Old Habits Die Hard, Rebirth Harder (An Interest Check/Recruitment)
Men far too well dressed for this part of town.
The smell of ash and copper.
These are the things that the guard stood at the mouth of the back lane is paid to overlook. These are the things he most certainly will, if for no other reason than they know so much about him. So, so much.
Directed further down the wet cobble, on this rainy night, told only to ‘come when the newest turn of Menphina’s face has fallen under shadow, and the sky hangs heavy with tears’, you see it - the marking you were told to watch for. It is a small image of a broken crown.
You open the door, and while expecting a filthy warehouse, are met with lush and lavishness. An interior unlike anything else. And sat like a king upon a throne of the dead, is he - a beast of cracked porcelain and greying mane, with a gaze like the last sparks of a wildfire.
He beckons to you, to sit at a table, and discuss.
He calls it a ‘Family Matter’. And when you stand, some odd bell or so later, you carry with you such a family that tends to these matters - one that transcends blood or belief. It is a family forged of those with like minds, and like goals. It is one that stands tall and stands strong, for those who would bend, would have broken long before they reached this interview.
And you are initiated - taken care of, so long as you prove your worth.
Do not forget your worth.
So - I’ve been interested for quite a time in involving myself with crime roleplay again, and Jun’to is at a point in his life where he would be much more backdoor and secretive about it. Thus. an organization that meets in back rooms and discusses their acts, while working with (and against) others to both pursue ventures in which they are solely paid in dirty coinage, and in which they aim to augment their legal avenues of profit, would make the most sense.
So. what am I looking for?
Discretion is the name of the game. If you have no sense of it, he has no need for you. While this doesn’t mean you can’t flaunt your connections and it will certainly become an ‘open secret’ so to speak, in which talk and rumors of the organization exist, if are not seen as much mroe than so, there’s not going to be any wearing your allegiance on your sleeve and throwing down solely over who is and isn’t an ally
Consequences are real. This is an unfortunate and oft-neglected truth, but there is most certainly an issue wherein people want to play criminal organizations as an accessory or an extension of a criminal character, rather than their own freestanding entity designed for their own purpose rather than to make a character with connections cooler or scarier. This means that sometimes we will lose in our plotlines. Sometimes we will win. Sometimes there won’t be any wins or loses, and sometimes the strif will be internal. While i’m not saying you need to let me kill or maim your character as narrative sees fit, there’s not always going to be situations where things end hunky-dory, and roleplaying with this group means that there will be a price to the things done - the extent of which will be discussed and consented with every single individual involved. Jun’to himself will, if this develops how I want it to, sometimes even be on the table with consequences of death, and some fates he may find even less preferable.
Loyalty is key. Am I asking for your characters to be undyingly loyal to Jun’to and his organization? No. Am I saying ‘no turncoats, traitors, usurpers, or undercovers’? No. But at the base of things, crime and espionage aren’t fun when they’re betrayal circuses either. I love shaky alliances but anyone who has watched recent crime television knows that an entire cast of double-triple-quadruple agents doesn’t make for a good narrative, so please clear it with myself or other admins of the community I plan to build before pursuing such a plotline.
All good stories need points of conflict. Nothing is perfect, and anything that is perfect is a lie and/or just boring. I want there to be rivalries, I want there to be grudges, and vendettas. I would love to collaborate and plan consequences with roleplayers on the right side of the law. I would love to antagonize other factions of all alignments. I want stories and events and investigations and hell even legal proceedings! I want all the drama and tension of a good crime thriller.
Themes that will be considered and examined include:
Chocobo-race fixing/gambling
Import/export and smuggling
This organization will very much be a family-style criminal organization in which the bonds forged are to be considered stronger than anything else, and I am excited to see the dynamics as those bonds are tested.
