it's not lost on erin that she's the one messing everything up this time . not the other way around . she tends to shut down for the most part this time of year . or at the very least closes herself off from those that care about her the most . cole was never an exception , as much as she found it hard to believe that he cared about her sometimes . yet , here he stood in all of his glory , being the friend she needed right now despite her pushing . " yeah , no thanks . it's not that bad . i can handle it . " she's lying . hand wraps securely around the backpack strap , fingers crushing it within their grip . why the hell did the car have to break down on her ? why did he have to be the person who drove by after it had happened ? and why was it so freezing cold out today ? she tries to get pass him but it's no use , he's blocking her path . he watches her, noticing the tension in her shoulders and the way she clings to her backpack like it's an anchor holding her in place. she's pushing him away. it’s a defensive mechanism, and he knows it. cole is guilty of disengaging the second someone actually showed him any concern, too. he's trying to do better. recognizing how isolating it can be—not just for himself, but for those who care about him, like erin did at one time. and he still hopes that she does. it's been a while since she'd been out here . far too long since she'd let herself take in the moment and stop letting her life pass by based on what other people wanted it to be .
