Ophelia Selwyn. Slytherin. Sixth Year. Let me tell you what I do know: I am more than one thing, and not all of those things are good. The truth is complicated. It’s two-toned, multi-vocal, bittersweet. I used to think that if I dug deep enough to discover something sad and ugly, I’d know it was something true. Now I’m trying to dig deeper. I didn’t want to write these pages until there were no hard feelings, no sharp ones. I do not have that luxury. I am sad and angry and I want everyone to be alive again. I want more landmarks, less landmines. I want to be grateful but I’m having a hard time with it.

“There were no classes up there tonight,” he spoke up, looking at Ophelia. “Nor any approvals for any students to be up there. Curfew was over an hour ago.” James raked his fingers back through his hair before he nodded his head in the direction of the hallway. “Come on. I’ll escort you to your common room.”

Ophelia didn’t argue. It was where she was headed anyway, and if Potter wanted to waste time being her chaperone, more power to him... Still, she wasn’t one to let something slide without some sort of comment. “Pretty rich you playing the authority figure. I’ve heard your reputation. Most of my housemates says it’s proof enough Dumbledore’s lost it and should be sacked.”

Seeing a Slytherin outside of their common room after hours was honestly not something that surprised James. He knew that a lot of them could be trouble, much like members of his own house. He had no issue with Ophelia to date, and wished no ill toward any other Slytherins (apart from one if he was being honest). “Depends on why you’re wandering the halls. Care to enlighten me?”

A year ago, she could have been snotty, telling him that she could ask him the same question. Now, however, he was in a position of authority. That power, more than anything, was what rankled her. “I was heading back from the Astronomy tower,” she said shortly, not elaborating anything that could potentially help (or hurt) her case.

Ophelia’s sanctuary would always be a library, but late at night, when the Hogwarts Library was closed, the astronomy tower was a decent second choice. She’d gotten there early enough to stake her claim, finding a secluded balcony she could set up shop, her trusty charmed bag stocked with more than enough books to keep her occupied for hours - long enough that all her roommates should be asleep before she snuck back into the dorm sometime in the early hours. She’d also stashed a few firewhiskeys and some snacks from the kitchen - enough for the makings of a small party when, in truth, Ophelia was really just as content being on her own. In fact, being alone was probably the one thing she was supremely good at...

She didn’t turn at the sound of footsteps approaching, instead continuing to set up her own makeshift picnic. “If you’re looking to toss off under the stars, this spot’s taken.”

Being Head Boy was never something James had aspired to do. In fact, it was the last thing he thought he would ever be chosen for, but then one letter from the Headmaster later there he was pinning the Head Boy pin on his robes. Normally James would never had taken the new assignment seriously but with all the attacks and rise of the Death Eaters he was on alert. Even now as it was well after curfew he patrolled the halls to ensure all was well. When he rounded the final corner on his loop back toward the Gryffindor Common Room he spotted someone and his brow lifted, “So are you planning on actually heading to your Common Room any time tonight or do you want to be docked points for your house?”

Ophelia had no beef with Gryffindors, despite the fact their dear Headmaster clearly favored them. As something of a freckled stepchild of the Slytherin house, she even found it funny when her housemates whinged on about it - especially after the appointment of two unqualified (in their minds, though she could see the argument for Potter) Gryffindor head students. Still, a Slytherin being caught by a Gryffindor outside the Gryffindor Common Room was asking for trouble, so she remained on guard. “Are you actually providing me with the options, or is that a trick question?”

“–don’t get upset with me…” she mused, sliding her cards back into a pile on the table. “the cards don’t lie. If you weren’t prepared for that answer, maybe you weren’t ready to ask that question.”

“Or maybe I just wasn’t ready to deal with this shite this early,” she sighed, her patience wearing thin. There was something about Sybil as an outsider that made Ophelia want to be kind to her, but in practice, it got quite weary.

About Ophelia

Ophelia is the second child and bastard daughter of Godfrey Selwyn, a well-respected member of the Pureblood community and the owner of the Apothecary in Diagon Alley. She was the result of a one-night-only affair, and when her mother died in childbirth, her father took her in and raised her, which caused quite the stir in the family (and pureblood society) when she first arrived. While she was (for the most part) treated as any other member of the family, she has always felt different, and like an outsider.

Ophelia has a very strained relationship with her older brother, Nicolas. Nicolas’ mother divorced their father not long after Ophelia came into the picture, and a part of him will always blame Ophelia for the dissolution of his family. And on Ophelia’s end, she feels like she is constantly compared to her older brother, and found wanting. While Nicolas is naturally very gifted with magic and considered by all to be a ‘legitimate heir,’ Ophelia struggles and feels like she has to fight for her power and work ten times harder just to keep up. It’s caused them to have a very competitive, contentious dynamic.

Her mother’s identity was always a secret, but after sneaking around in her father’s study one night this summer, she discovered the truth: her mother was a squib. It suddenly made sense why magic never came as easily to her. She has yet to tell anyone that she knows the truth about her parentage. Right now, she still has the privilege of coming from a Pureblooded family, but as soon as everyone knows she’s half-Squib, she’ll be branded no better than a Mudblood or a blood traitor. Further, it would bring shame to her father, which is something she is desperate to avoid.

