Open Books Volumes A â E
The Open Books project explores connections between printed objects and forms of exhibitions. It consists of a series exhibitions, events, and a publication that offer potential spaces to experiment with these interactions.
Open Books Volumes documents this research as it goes along, questioning its own status as a catalogue. Each iteration gives birth to new content that complements the previous one. As a pile of books stacking up in a library, invariably connected to one another by their successive readings...
Volumes is a catalogue, a collection of captions, images, a series of invitations, a bookmark left in places where the editors would like someone to stop. Or is it the actual archiving of an object in real time? In any case, it is what accompanies, completes and supports a research, somewhere between an open book and an exhibition, with a permeability flowing constantly from one another.

OPEN BOOKS volumes A â E, Launch in PARIS
Open Books, Volumes A - E, is a catalogue, a collection of captions, images, a series of invitations, a bookmark left in places we would like someone to stop. Or is it the actual archiving of an object in real time? In any case, it is what accompanies, completes and supports our research, somewhere between an open book and an exhibition.
Edited by Charlotte Cheetham and Sophie Demay. Printed and published by Hato Press.
Launch, with Charlotte Cheetham & Sophie Demay, in Paris, June 4 2015, at Ofr Gallery, 3 Rue Paul Dubois, Paris, 4-8pm. As part of Christopher Green & L.I.E invite..
Performance, 7pm, "The Man to be Seen from Mars - Pierres Flasques Détaillées" by Alex Balgiu and Fabrice Mabime.
"The essence of books is for me the perception of space, the continuum of our existence. All dimensions are but measures of it, as in relative perspective of our vision lie volume, line, point, giving shape, distance, proportion. Movement, light, and time itself are also qualities of space. Space is otherwise inconceivable. These are the essence of books and as our concepts of them change, so must our books change. Since our experiences of space are, however, limited to momentary segments of time, growth must be the core of existence. We are reborn, and so in art as in nature there is growth, by which I mean change attuned to the living. Thus growth can only be new, for awareness is the ever changing adjustment of the human psyche to chaos. If I say that growth is the constant transfusion of human meaning into the encroaching void, then how great is our need today when our knowledge of the universe has filled space with energy, driving us toward a greater chaos and new equilibriums. I say it is the reader who orders and animates space, gives it meaning."
1 â Vittorio Gregotti, âAdress To the Architectural Leagueâ, New York, Octobre 1982, publiĂ© in Section A, vol. 1, nÂș1, fĂ©vrier/mars 1983, p. 8 2 â Georges Bataille, « Informe », in Documents, nÂș7, 1929, p. 382 3 â Camille Bryen, Jean Arp, « Incendie des Silex d'Os », in Temps TrouĂ©, dessins, bois originaux, papiers dĂ©chirĂ©s. Open Books, Volume E, Final draft, Wednesday 3 December 2014, 7pm - X Marks the Bökship, 42 â 44 Copperfield Road, London E3 4RR
With a wandering by Alexandru Balgiu from âThe New Rational Typewritingâ and contributions from Paul Bailey, AngĂ©lique Buisson, Loraine Furter, ValĂ©rian Goalec, AurĂ©lien Mole, Museum of Museum, Ghazaal Vojdani and Eleanor Vonne Brown.
The event is based on Open Books most recent chapter, Volume E. It acts as a 3D Mock up of the chapter. A final draft before it goes to print. A live edit. A rehearsal.
Since 2010, the project Open Books has been playing with the idea of spaces: the space of the bookâââits representation as an objectâââand the book in the spaceâââthe systems of its display in exhibitions.
This event lies precisely in between these spaces, at their crossroads, margins and intervals.
Dear Ghazaal,
Imagine the set-up. You are entering X Marks the Bökship. Itâs already quite late so itâs very dark outside. The room is 40 square meters, maybe more. There are few people, you thought it would have been busier. On your right, the wall is covered with bookshelves. Some are coloured, red or yellow. There are A3 prints with Xs on the wall. A big screen displays a looped video. They are scans of books. The subtitle reads Volume E. On your left, the concrete walls are covered with paper, it looks like plotter roll. They almost drop from the ceiling. Most of them are printed, some are texts, some are images. There is a self-standing shelf almost in front of you. It looks like stone but it may be concrete. Itâs not cold so you wonder what it is made of. Some blue and gold bookmarks are inserted in books. They have different sizes. They are sometimes marking the space between books. Standing on the top shelve is a foam structure, it could be an S, but its caption says itâs a model for a piece about conversation. The background music, barely audible, plays from a turn-table. The gallery neons are turned off so there are only small table top lamps. Some people are already standing. They are reading. Has it stared? You look at your watch, wondering if you are late. On the wall in front of you is a print out of an email asking about a piece of paper that may have been produced by Ryan Gander. Next to it is his reply. You recall a small piece of paper that you have seen on your way in. Next to a very high stack of books, two dictionaries are open, one is in French one is in English. One of the word on the page reads âreserveâ. Someone holds a camera and projects what it is filming in real time. The video zooms in on words, paragraphs, pages. The projection could be your eyes. Or maybe they are the readers eyes. Or even a third eye? There is an iPad on a table. And also a computer open. They both direct you to different websites. And, in the middle of all this, you see someone standing. He has small objects in his hands. The objects are wrapped by text, maybe papier-mĂąchĂ©. He is playing with them, reading from them. He is smiling.

