Tina narrowed her eyes for a moment, concerned. It hadn’t occurred to her what Peter might actually be feeling about the whole thing (and boy, was she feeling like a shitty friend for only just realizing.) “What’s confusing?” she asked quietly, nudging his hand. Then, because she was thoroughly worried now, she reached up and put her hands on either side of his face to make sure he was looking at her.

“Peter, why would I change? I won’t. I’m gonna be the same me forever and ever. We’ll be the same us forever and ever, no matter what happens. I swear on it! We won’t change, I’ll make sure of it.” She couldn’t imagine otherwise; praying for nothing to change, in fact. Especially with James in the picture. Tina was quiet for a moment, considering Peter, and then decided she didn’t like the worry and thought cracking a joke would be a fantastic idea. “What if I finally have my growth spurt though? Does that count?”

Peter looked back at Tina as she took his face in her hands. “Okay,” he said softly after a moment, deciding to believe her. He always believed Tina.

When she mentioned her growth spurt, he laughed, pulling away from her hands even as he took them in his. “You can have your growth spurt,” he said with a grin. “But you can’t grow taller than me!”

Tobias rolled his eyes, shaking his head at Peter’s mimicry, pulling out one of the strawberry flavored popsicles that was left. “You want a popsicle?” he asked “Umm I think there’s one of the green ones left. Maybe a blue”

Peter sat up in the hammock at the mention of popsicles, his game forgotten. “I want a blue one,” he called down. Green was his favorite color, but blue was the better flavor. Raspberry trumped green apple any day of the week.

“Where were you?” he asked curiously from his perch above Tobias.

Tobias hadn’t been in his and Peter’s room since that morning. He’d spent a decent portion of it in the room that was technically his, doing some writing as well as some more…private moments in the larger of the two ‘hiding holes.’ The rest of his time he’d spent wandering about the town, managing to pick up a few things at either a five finger discount or simply charming his way into a few things. Despite, his sometimes childish behavior the young man could be rather charming when he chose to be. 

“Peter” he called as he stepped into the room, shedding his coat and going into the kitchen “Peter are you here?” he asked as he opened up the freezer looking inside to see if there were any popsicles left from the last box he’d swiped from the Ababwa Corner Store

“Peter! Peter are you here?” Peter mimicked in Tobias’s voice from his spot in the hammock above Tobias. He grinned as he hid up there, glad Tobias was home so he wasn’t alone with his thoughts anymore. The game was childish, but Peter didn’t care. He wanted a space where he could still be childish, and he had that space with Tobias. It seemed to be the only safe space these days.

Peter didn’t really know what to say to all of that. He sat and listened as instructed, but at the end all he could think was that none of this computed with the vision of Hook he had in his head. To think that he’d gone through such terrible things made him sympathetic, and more like a Lost Boy than Peter wanted to admit. 

“Okay,” he said finally. He looked over at the twins in the crib. “So are you just . . . their dad now? Forever?” He wasn’t sure how he felt about that either.

“Because–” Tina sighed, resigned to the fact that she would just have to come out and say it whether she liked it or not. “Because it was like the Wendy-Bird all over again, that’s why.” It wasn’t nearly as bad, but the shock to the system certainly made it feel that way at first. She chewed nervously on the inside of her gum and felt completely irrational in her reaction. “I-I know I am. You’re my best friend too! I guess I just– I don’t know, panicked or something. You know I’m not very good at keeping my cool. I’m not mad at you, Peter. I promise…”

The Wendy-bird? What Peter felt for Tobias wasn’t what he’d felt for Wendy, was it? He didn’t think it was. It was complicated, so he didn’t like thinking about it for too long.

“Everything in my life is really confusing and different right now,” he said finally. “I don’t want us to be confusing and different. You’ve always been the same. We’ve always been the same, and I really like that. It helps me feel better about my life when I think about you and know that you’ll never change, that we’ll never change.” He bit his lip. “I need you not to change, Tina. Please don’t change.”

“I won’t. I didn’t like the game this time,” Tina admitted through a huff. Peter’s questions had her crossing her arms defensively, in an attempt to conceal her frustration. It was easy to explain, and absolutely impossible at the same time. She couldn’t understand why everyone but Peter understood her feelings for him. She wasn’t about to use the J word out loud, but thought maybe, if she was lucky, he could guess. “I wasn’t thinking very clearly when I started the game. I was… green. I was feeling green.”

