift cards in there, I can’t lose them, you know? ... and my ID. That’s super important, too,” she shyly tacked on, shaking her head in disbelief with herself. “Are you... really, it doesn’t hurt me all that much! I mean, really, you don’t have to think about it in any bad way. It’s like when people give you Christmas presents, you know? Just think of it like a Valentine’s Day present, or something. We both win,” she suggested, before quickly freezing up. “... you want directions?” She opened and closed her mouth a couple of times. “I mean, I know the way, but I... am not good at explaining. I can walk with you? I’m not super busy,” Phoebe told him, before pushing on. “I’m Phoebe, by the way. I always forget to introduce myself.”

“Do you hear me arguing? I don’t think you do. Give me all the random cliches,” he said with a grin, nodding his head excitedly and clearly enthusiastic about the idea. “Anything less than the most cheesy and cliche of things? Nah. That’s why I love you,” he decided, reaching over to ruffle her hair a bit affectionately before going back to dancing. “You and me both. High school was fun, wasn’t it? Oh those silly boys and girls. But where to we start? Wait… can we toss out anything to do with animals automatically? Because there’s no way in hell I’m sweeping in on a white horse I’m telling you that right here and now. A love triangle? Well I mean I have a fiance already so it’s already pretty poised for that, right? We are so set for this! And your mother will come around. Who wouldn’t? I’m lovely.”

“I will do my best,” she promised, nodding enthusiastically as she began to think over all the different sorts of cliches possible. The word ‘love’ had caught Phoebe a bit off guard, blinking up at him. After the recent fiasco of him pretending to admit his love to her, Phoebe wasn’t sure how she felt about it, but she merely crinkled her nose and laughed a bit as her hair was ruffled. Blowing a piece of hair out of her face, she reached up to do the same to him. “... and I love you,” she reluctantly responded, if only to mess his hair up as he had done to her. “It had it’s moment,” she agreed, smiling a bit at the memory. “I like it so much I went there five years instead of four!” Phoebe grinned at her own fake reasoning, though it quickly turned to a pout. “Well, Pawdrey only liking you and me is a cliche, isn’t it? I feel like it is,” she said, her head tilted to the side. “Will you sweep in on a bike? I’m okay with that alternative. Or, I guess I’d be the one sweeping in to stop your wedding, huh? I can sweep in on the bike. One with, like, the two sweets and a cute basket in the front,” she decided confidently. “... I don’t know about that. After Seth, I think she’ll be pretty sad about me ending up with anyone else. He set up very unfair expectations.”

Whilst Amalia had noticed Phoebe upon entering the bar that evening, and noticed how different she looked (she might have stared a little too long, in fact), she’d done her best to pretend she hadn’t throughout the evening so far. Not in a mean way but, considering she was finally on a date with the guy who had stood her up and then cancelled on her twice, she wanted the night to go smoothly and couldn’t afford any other distractions. Later, when getting another round of drinks, she jumped as she heard Phoebe’s voice coming from beside her. The tone was a little worrying, as was the slurring and the expression on Phoebe’s face but Amalia found herself selfishly glancing back at her date a few times before responding. “Sure” she sighed, offering Phoebe a smile (the date had put her in a good mood, okay?) before holding up her index finger. “Just give me one second. I left my purse over there.” Quickly, Amalia disappeared to make her excuses to the guy she’d been with and reappeared, holding out an arm for Phoebe. “Now when you say you don’t feel safe, we’re not going to have anyone trying to fight us as we’re leaving are we? Because my beautician won’t be very happy if I chip this nail varnish” she teased, hoping she might get a smile out of Phoebe and then she could worry less. 

If Phoebe hadn’t been drinking, she definitely would have been more aware that Amalia was with someone else, but of course, she was really only focused on the people who were staring at her, and then the other girl. She glanced around and waited for Amalia to come back, her gaze following her to see she was talking to a male before she came back. Phoebe had the questions on the tip of her tongue, but she held them off for a moment. “I don’t think fighting, no. I didn’t make anyone mad, I don’t think,” she said, glancing around before turning back to Amalia, looking suddenly offended. “Your... your beautician? Do you have one other than me? I mean... whatever makes you happy, I just-” She ducked her head, sniffling dramatically. “It’s fine. I don’t mind.” It was a lie, clearly from her depressed tone, but that still didn’t stop her from letting her curiosity get the best of her. “Who was that guy you were talking to?”

Madison had spent most of her night chatting with the bartender, who happened to be a good friend of hers. It came in handy when she needed free drinks. Knowing she was in charge of opening her store the next morning, she was about to head home when the woman sitting beside her touched her “Uh…what?” her eyebrows furrowed, sharing a confused look with the bartender. She felt bad for the girl, realizing she was upset. “I’m heading out soon, because I work tomorrow so it’s definitely not a problem to drop you off–but,” she swallowed, trying to hoose the right words. “Do you have your phone with you? Are you sure you don’t want to call someone you know better?” 

