At the grounding touch, James relaxed considerably. Like a man half asleep he did his best to keep his attention on the Doctor- or was it John?- but the throes of a Wander weren’t easy to reckon with. The shimmering starlight in the Time Lord’s eyes was captivating, and James didn’t really process the words spoken in his direction. Instead, he delicately traced the line of the Doctor’s angular cheek with a fingertip- marveling silently at it’s solidity despite at the same time seeming so ethereal.

Okay, so he was too far gone for words right now. That was okay. Comfort and familiarity, that was what he needed right now-- he’d learned a long while ago that nothing could break James out of his Wanders until he was ready.

“C’mon,” he urged, gently, giving James’ hand a gentle squeeze in his and leading him off in the direction of one of the corridors-- the one that led to the closest of the TARDIS gardens. “Reckon I know where's best for you t’be, right now.”

“grip” (nine)

The Doctor’s touch was chilly against his flushed face. Large blue eyes that were glazed and out of focus lifted from the point on the floor where they had been staring. Tiny golden motes of dust were flickering like flames without a candle- delicate pinprick fireflies that made everything shimmer and dance in a captivating manner. 

                       When the florist looked up, the Time Lord’s eyes were almost too bright to look at- their icy color shielded over by a glow of gold so strong that James squinted a little. The rest of the face was unforgettable no matter what state he was in. Generously sloping nose. Prominent ears. An intensity no other man seemed capable of holding.

                       James tried for a smile but it was drifting before it could even fully cover his face- as though he’d forgotten why he was doing it. Unconsciously he sought out for something to grip onto as a physical link to reality and found soft leather beneath his hand- gripping tightly.

It was the first time since they’d boarded the TARDIS - since all the chaos with the Kadaal, since he’d opened the fobwatch and become himself again - that the Doctor had seen James slip into one of his trances. He knew what to do, though, the memories of being John all still there and untouched. He sent up a silent thank-you to the TARDIS, too-- after all, the fact he’d ended up wandering into the console room was likely not a coincidence. 

“It’s alright, lad,” he reassured him, taking James’ hand in his free one and threading their fingers together. “I’m right here, not goin’ anywhere. D’you remember where you are?”

“Have I–? Yes– yes, I imagine I have.”

The Doctor swayed just a little on his feet, leaning on a nearby wall for support as he led Nicole back in the direction of the TARDIS. 

“Nothing to worry about, I promise. Scout’s honour.” 

He held up one hand and made an odd sort of twisting motion with his fourth finger and thumb– and then frowned. That didn’t seem right. (There were bloodstains on his sleeve, too, which didn’t help matters.)

“Is that–? No, no, that’s the Deimesian scouts,” he muttered to himself, thinking for a moment before holding up three fingers instead and looking woozily pleased with himself. “There we are, there’s the human iteration.”

“I bet they’re real fucking sure they’re the epitome of heroic action,” Nicole growled, as she moved away to wet a cloth and grab for a handful of antiseptic wipes. She hooked a foot around a stool to drag it in front of him, and plopped herself angrily onto it to start dabbing away the blood.

“Fucking hell, Doc, I ain’t gonna let you stitch yourself up! I can do it, I’ll figure it out. I know how to sew stuff that ain’t skin, an’ I’ve had stitches before.”

“I really don’t mind, you know. I’ve done it before.”

The Doctor reached for one of the wipes and began to dab cautiously at an area Nicole had yet to start on, ignoring the unpleasant sting of antiseptic.

“When you’ve been travelling as long as I have, it helps to know how to patch yourself up in an emergency. Not that it’ll be this bad for long,” he added, in what he hoped was an encouraging tone. “I’m a very quick healer.”
