perhaps  curiosity  killed  the  cat ,   but  satisfaction  brought  it  back ;    and  gilbert  was  always  up  for  solving  a  mystery ,   especially  one  that  seemed  to  be  forgotten  or  lost  to  the  tides  of  history .    and  as  he  remembers  back  on  the  tunnel  he’d  seen ,   the  more  intrigued  he  is  about  searching  it  and  looking  for  something  new .

maybe  he’d  even  record  it  and  put  it  up  on  youtube ,   or  tik tok .    could  he  call  it  ghost  hunting  if  there  weren’t  ghosts ?    ah ,   but  what  if  there  were !    the  idea  excites  him  more  than  it  should ,   and  if  erin  wasn’t  worried  before ,   she  should  be  now .

“    well  if  no - one  knows ,   someone  should  find  out !    ja ?    ”    gilbert  beams  with  a  determination  that  should  be  damn  near  illegal .    this  might  turn  out  harmless  or  maybe  it  won’t ,   but  somehow ,   that  makes  exploration  more  worth  it .    “    come  with  me  to  that  tunnel  and  we  might  find  something !     and  hey ,   who  knows ,   we  might  find  a  mystery  to  solve .    or  learn  what’s  happened  there !    you  can’t  say  this  isn’t  the  most  fun  idea  i’ve  had ,   this  would  be  so  awesome ...    ”

“    ha !    ”    gilbert  lets  out  a  laugh ,   grin  ever  so  evident  on  his  face .    now  that  had  to  be  the  most  truthful  thing  he’s  heard ;    brandenburg  and  prussia ,   how  different  could  you  be   as  personifications  when  you  once  shared  the  same  land ?    the  answer  was  always  obvious .    gilbert  was  a  warmonger  with  a  complex  he  couldn’t  even  begin  to  handle ,   even  to  the  bitter  end .    and  dear  maria ...

well ,   he  couldn’t  say .    they’d  always  been  so  different ,   right  from  the  start .

“    a  little  different  is  right ,   huh ?    ”    gilbert  leans  on  a  hand ;    he  can’t  tell  if  the  grin  is  still  there  or  if  it  faded  with  him  calming  his  laughter .    “    you  know ,   i  think  i  can  name  a  few  people  who  would  have  a  heart  attack  if  there  were  two  of  me  in  any  scenario .    too  much  awesomeness  in  one  room  can  kill  a  man .    ”

what  is  there  to  say ?    gilbert  could  only  hum  in  response  to  her  comment .    he  kind  of  wishes  he  was  lying  too ,   given  the  sheer  horror  and  pain  of  his  story  that  almost  seemed  too  brutal  to  be  true .    but  gilbert  wasn’t  in  the  business  of  blatant  lies ,   just  bent  truths .    he  isn’t  sure  exactly  how  he’d  bend  this  one  though ...

“    it’s  kind  of  sad  that  i’m  telling  the  truth ,   but  regardless  of  what  happened ,   i  am  still  just  as  awesome  as  always .    ”    gilbert  leans  back  with  a  slight  grin ,   albino  eyes  scanning  over  her  face  for  a  moment ,   reading  her  reaction .    “    representing  the  teutonic  knights  was  a  wild  time !    i  often  had  to  eat  whatever  i  could ,   and  going  on  my  christianisation  crusades  were  as  bad  as  they  could  get .    but  you  know ,   i  got  my  ass  handed  to  me  a  lot  by  lithuania .    he  was  kinda  terrifying  back  then ,   and  i  was  nowhere  near  as  powerful  like  i  was  when  i  became  a  kingdom .    ”

it  would  probably  come  to  no  surprise  that  gilbert  had  gone  through  some  very  morally  questionable  things  when  he  was  younger .    and  some  horrible  things .    and  some  really  weird  and  outlandish  things  to  top  it  all  off .    but  he  realises  now  that  his  story  about  him  being  roasted  alive  in  his  armour  was  a  bit  too  much  at  once ...

gilbert  has  to  laugh ;    only  thirty - five  years ?    ah ,   what  a  sweet  summer  child  she  is  if  she’s  only  been  nervous  for  35  years  of  her  life .    he’s  personally  been  at  least  a  little  nervous  for  every  part  of  his  life !    nonetheless ,   he understands well ;    and  while  he  won’t  admit  to  such  a  thing ,   gilbert  is  still  going  to  take  the  chance  to  tease .