Peter frowned, looking at her with confusion. “Why were you feeling green?” he asked, releasing her once he decided she was telling the truth about not liking the game. “You know you’re my best friend, right?” he said quickly, afraid for a moment that she was doubting how he felt about her. “I married Tobias, but you’re Tina. My Tina. You’re always going to be my Tina.” He honestly couldn’t imagine life without her. He didn’t want to. “Are you mad at me?” he asked with a faint frown, still not sure where all these feelings she was describing was coming from.

The whole situation with Peter was rather complicated when it came to James, but he couldn’t really worry too much over it because he was a father now. Seeing he still hadn’t found a babysitter yet, he didn’t have any choice but to take Mary and Anne to work. 

He hadn’t thought he’d bump into Peter that way, even more he didn’t think Peter would be interested in them in the first place. Yet here he was standing in front of them, the girls curious eyes directed on him. He could already sense Mary being interested in the pointed boy while Anne hid herself into the crook of his shirt.

“Their names are Mary and Anne, they are twins born on the first of January 2017.” He introduced them. “They are my daughters.” Which was half true. Temporary and on paper they were now his daughters. Well Peter didn’t need to know the full story of it all, he already showed he didn’t care.

The sight was comical, especially when Mary got hold of Peter’s finger and shook it. “I guess Mary says nice to meet you.”

Peter stared at the twins, still not sure what was going on. He watched as Mary shook his finger, pulling away from her and taking a step back. “Since when do you have daughters? Where is their mother? Who is their mother? Why are they here?” It didn’t make any sense, seeing Hook with kids. It felt like his entire brain was scratchy and blurry.

Tina flinched as Peter grabbed her arm, glancing down at his hand. Had it been anyone, she would have shaken them off. Guilt was evident on her face from the moment Peter mentioned Tobias. “I wasn’t actually going to kill him, Peter,” she sighed, following it with a nervous laugh. She might have been over-dramatic, but she could barely leave him stuffed in a cupboard, never mind actually harming him. But it was obvious Peter wasn’t pleased about it. “I couldn’t kill Tobias, he’s my friend and I like him too much. It was just a game!”

“Well . . . don’t play those types of games with Tobias,” Peter said with a frown, letting her go after a moment. “Why were you even playing it with him? You only play that game when you’re annoyed with someone. What did Tobias do?”

Peter knew Hook had said things were done, but he didn’t really mean that, right? He’d never stopped bugging Peter before, so surely he wasn’t really going to stop bugging him now. 

But Peter really wasn’t expecting to see Hook with two little girls the next time they ran into each other. He stared at the children for a long moment, wondering how they could be there. It didn’t make any sense.

“Who are they?” he asked, pointing rudely.

“Tina! I’ve been looking for you everywhere,” Peter said, hurrying over to the girl and grabbing her arm, perhaps a little tighter than necessary. “Tobias told me what you did. That you tried to kill him. Why did you do that?” He frowned at her. “He’s the only Lost Boy we have left.”

Slowly she pulled back her hand, grateful he hadn’t stormed off. “Love is beyond explanation and multi-faceted and-” her head shook back and forth. Doubt already creeping in as she defined something even she was unsure if she had fully felt. “I don’t know what you’re feeling. Just be careful because as far as I can tell not wanting to lose someone and love aren’t the same things.” 

A sigh slipped out in one long breath as she leaned back against the bed, letting her head hit the blanket. Wendy had spent years, expended so much energy trying to control Peter’s life. Trying to convince him to do what she knew to be best. And even if she was right, Peter, for all his denial, was grown. He wasn’t her responsibility anymore, even if the thought had tears burning in her eyes and her throat tightening. “Look if you’re happy… I will stay out of it. No lectures, no meddling. Just, promise me that you’ll leave the marriage as is, in spirit and between you both. No papers, no government involved.” She held out a hand, pinky extended, to cement it- a vestige of their youth.

She was probably right about love and not wanting to lose someone not being the same thing. She was Wendy, and Wendy was usually right about things. Peter bit his lip, chewing on it some as he watched her and tried to understand where she was coming from, but he really couldn’t. They came from such different worlds. He was starting to come to terms with the fact that she would never understand him, just like he would never understand her. It was a realization that left a sting of pain in his chest, but he felt a little better for knowing it. It wasn’t that they were bad for each other or anything. They were just . . . too different.

“Why do I have to keep it between us? It’s not bad, right?” Peter frowned faintly at her pinky finger, not ready to commit to something he didn’t understand. “I know you’ve kissed girls.” Not much of what Wendy did escaped his notice. “If it’s not bad for girls to be with girls, then it’s not bad for boys to be with boys, right?”