Rendez-vous mercredi 9 septembre, autour d'un verre, au Cneai, de 18h Ă 21h.
performances: James Langdon & Stuart Whipps, Dominique Hurth
Dominique Hurth (The Reading Room) delivered a lecture/performance that presents in a dynamic live format a selection of publications and projects from the collection. The lecture/performance with focus on the potentialities that arise during the moments of the readers interaction with a publication. Fragments of content read aloud or displayed to the overhead camera, segue into observations on the formal and technical aspects, as well as subjective, associative thoughts and commentary. The physical hand gestures that frame and partially constitute the reading experienced are acknowledged as the range of titles and formats - chosen as representative of the The Reading Room's collective whole - interplay on the surface of the lecture table: loose pages of an art-zine spread themselves chaotically, books lay over folded out poster-publications, a leperello format publication slowly extends itself across the table and over the edge, text and images sit in mute observation as a vinyl audio-project circulates and plays out. Publications and Projects to be presented during the lecture/performance include those by artists: Justin Bland / Peggy Buth / Sarah Browne / Wayne Daly / Christian Jankowski / Susanne Kriemann / Christine Lemke / Sean Lynch / David Marmota / Ed Wakefield / Stefanie Seibold / Stijn Verhoeff / Mariana Castillo Debal / Juan Requena / Dominique Hurth
The Crystal Maze II â Freeake Library
Or A Vision in a Dream : A Fragment (1816).

Presented in London in February 2011, its first version aspired to examine this theme by exhibiting a selection of books, projects and installations. The projectsâ second version uses the corpus of publications exhibited in London as a starting point. Through a process of extracting references, the installation provides the public with a reflection and reinterpretation of the initial selection. This extended collection invites the public to discover and consult these objects and their apparent connections.

Open Books talks with James Langdon & Stuart Whipps, Anna Haas & Annett Höland (Werkplaats Typografie), Fraser Muggeridge - James Langdon is an independent graphic designer. Informed by an art education, his practice is concerned with the mediation of art and ideas. James is one of five founding directors of the artist-run gallery Eastside Projects in Birmingham and is also active as a curator, editor and writer. Book Show, curated by James Langdon and Gavin Wade, is an exhibition of artworks, objects and structures that address the physical form of the book. The starting point for the exhibition is Ulises Carrión's provocative series of aphorisms 'The New Art of Making Books' (1975). The visitors had the opportunity to enrich the school library by bringing in books they consider a must-read for every art and design student. In return, the book was traded for one of a multitude of artifacts specially produced by the Werkplaats Typografie. Over the course of the fair all goods of the exchange were presented in the project room. Hoi, Japan, 2010 What does this book say and do? Is the book, as an object, self-reflexive? What do you look AT when you look AT a book? What do you look FOR when you look FOR a book? As part of a workshop organized by David Bennewith and Sandra Kassenaar eighteen publications initiated and designed at the Werkplaats Typografie were selected and assigned - one publication for one student. The goal was to consider these questions by making a gesture towards their assigned publication and create a 'unique version' for the exhibition and bookshop. In 2009 the Werkplaats Typografie brought all their 17 students to the New York Art Book Fair. Across from a wall displaying the graphic output of the last ten years of the school, the students set up a production line where they photocopied pages from Werkplaats Typografie publications selected by the visitors and bound them into new books for as little as $5. - Fraser Muggeridge is a typographic designer based in Clerkenwell, London.