“    you  know ,   you  should  go  for  a  world  record  with  that .    ”    he  pauses ,   his  grin  slightly  dropping  for  a  moment .    “    though  i  guess  they  wouldn’t  know  for  sure  if  you  were  nervous  for  that  long  since  there’s  no  evidence ...    ”

he  shrugs  and  his  full  grin  returns .

“    just  know  that  i ,   the  truly  awesome  person  i  am ,   am  here  to  support  you  through  every  nervewracking  experience  you  might  have  in  the  future !    except  if  it  involves  a  deep  body  of  water ,   rocks ,   and  rope .    but  we  can  go  bungee  jumping !    ”

sometimes  you  have  to  wonder  if  gilbert  can  even  keep  the  conversation  about  another  person  with  the  way  he  always  diverts  from  the  original  topic ...

This is a headcanon re: the carte blanche Kaiser Wilhelm II gave Austria-Hungary when it requested assistance with the Serbian conflict. Basically, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist, which Austria opportunistically seized as a chance to wage war against Serbia, eventually moseying along to ask Germany for help. (Seriously, it took three weeks, and historical accounts show that most Austrians were pretty meh about the archduke biting the dust.)

The Kaiser, who was a bit… lacking in the diplomacy department, gave Austria-Hungary his support. Since Serbia was allies with Russia (who, by extension, was allies with Britain and France), the blank check pretty much sent out a signal that Germany was willing to go to war with them should Austria-Hungary make its move… so it’s safe to say that it’s one of the events that led to the outbreak of World War I.

Character-wise: Germany always regarded Austria highly from a personal standpoint, I think. During his gung-ho pan-Germanism years, he tended to question why Austria had been excluded since he lacked the history with him that gave the Prussia-Austria relationship its mutual rivalry… actually, from his birth in 1871, you could say he was crushing a little bit. Ludwig, who’d bring all the Germans together under one Reich… yeah, he had some fantasies about that. Which Austria never really reciprocated until some time into the interwar period, but uh, none of that went right either.

Prussia, on the other hand, had the foresight (that the Kaiser lacked) to predict what the blank check would do to the underlying spiderweb of alliances between empires. He saw Franz Josef’s letter for the paper-thin excuse it was and argued with both the Kaiser and Ludwig over it. Alas, neither of them particularly wanted to listen, least of all Ludwig, who saw this as his chance to finally come to the aid of someone he’d long looked up to.

If you can’t tell ,  this has easily become one of my favourite ships ;  their dynamic is ultimately pretty interesting ,  because Prussian and English relations have always been a bit on-and-off throughout history .  However ,  the UK also proved themselves one of Prussia’s few precious allies considering Prussia’s uncanny ability to make enemies .

I see Gilbert and Arthur feeding off each other’s opposing energies and learning from one another ,  while also respecting their personal boundaries .  In saying that ,  it doesn’t stop Gilbert from being a menace ...

prussia  was  born  to  fight  the  same  type  of  battles  as  austria ,   but  was  a  hooligan  who  did  nothing  but  fight .   gilbert  has  fought  for  his  own  survival  since  he  was  born  and  is  very  strong  as  a  result ,   and  has  even  maintained  this  strength  in  modern  times  despite  his  status  as  a  region .

While all of his journals are organised by month and year ,  Gilbert’s books and paperwork are organised by alphabetical order ,  year of publishing ,  and if he has folders ,  the colours are also in order .  He’s very pedantic about it and hates it when someone doesn’t return things to the way they were .  Where do you think Ludwig learned to be so organised and neat ?

With kids ,  Gilbert is a strong mix of the “ well connected and tells really bad jokes ” dad and the emotionally estranged uncle that lets the kids get away with almost everything .  Is there an in between ?  …  No ,  not really .

He’s just learned to be less strict on kids after raising Ludwig himself .
