In evening saw E Flynn in “Santa Fe Trial [sic- should readTrail]”. Producer so busy sitting on fence to keep north and south pacified on negro question and John Brown that the picture reminded me of nothing so much as a tightrope walker having an awkward moment.

In evening beat Gus in 3 of 4 games of Russian Bank- then saw a silly picture about a bunch of fanatical autograph hounds called “The Youngest Profession.” A few good touches- particularly John Carrol as the street corner Hercules turned diplomat to woo one kid’s mother and make daddy jealous- his linge and passionate eyes were very funny indeed for the diplomat he was supposed to portray.

In the evening, however, I did get into town to see a very amusing picture: “The More the Merrier.” One scene in which McCrea Kept trying to fondle Arthur while both talked of impersonal things was particularly funny. The slow, steady movement of his hands had hers removing his was riotous with the background of words which neither one heard. It was the height of clean humor in good taste.

Went to town today and had a good steak dinner following which I took in the movie of the Red Cross: “Tennessee Johnson-” it was only fair.

Then too ARC [American Red Cross] theater to see “Cabin in the Sky” with Ethel Waters singing beautifully. The song “Consequence” just tickled me.

In evening saw G. Rogers and C. Grant in “Once Upon a Honeymoon”. Lots of hocum and a false note of patriotism, weak points in a clever portrayal of an ex-striptease queen. Her love of jewelry is played up very well and entertainingly.

Then saw “Philadelphia Story” for second time. It was excellent. Repartee was brilliant and stimulating, but the subject seemed terribly trivial to be treated with such seriousness. Oh well- we get our share of prejudices out here.

In Evening saw my fourth movie show since we landed here: a triple feature which kept me on the ground on my butt for 6 hours!
“Rythm on the River” with Bing Crosby and Mary Martin for a second time- and enjoyed again.
“Pierre of the Plains”- a cockeyed picture about the Canadian woods, not plains- the casual hero is cute, and some clever, subtle, dirty scenes
“Babes on Broadway”- Rooney and Garland. Thoroughly enjoyable altho similar to “Strike up the Band”
