Viola × wittrockiana (modern garden pansy)
The ancestor of the pansy is a small Eurasian wildflower called Viola tricolor. This flower was known in ancient times and has been actively cultivated since the middle ages. By crossing this wildflower with other species in it's genus, a number of colors became available. Selective breeding over the centuries also resulted in a much larger and rounder flower
Until the late 1830's all pansies had narrow nectar guides on their petals. Then a pansy was discovered with an amazing mutation - the nectar guides were gone, replaced by large blotches of color. All pansies that have this feature are descended from this single specimen. The International Cultivar Registration Authority divides Viola varieties into four subgroups. The 'Modern garden pansy' differs from the three others by possessing a well-defined "eye" in the middle of the flower. This is how the pansy got it's face.
