Ex Cementificio Fratelli Pesenti Alzano Lombardo BG - Italy This illustration is now available as a print, link: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/obviouswar/cementificio-pesenti/ The Alzano Lombardo cement factory is undoubtedly the icon of that industrialization process that took place in the twentieth century that affected the Bergamo area making it famous throughout Europe. Born by the will of the Pesenti Brothers in 1878, through the readaptation of a paper mill, from 1883 begins a long and progressive structural stratification. Purchased in the mid-twentieth century by Italcementi, thus becoming the company’s historic building, it was decommissioned in the seventies for loss of technological capacity (the definitive shutdown of the ovens took place in 1966). The particularity of the spaces did not allow to establish new activities so it was abandoned. The cement factory was subjected to a protection obligation in 1980, as a monument of industrial archeology, by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage which recognized it as an “extremely important physical testimony” value. In fact, it was built with the almost exclusive use of the same materials that were produced there: white, gray cement, the three varieties of Portland and Grenoble ready-to-use cement. The complex combines technological innovation with the stylistic eclecticism typical of the historical period in which it was born. It is divided into two main parts, divided by a straight internal road: one to the east, plastic and monumental, intended for the production of cement; the other to the west, more compact and ornate, with a warehouse function and for some years the company’s headquarters. This area, converted into an exhibition space, hosted the ALT Arte Lavoro Territorio space from 2009 until the end of 2017, a museum that collected the collection of architect Tullio Leggeri.