James didn’t really understand why Peter was looking at him that way. What was it with people close to him not being aware of his wealth. Was it because he came on a bike to work. He didn’t really enjoy flaunting it. “If you want an elephant and a kangaroo, I rather buy you a zoo. Though why would you want an elephant, they smell- they are big and they don’t really do much. And kangaroos are just violent.” A castle? “Are you tired of your room already? If you want I can give you some pocket money if you want to re-arrange it?” 

He frowned at Peter’s outburst and then rolled his eyes. “It must be hard for you to have someone who actually gives you what you want. You know Peter, I’m pretty sure you’d miss me if I was gone.” He offered the boy a smile. 

“This-” He pointed to both of them. “Is not okay. I’m going to say this now because I have kept quiet for far too long. You have been treating me awful, and truly just because of age - what are you five? I have given you food and shelter - heck if you wanna try school again I’d pay for it. If you want something quieter I’d even teach you. But this - this I don’t want. I don’t want to have you being afraid of me thinking I’d abandon you when you should know by now that’s not going to happen. Peter, I’m tired of fighting with you, I’ll give you what you want - but make sure it’s something that makes you happy. It’s a waste of money otherwise.”

He sighed. “I don’t know how much time you need, but if you could trust me a little it’ll already be a step forward.”

Peter stared at Hook as he went on his spiel, talking about how he’d buy him a zoo or give him money to rearrange his room, talking about how Peter would miss him, if he was gone. Peter scoffed at the idea. Miss him! Like he would. He wouldn’t. He didn’t care at all about Hook. Why would he? He was a pirate. Being a pirate had more to do with just age it was . . . everything adulthood stood for. All the promises they broke. All the lies they told. The way they throw away people like they mean nothing, even kids.

Though, Hook hadn’t really done any of those things. Not really.

“Nothing makes me happy,” he muttered under his breath, it slipping out without him meaning it to. He scowled at the doorframe, glancing sidelong at Hook after a moment. “You’re weird,” he said finally, stepping back and shutting the door in Hook’s face, not wanting to deal with any more confusing feelings.

From the way Peter shivered Tobias wasn’t sure if he liked him touching his bare skin like that or not. The older boy had pulled away, though, asking then about a tickle fight. He wasn’t sure what to say, but then Peter was moving his hand under his shirt and stroking his skin and he twitched a little. He wanted to tell him the truth, but even more than fearing being rejected by the older boy, Tobias feared that Peter would say it was pirate stuff, and Tobias didn’t want to be a pirate. So, instead, he swallowed and did what he did so often and pushed things down deep into the pit of his stomach before letting his lips curl into a smirk, “Oh are you so sure about that?” 

“Are you challenging my tickle fight skills?” Peter asked, raising his eyebrows. He rolled them over, pinning Tobias beneath him, as he snaked his fingers up Tobias’s shirt with a devious smirk, digging his fingers into the other’s sides and armpits, alternating to cover as much tickle ground as he could.

A horse? James didn’t know much about horses. But luckily for him, he did have a friend that does own a horse. He reached in his pocket to grab his cellphone. 

“Give me your phone so I can give you my friend’s number, his name is -” He paused for a second knowing he didn’t go by Eugene anymore. “Flynn Rider, he’s a university teacher who has a horse. I myself know nothing about it but he can tell you what you need to buy to maintain it. Maybe a little something about the breeds as well.”

“If you have picked out a horse, just tell me what else I need to buy. I’m just telling this now, it’s your friends and your responsibility to take care of the horse. If the horse died because you didn’t feed it properly I’m not getting you a new one.”

Wait, what? Had that actually worked? Peter stared at Hook dumbfounded, not sure what to say or how to take this new information. Was it really that easy for Hook to get him a horse? “What if I want an elephant?” he asked challengingly. “Or a kangaroo? Are you gonna get those things for me too? What if I want a castle? Are you just gonna pull out your little cell phone and make that happen too? Give me a break!” Hook really couldn’t be this easy to persuade, could he? Surely not. What happened to being mean and giving him a hard time? He was acting like he actually liked Peter, which . . . no. That’s not how this worked. That’s not how any of this worked.

Tobias was thankful for a more comfortable position when Peter pulled them to lay on the floor. The fingers that were curled into his shirt loosened and slid down to his hip, before sliding just slightly underneath his shirt to touch his bare skin on his side.

Peter shivered, as he felt Tobias’s hand snake up his shirt to touch his skin. He pulled back with an arched eyebrow. “Are you trying to start a tickle fight? You know I’ll win,” he warned, reaching his own hand down to slide up the side of Tobias’s shirt, running his fingertips along Tobias’s skin as he contemplated if he should start there or go up to his armpit to get maximum tickle advantage.