Phoebe had really thought she knew the girl, so there was an almost uncomfortable feeling that settled in her stomach when she realized she was wrong... and a guilt, because she still wanted to insist that the girl help her. Phoebe just wanted out as soon as possible, and with company that looked nice. “Sorry, it’s just... I’m in kinda a rush?” She nodded reluctantly. “You can say no, of course! Totally. I don’t want you to feel like you have to, or anything, I’m just... I wanna get out, but I don’t want to go alone. I’ll even give you a snack, or something? Or money?”

“You say that like you think I haven’t met your cat. Pawdrey would be so thrilled to have the run of the place as long as he was fed,” Evan grumbled, still having some animosity towards the cat after their encounters. He did honestly think that the cat would be fine and held back on actually saying something rude about him for Phoebe’s sake. “See? You’ll be caught up and be able to nerd out with the best of us,” he assured her with a bright grin, despite the low light meaning it couldn’t be seen. “Marshy, it takes more time than that to starve. Besides we have phones. One of us could just text someone for help or call the building managers or something like that, right? The twenty first century is an amazing thing.” He shrugged his shoulders, though he likely should have said something about that before rather than sticking around in here but he also wanted to be sure his mother was gone. “Excuse you, I look beautiful as always. And this is an adventure because it’s something new and exciting! Who knows what could happen.”

“... that’s not nice. I think he’d miss me,” she said, pouting dramatically at the thought of Pawdrey only liking her because she fed him. “... I don’t think I’ll ever nerd out like that. Maybe about nail polish and make up! I know everything there is to know about all of that! It gets me totally excited. That’s like the same thing, right?” Phoebe nodded excitedly, ducking her head down for a moment and happy to focus on the conversation over being stuck for a few minutes. “... then call someone!” She poked him, almost scowling at the obvious solution she was too scared to think of. “... we could be stuck in here forever? ... oo, or we could start having super deep conversations about our lives in case we die, and we just wanna get it off of our chest, right? I’ll start! In fifth grade, there was a girl named Jenny who stole my Valentine. I might have given this guy, Jonathan, ten dollars to cut her braid off... he did it.” She let out a dramatic breath. “Gosh, I’ve been holding that in for so long. Do you think any differently of me? I get it, I’m evil. I know.”

Phoebe: If I read the text before I could even wake up, I totally would have woken up sooo fast! I don't care if that didn't make sense, you get it!

Phoebe: Evan, where am I gonna get pizza this late at night?

Phoebe: Can you make sure to save a nice place for me, too? I could probably bribe him with a nice haircut or something. Surely even the devil wants to look nice every now and then.

Listen, I don’t usually do this but uh, kinda lost my wallet… you got a couple coins to spare? I just need a little change for the bus, nothin’ else,” Besides a car, a new set of clothes, hell maybe a place to sleep that wasn’t a park bench - but, for now, he’d settle with getting a ride back to the park he’d recently been calling ‘home sweet home’.

The voice had Phoebe turning on her heels, raising an eyebrow at the question. “Oh! Oh no,” she said, frowning. “Do you know where you last had it? I couldn’t imagine what I’d do if I lost mine,” she responded, all the while pulling her purse out. “I mean, it’s not... here,” she said, just handing him a twenty dollar bill, along with a few quarters. “I mean, you’ll obviously need more until you find your wallet! I’d be happy to try and help you find it. It’s always in the last place you’d ever think to look. Those darn things.”

Zoey hadn’t been starring. At least that’s what she was going to tell herself repeatedly until she believed it. She certainly hadn’t felt he need to swallow uncomfortably as a strange and almost entirely new feeling bubbled up inside of her. It was only when Phoebe leaned over to her that she looked away, face heating up immediately. It wasn’t really that Phoebe looked amazing in her outfit–she lacked the confidence to really make it work–but somehow it just left Zoey feeling overly warm and uncomfortable despite her never really having thought about girls in quite that way before. “… I… uh… yeah. I can. I don’t know how much fucking… safety I’ll provide but uh… sure. If that’s what you want.”

Phoebe really needed to learn how to leave Zoey alone, clearly. Getting drunk and then asking her to take her home was just rude, but Phoebe was feeling a little too desperate to get away from everyone’s gaze... though Zoey seemed to be similarly flustered by the look. The difference, of course, was that Phoebe never minded a female’s gaze as much as she did a male’s, so she didn’t comment on the fact. “Just nice to have someone with me. If anything goes wrong, then we’ll be a pretty good team to get out of it, I think.”

“I’m pretty sure he said he had plans already which… so rude honestly. He wants to marry me but won’t even support my free taco dreams?” Evan made a face, shaking his head at the idea and not paying attention to her expression as he worked the ring off of his finger. He didn’t think he’d taken it off since Levi put it there so it took a little bit of effort. “Okay, new plan. We go get the free tacos and you let me eat yours and then we can find a place with free dessert,” he suggested, nodding his head enthusiastically before pausing. “And when I say you let me eat your taco for once I meant that without any double meaning or innuendo. Mind out of the gutter Marshy.”

