Veins Like Cages

It starts in the marrow, deep, gnawing,

a starving animal caged inside my ribs,

pacing, clawing, howling, demanding to be fed.

My skin is a prison too small for the agony beneath it.

Nails dig into my arms—deep, deeper—

trying to scrape out the need,

trying to carve out the ache that coils,

tight and wet, behind my teeth.

I shake. Sweat. Freeze.

The world flickers, too sharp, too slow,

every second a blade,

every breath a raw, open wound.

I can hear my own blood screaming.

I can feel my nerves unraveling,

peeling back like burned paper,

curling into nothing.

And still, the hunger.

The endless, devouring hunger. I just need one more.

Just one more to soften the edges, to fill the hollows,

to make me forget this body,

this hunger, this fire eating me alive from the inside out.

I can taste it before it comes.

I can feel it before it touches me.

Like an old lover, a cruel god,

a promise whispered through gritted teeth.

And then—silence.

Warmth.

A second of peace

before the hunger starts again.
