Hiding In Plain Sight
This is Christmas. Thanks Reverend Hamlin
It's been COLD lately. Time to fix a problem that stood out when the temp dropped to -15 F. Stories From The Shop ~ Installing A New Door Threshold

Just dropped in to see what new old stuff they had.

This was a new one for the shop. The Gage Self Setting Plane.
I like to restore tools. I really wanted to sharpen hand saws so I read and studied and asked the guys on the Old Tool Mailing List lots of questions. None of the questions were about pruning saws. When I set up a saw sharpening demonstration at Burgess Antiques in Galesburg, MI, John brought two hand saws and asked me to sharpen them. What were the odds one would be a pruning saw?
So you want to sharpen your one man crosscut but you don't have all the tools you've seen? With a bit of scrap and a file you can make it work.
I had a batch of junk, broken, brazed carbide bits. After I got the South Bend 9C settled in the new shop I decided to try sharpening some of the broken bits. They wore through the wheel on my bench grinder pretty quickly. Hand sharpening them on a diamond plate would work but spending 10 hrs rubbing the bit on a plate wasn't how I wanted to spend my free time. I like to carve stones so I have a selection of diamond bits for rotary tools. I decided to set up one of the larger wheels and see how it did. I was very happy with the result.

Building and installing a wooden bench vise on my woodworking bench and installing a quick release vise on my project bench.
Mom taught us how to sew on a button, patch our pants, and make some simple things. Her sewing machine was really nice so we never tried it on multiple layers of heavy cloth. The Singer 66 will sew 4 layers of denim, leather, and a multitude of other materials.