Her family has always been outwardly neutral (if slightly old-fashioned) in their views towards blood purity; they benefit from the prejudice, but it’s best for the family business if they don’t pick a side. However, in light of the revelations about her own blood status, Ophelia is strongly leaning towards the Order, and will eventually join and become a fervent supporter. Nicolas, on the other hand, will choose the opposite side and join the Death Eaters, which will further deepen the divide between the two siblings.

Ophelia is not a very skilled witch (she suspects due to her mother’s squib influence), but she makes up for it with determination. She will work harder and longer than anyone else to make up for what she views as her shortcomings.

A little bitter that even though the war is “over” and with that, the threat to Muggleborns is “gone,” there will never be a time when Squibs are accepted.

Although to any bystander the conversation would seem perfectly normal, Alecto could tell the girl was trying to push her buttons. While being polite was no crime, she hated the condescending tone. Her eyes narrowed, and she put down her fork. “Just save it, Ophelia, will you?” 

For a girl who clawed her way to top marks in her year, Ophelia sure could be dumb and stubborn; she was never one to let a fight go... “Not sure what you mean?” she replied innocently.

The potions classroom was always a dark, dank place, being located in the dungeons of the castle. It didn’t look any different in the evening except for the lack of students, save for two tonight. Dorcas sat at one of the worktables, and at the one diagonal from her sat Ophelia Selwyn, a Slytherin in the same year. They were waiting for Slughorn to come in and dispense his punishment.

It had been in class earlier that afternoon when Dorcas and Ophelia were paired up at random to brew a Hiccoughing Solution. Toward the end, it bubbled over and then sort of just…. exploded. It landed on Dorcas, Ophelia, a few of the students nearby, as well as Slughorn who had been with the pair beside them to check how their work was going. Despite the name of the potion, it caused them all to start hiccoughing uncontrollably. Everyone seemed to find it funny, except for Slughorn who looked quite embarrassed. He gave Dorcas and Ophelia detention for that evening straight after dinner.

Slughorn walked into the classroom and stood before the girls awkwardly, pausing a moment to look at them  before he spoke. “There are several cauldrons that require scrubbing.” Well that would be no big deal, there’s a spell for that, “And you’ll do it without wands.” Damn it. He stopped in front of Dorcas with a hand out, and she begrudgingly handed over her wand. He did the same with Ophelia. At the front of the room he put both wands into a long box with a lock on it, which appeared magically enchanted. “There’s the cauldrons,” he pointed to the pile of grimy cauldrons in the corner, “the cleaning supplies are in that cupboard on the left. I will be back to see how it’s going. Remember, no talking.” He turned to leave and Dorcas could finally roll her eyes. 

When he left the room, Dorcas turned to Ophelia with a slight smirk, “And how does he even plan to enforce that if he’s not here?”

Word had traveled quickly about the fiasco in potions, and as Ophelia trudged across the common room that night on her way to detention, she’d had to suffer under Nicolas’ smug stare. It wasn’t exactly a great start to the evening, and having to hand her wand over to Slughorn had done little to improve her mood. 

She sighed, kicking her feet off the table she had been resting them on as she made her way begrudgingly over to the cauldrons. “Which part? The no talking? Wouldn’t put it past him to have a spell for that... Have you ever heard of that Auror Moody? Rumor has it, he’s got a magicked eyeball that can see through walls...” The idea fascinated her, even as it seemed like a total invasion of privacy. 

Her nose wrinkled with distaste as she got a closer look at the filthy cauldrons. “Any chance you’ve mastered wandless magic yet?”

Alecto picked up the plate of toast and dropped it in front of Ophelia a bit too far away from the table, causing most of the bread to spill off the plate. “Oops.” She took a bite of her own toast, folding her arms across the table. “A ‘please’ would’ve been nice.”

She didn’t blink, picking up the toast and placing it calmly on her plate to slather with marmalade. She considered saying some smug about how please wasn’t the Slytherin way, but decided against it. “Lovely morning, isn’t it?” she said with a sarcastic smile instead.

When her brother was absent, Alecto tended to indulge in her bad habits a bit with a bit more intensity… hence the generous splash of firewhiskey she poured into her cup of coffee at breakfast. She took a swig, relishing in the burn of the hot coffee and liquor combined as the liquid slid down her throat. Why did everyone feel the need to be so damn loud at the great hall? When she opened her eyes, she caught those of a classmate staring at her. The irritation was plastered all over Alecto’s face when she responded. “Can I help you?”

“Yeah, I said, can you pass the toast?” Ophelia repeated her request, entirely unimpressed by the attitude. She hadn’t missed the way Alecto spiced up her coffee, no doubt paying for a wild night before. Her destructive habits were her own - Ophelia, for one, wasn’t exactly going to advocate on behalf of Alecto’s liver...

It was after hours, and Evan couldn’t sleep, so he snuck out of the dungeon (not like it was hard) and wandered around the castle. When he got to his usual spot, he hopped up to sit in the little alcove in front of a window, one leg hanging over the edge, swinging back and forth. He lit a cigarette and raised it to his lips. He let the acrid taste of nicotine fill his lungs, then exhaled, watching as a smoke snake slithered away from his mouth. A party trick he learned over the summer. Hearing footfalls behind him, he rolled his head against the stone to glance lazily down the corridor. “It’s after curfew,” he mused, voice monotone.

Fucking Rosier was not even worthy of the effort... “Groovy,” she scoffed. “Hey, did you hear? It’s after curfew,” she repeated it back to him mockingly, because if it was apparently important for her to know, then it must be for him too. “Yeah, some total knobhead who just learned to read a clock told me...”
