Rami Malek at Comic Con 2015
“Oh, no. I can smell ‘em. I even bumped into one the other night. Can’t smell their burnin’ flesh though. What’s taking so long?”
“I’ve gotta chop them up first, man.” He said, gesturing in the direction of the furnace. “Grab a cleaver and help me?”
There was a moment Gage felt dreadfully guilty about the way he’d been acting towards Quinn. Despite his attitude, the other was still here for him, offering the same comfort he’d gotten before Sean ever stepped into the picture. Gage felt himself relax, his panicked heart falling into a more even paced beat as he followed Quinn without hesitation.
“What if we’re stuck like this forever? Everything’s fucked up if that happens…” It was hard to imagine going to a different gang, or would they all stick together and say fuck it to whatever species they’d become? The mention of Sean actually drew forth some concern. Despite being jealous of the younger vampire, Gage knew the stress of having worked to come as far as he had only to become something else would overwhelm him. “I can help you look for him.” Gage offered. “Maybe he was lucky enough not to get caught up in this weird shit.”
Watching Gage’s demeanor change, Quinn gave a faint smile to show that he had no fangs at the moment. He knew that it would be strange, this whole situation, but the best thing to do for that moment was to actually go and see how far this whole change went. Running a hand through his hair, he opened a window and stuck his hand out and into the sunlight. To his amazement, it wasn’t hurting. It felt like it did when he was a child; warm and inviting. Nipping his bottom lip and shaking his head, he gestured for Gage to do the same.
“You want to help me? Thank you. We’ll all need it since we’re not what we usually are. Just keep calm, okay? If you are a werewolf, from what I can tell, you might change slightly with your anger. Let’s keep that down to a minimum as much as possible.” Running a hand through Gage’s hair gently to show that he was there for him, he looked in the direction of Sean’s room while hoping he was in there. “Maybe he’s in his room, sound asleep?”
Gage could hear sounds coming from nearby, something heavy slamming against walls or doors, but he paid it no attention. He was still in shock, staring at his own reflection and wandering what kind of twisted dream this was. Only, it felt too real to be anything imagined. “What’s happening to me…” He whispered fearfully, placing a hand to his chest and feeling the racing heartbeat there. He could feel the warmth coming from his own skin and the complete absence of blood lust.
Quinn’s voice managed to register, Gage turning his head towards the doorway and staring at him with widened and glazed eyes. “Quinn…” He said, voice shaking. “What the fuck is going on? How….how can I be alive again?” But not only that, he felt some other presence within him–like a ravaging beast lying in wait.
There was a lot that Quinn couldn’t answer, but he wondered if he could figure out what exactly happened. Maybe a witch cast some spell on their city again? Or maybe it was in the water? He had no idea, really, because it wasn’t something that would make any sense. Running his sweat-coated hands through his hair as he tried to keep himself calm, Quinn walked over to Gage and placed his hands on his cheeks in worry. “We’re all living creatures, I have no idea how nor why, so we’re goin’ t’ have t’ figure this fuckin’ shit out.”
Kissing his forehead in comfort, he pulled back and gestured for Gage to come with him. “I’ve got some weird fuckin’ powers right now, like I can make objects fuckin’ move. I saw Draven without a shirt and he’s got fuckin’ Faerie wings. From how hot your skin feels, I think you’re probably a wolf.” He tried to explain, hoping to whatever fucking higher being there was that it would relax the young former vampire. “I have no fucking idea what Sean is. I don’t want to scare him.”
Gage usually slept without much issue, rarely waking and tossing around once he’d settled down. This time however, he was practically startled awake by some foreign change to his body he couldn’t immediately place. He was burning up, practically sweating under the covers and he bolted up into a sitting position in confusion. There was a thudding in his chest that he was convinced he was imagining, and though not usually needing to breathe, Gage was now practically gasping. “What the fuck?”
Gage bolted up out of the bed, rushing into the bathroom and flipping on the light. His skin held color to it, cheeks flushed as if fevered. “What the fuck?!”
Quinn had been in the treehouse when he heard the loud thuds coming from around him. At first, he had no idea that it was his heart. It sounded like bombs and he quickly shot up in his bed to look out the window. His mind was a million miles away since he wasn’t fully awake, causing him to grab his rifle and aim it at the trees. The thing was, there was no shrapnel from the bombs nor trees and dirt flying in the air. What the fuck was going on?
Wanting to flit down from his treehouse, Quinn realized he couldn’t run as fast. But that’s when he saw the gun rising from his hands and spinning around as if it were dancing. All of his weapons began to do that and all he could do was climb his way out of his treehouse. They continued to follow him and the loud thuds, he realized, were coming from his chest. Licking his fangs, despite them not being there, he felt tears collect in his eyes out of fear. He scrambled inside while his weapons slammed into the door after he closed it. Going into the bathroom, he saw Gage standing there with life coloring his skin. “What the fuck...”
