I wasn't sure how to respond to this reading. The main bulk of the reading comes from the interview in which we learn about the artist Jenny Holzer. I deiced to take some my favorite truisms from Jenny Holzer's list and provide a short response.

"IT'S NOT GOOD TO HOLD TOO MANY ABSOLUTES" I think it is important to question your own beliefs at times.

"IT IS MAN'S FATE TO OUTSMART HIMSELF" As a man, yes.

"ILLNESS IS A STATE OF MIND" I like the notion that your mind has the power to overcome anything including illness.

"DEVIANTS ARE SACRIFICED TO INCREASE GROUP SOLIDARITY" We remove deviants from society becuase they make people question social norms.

"BAD INTENTIONS CAN YIELD GOOD RESULTS" I like to think of Karma when I read this one.

"ABSOLUTE SUBMISSION CAN BE A FORM OF FREEDOM" When you are no longer in control of your actions you are free from the choice to make them.

"MUCH WAS DECIDED BEFORE YOU WERE BORN" Parents have the best intentions, even if their values or priorities are skewed.

"REVOLUTION BEGINS WITH CHANGES IN THE INDIVIDUAL" Can't change the world if you can't change yourself.

"TAKING A STRONG STAND PUBLICIZES THE OPPOSITE POSITION" Drawing attention to what you think is right draws attention to what you think is wrong too.

"WHEN SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS PEOPLE WAKE UP" It takes great tradgety to create great change.

This is closest to the 3rd option for reading response, but I had more to say than what could fit in hashtags.

Doubt. The provocation that something or someone may not be all that they say they are. Barbara Kruger uses doubt as a theme at the Hirshhorn Museum. The word can have powerful context in many places; a courtroom, politics, a marriage and others. My favorite use of this word was in relationship to politics. Candidates have to present themselves so assuredly that they don’t back down from there position in fear of giving their constituents doubt. The world does not operate in absolutes, and acknowledging doubt instead of avoiding it is important for society to function properly.

Font Licensing

A young boy from a small town with wide margins was pondering his alignment when one day his professor assigned a reading about fonts.  “Thinking with type” it was called. He read the assignment but failed to see the pt behind it. So, after he finished his reading, he found a random font in the text and decided to call it his own to impress the other students. Then he heard a knock at the door. Behind the door a man said “Hello, I am Tobias Frere-Jones. I am here with the EULA, and I believe you have altered my font Gotham!” The boy was taken to jail.  Seek permission before using some ones font, or you too may ponder your alignment behind bars! #Thinking With Type #Gotham #Tobias is Dapper #Alignment.

Miriam: Hey Ellen, is your book about fonts?

Ellen Upton: OMG no! It's a book about how to use them!

Miriam: What do you mean how to use them? Don't we just use them to write stuff?

Ellen Upton: Well, sort of. We use them display text, but they're also super useful for conveying the meaning and emotion of the text.

Miriam: Whatever, text is text.

Ellen Upton: Ugh, wrong again. Typefaces have been around for way longer than you have, and writers and artists have been using them for centuries to help make writing more appealing.

Miriam: Maybe they used to, but now everything is typed so it's all written in like Times New Roman.

Ellen Upton: As if! Fonts progress with the times, and now there is a whole field dedicated to graphic design and the use of typefaces for creating interesting pieces to see and read.

Look around! Basically everything you read will be in a font chosen specifically to make you, the reader, feel a certain way. If you just paid attention to the words around you, you'd be surprised by what you're missing.
