All things considered, this isn’t really a dire situation, not yet. Sure, Mal’s lost all her long-term memories, but they’ll find a cure, hopefully.
Evie’s currently trying to make sure Mal doesn’t get into too much trouble while she doesn’t even remember her name. Really, whoever decided that playing around with magical chemicals was a good idea needs to reevaluate their life.
Mal’s pointing at the Tourney field, and Evie gently steers her away so they’re walking in the direction of the dorms.
“Organized sport, you hate that.”
“Yes, I’m very sure.” Mal once said she’d rather swim a lap around the Isle than be part of organized sport so Evie’s pretty sure she’s right.
She has to admit, Mal is kind of adorable like this, all loopy and asking so many questions. Evie wants her girlfriend back, of course, but she wouldn’t mind this Mal for maybe an hour more.
They’re back at the dorms when Evie decides it’ll be better to just stay in Carlos and Jay’s room, that way the three of them can keep an eye on Mal. She’s just raised a fist to knock on their door when Mal tugs at her arm, and when Evie turns to her, asks very seriously. “Are you single?”
Evie laughs just as the door opens, ushering her in past a confused Carlos. “Sorry, I’m off the market.”
Jay, who’s picked up on what’s happening almost immediately, barks out a laugh. “Yeah, she’s very, very not single.”
It’s kind of comical how sad Mal looks at that. Evie lets herself enjoy it for two seconds more before maneuvering Mal toward one of the beds and sitting her down.
“Alright guys, take care of her while I go to the lab and help with making the cure.”
Carlos, who’s sat next to Mal and is currently studying her very intently, looks up. “Why don’t you just kiss her?”
Evie stops, backtracks, and turns around. “What?”
“You said it was magical chemicals, right? So, like a spell? True loves kiss, breaks every spell, yadda yadda.”
It’s honestly not a bad idea, and certainly wouldn’t hurt to try.
Evie walks over to the bed, and Carlos stands up so she can sit where he was. “Hey, Mal.”
Her girlfriend turns, smiling brightly, which is kind of weird, now that she thinks about it, Mal only ever smiles that widely in a grudging manner. “Me?”
Evie huffs a laugh, “Yes, darling, you. Would you mind if I kissed you?”
And if Mal, cheeks flushed and eyes wide, isn’t a sight to behold, then Evie doesn’t know what is.
“I thought you weren’t single.”
“I’m not, but I’m sure she’ll be fine with it.”
Evie leans in, but Mal’s scooting back. “Cheating isn’t nice,” she says, frowning.
And it’s really very heartwarming to know that Mal, sans her long-term memories, still has the same slightly skewed but overall justified moral compass.
“Nope, I’m dating you, silly.”
“Yes.” Evie’s quite sure of that.
Mal thinks it over for a moment, then nods. “Okay, then.”
They both lean in at the same time, and Evie lingers for an extra second before moving away. Mal’s green eyes are glassy for a moment longer, then they clear, and Evie knows it’s worked.
“True love’s kiss, works every time.”
Mal swats at her arm, and there’s that grudging smile she’s most familiar with.
“I can’t believe I asked if you were single.”
“Happily taken,” Evie says, and delights in the pink that dusts across Mal’s cheeks.