Though Gage immediately pushed against Quinn’s grip, the other vampire was much stronger than him. He stared right back into those fierce eyes, taking in each word that only seemed to add fuel to the fire burning in him. He couldn’t count the amount of times he’d been told to do one thing or suffer the anger from someone else–that his actions and way of feeling should be for everyone’s benefit but his own. Gage felt bitter. Quinn had gone off for weeks, Cerberus continued to lack any care for him, and Draven was still in some slump after Noah left. Only Grayson and Shade had really helped him lately. Coupled with the fact this was the first Christmas Gage was away from home and family and he was overwhelmed with guilt at his parent’s suffering, the young vampire was far from himself. “How about you focus and take care of your own and I’ll take care of me.” He snapped back defiantly.
As Quinn took in how Gage was acting, the sound of his voice, the emphasizing of Sean, he knew exactly what was going on. Gage was such an open book. He’d seen men get edgy like this, especially around the holidays while out in ‘Nam. This was no different, really, since Gage was new to all of this, same with any of the fledglings. “I do take care of my own, that’s the reason I left, and if you takin’ care of yourself is bein’ aggressive towards your own, then I know exactly who to beat some sense into. If Cerberus isn’t gonna handle ya, I’ll sure as fuckin’ Hell give him a stern whoopin’. You got that, Baby Boy? You need him right now more than myself. I’mma find him, kick him into your corner, an’ he’ll be able to handle your ass. I wanna help ya, but y’ don’t even wanna fuckin’ help yourself.”
“No, I didn’t or anything else for that matter. I went home, came back, and you were gone. I couldn’t feel your presence…” Illya’s gaze didn’t waver as he drank in the sight of Quinn. “Will you tell me why you left?”
Watching the other’s gaze roam over him, Quinn bit down on his bottom lip before placing his hands on the other’s shoulders in comfort. “I had to leave to help train my fledgling. He wasn’t doing well and I needed to isolate him and myself to get him in order. He’s doing better now.”
“Hmm? And why is that exactly?”
“I shouldn’t leave because then people will try to cross our borders.”
“I know,” he said with a sigh, scratching at the back of his head. “At least I get my own room finally.”
“Yeah, not without a lot of hard work, that’s for sure.” Quinn said while ruffling his fledgling’s hair. “You made me proud as fuck out there, little boy.”
“Oh, and why’s that? I didn’t notice it falling apart with you.”
Quinn sighed as he ran his hand through his dark locks. “You’re tellin’ me that you can’t smell the hunters just waitin’ to cross our borders? If I didn’t leave, the only thing we’d be smellin’ is their burnin’ flesh in the furnace.”
“Jealousy?” Gage snorted, “Please. I’m not jealous of your little bundle of joy.” Oh but he was, and he was only giving attitude about it now to poorly hide the fact that Quinn was right.
A growl left the veteran and all he could do was grab Gage by the jaw and hold him against the wall. Pressing his forehead against his surrogate fledgling’s, he stared right into his eyes while bearing his fangs at him. “It’s interesting how my brother and I are not jealous of one another, how we are bonding because we have the same Sire. You are not jealous of all of the other fledglings I’ve been handling, yet you’re showing a high amount of it towards the one I made myself. You could be a good vampire, a helpful member of the Gang by actually being kind and helping Sean out, or keep being a bickering little shit who’s obviously jealous which will obviously get you into trouble by Draven as well as your Sire and myself. It’s your call.”
“Wow. You have a winner on your hands, don’t you?” Gage replied, annoyed that it still didn’t explain why he’d been left behind. “I still could have went. Hell, or you could have told me so I didn’t think you’d just ran off with your little fledgling.”
Quinn growled to show his irritation, his eyes bleeding to their bloodlustful color. “I didn’t take you with me because he didn’t need your jealousy interfering with his recovery and training! I barely informed my own brother so if you keep your attitude, I’ll do harder training on you during the next storm that comes by.”
“And you couldn’t take me because…?”
“Because he got high, I wanted him to go through a withdrawal, and then I bootcamp’d the fuck out of him.” Quinn said with a raised brow as he stared into Gage’s eyes. “The boy got high, ate human food, got sick all over the bathroom, and almost ate more. He was a complete danger to himself. He needed to be isolated.”
“You’re damn right about that. Where the fuck have you been?”
“I had to take Sean out of here. He needed to be isolated in his training because this City was going to kill him.”
“But, you know, we’re back now at least.”
“Yes, we’re back, and you’re still under my supervision until I know you can be on your own in Linden again.”