“He already has plans on Valentine’s Day? That don’t include his fiance?” Phoebe raised an eyebrow, wondering what sort of plans anyone could have without their significant other. She decided not to overthink it, instead focusing on the ring slipping off of Evan’s finger, letting out a breath in almost relief before flashing a gaze of innocence when she realized. “So I don’t eat anything but dessert? That doesn’t sound totally healthy,” she pointed out, “and I wasn’t even thinking that way! For once. Now I am... but it’s Valentine’s Day! If you ever wanted to do anything like that, you’d have to put it in a much.... less gross sounding way, anyway!”

Talking about her reputation (or anything personal, really) so frankly to someone she wasn’t remotely close to wasn’t something she would normally do, but occasionally Frannie slipped. Well, whatever. If this girl was distracted enough to approach her out of all people, the least she could do was warn her.

When did she get so … nice? 

The question, of course, made Phoebe pause. It had been proven quite a few times now that Phoebe never was the best judge of character, mostly because she liked to assume the best in everyone until given a real reason otherwise. The girl looked nice enough. What could someone with such a nice face do to her, but the question had her opening and closing her mouth a few times, trying to think of a reason other than you’re pretty and that makes me trust you with my life. “... you’re one of the few people not totally focused on what I’m wearing, which makes me feel way better,” she said, finally, with a careful nod. “Just... company on my walk back would be nice. You can even come in for a - a snack, or something. I really just have a lot of fruit, and cookies, but I have a friend who might get upset if you eat too many of those,” she explained. “Not that you have to come in. I’m not dangerous, I promise. Super safe, super... I’m not helping, am I?”

“The local taco place put out a promotion of free tacos for couples willing to kiss in front of them. Does that sound a bit weird and voyeuristic to anyone else? … but also free tacos. So I think the point I’m trying to make here is: you and me, free taco date on Valentine’s Day. You in? I’ll even take this ring off if that helps. Free taco beats plastic ring any day.”

Phoebe loved love, but she never actually celebrated Valentine’s Day with someone else. She had always been happy to equally spread out her friendly love to all of her friends equally, not caring much about it otherwise. So, she was definitely taken back by Evan’s suggestion, though there was a certain pleasure in seeing him pull the ring off. “You don’t have plans with Levi?” She looked a little too pleased by that, most likely, but she tried to keep an even expression. “Do we also get dessert? Because I don’t like tacos that aren’t Evan specials, but find somewhere that offers free dessert and I’m totally in.”

Emilija glanced at Phoebe, not used to seeing her in such a…revealing outfit.  There was that one in her dream…or was that real life?  Everything was blending together which is definitely why she needed these drinks tonight.  Still, she definitely considered Phoebe a friend, and the fact that she looked kinda scared plus the slight slur in her tone made Em’s decision easy.  “Sure Phoebs” she said, putting money on the bar to pay her tab.  “You’ll have to remind me where you live, and let me pet your dog if you have one.  Otherwise, you owe me one”, she smirked, hoping to let the girl know she was kidding.  “Rough day?”

Phoebe visibly relaxed when the other agreed, letting out a breath in relief as the other rose to her feet. “Thank you,” she spoke immediately, her eyes finally lighting back up to the normal shine she usually kept. “Oh! No, no, no dog. I do have a cat, though! ... but he’s not super friendly, so that’s still kinda questionable,” she explained with an almost shy laugh, ducking her head for a moment before finally looking back up, nodding quickly. “I totally owe you one. Whatever you want!” She flashed a smile, crossing her arms over his chest. “I guess you could say that, but strange kind of seems like a better word, really.”

Tom was close to ending his shift on a late Saturday night, standing out in the cold making sure the streets were safe and clear. Tom didn’t want to brag, but he had a pretty good sense of things. It made him good at his job. It’s really his reasoning for standing closer to this stranger as he too noticed some drunk fools eyeing at her for a bit too long for his liking. Regardless, he was a bit surprised at the interaction not thinking she’d actually ask him for help. “Me? You trust me too?” Tom started off saying dumbly before realizing he was wearing a giant gold badge on his chest. “Oh. Right, of course. I don’t know how often you get into strangers cars or police ones for that matter but I can drive you too if you’re cold and all. Besides, as good as you look in those shoes, I’m sure it’s the equivalence to walking on broken glass.”

Phoebe had really just been going after whoever wasn’t making her feel uncomfortable, and that just so happened to be Tom. She was clearly relieved to see the badge on his chest, as well, nodding slowly at his questioning as she crossed her arms almost protectively over her chest. “Should I... not trust you?” She raised an eyebrow, though the corner of her lips tugged up to show she wasn’t all that worried. “... will I ride in the back? Because I kind of have it on my bucket list, but I don’t ever want to... you know, get arrested,” she explained with a light laugh. “... but that would be super, super great. I’d owe you. A lot. I would offer something with my job, but you don’t seem like the kinda guy who would jump for joy over a free manicure... not to assume things! If you are, you just made my favorite people list.”
