HOW TO PLAY (with a DApp!)

This is a detailed tutorial to tell you how to experience the OracleRoulette. In this tutorial, we will teach you step by step the basics of using a DApp(decentralized application)!
The tutorial is comprised of 5 steps:
Creating an account in MetaMask
Transferring your Ether to MetaMask from your exchange
Creating a Transaction and Paying for the Gas Fee
Each step in this tutorial is illustrated in great detail explaining why. If you canât wait and just want to get the gist, look for the bold texts and youâll be good to go!
MetaMask is a trusted account manager in the Ethereum world which bridges between a blockchain node and your web browser. It is super popular and everybody is using it! MetaMask can help you to manage accounts and sign transactions with ease.
In OracleRoulette, we have built the applicationâs core logic on top of Ethereumâs smart contract. If you are not very familiar with the concept of Smart Contract, please check out this article for thorough explanation. In short, with smart contracts, the code that controls the bet and pay-out of the Roulette Casino is published onto the Ethereum blockchain. Everyone can sees the logic it has been run and verify the fairness of each wheel result. Smart contracts cannot be modified once they are published and the logics written are getting executed âas-isâ, which means no body can manipulate its outcome! Thatâs the cool point of whole Blockchain thing is! Already excited?
Setting up the entire environment from scratch just to interact with the smart contract on a Blockchain node from the Web world is pretty boring and difficult. Thatâs where MetaMask comes in! All you need is just one click!
Currently MetaMask ships as an Chrome extension or a customized web browser named Brave. If you are using Chrome, you can easily download and install the extension at here. If you are not, you can try out the Brave browser, which is equipped with powerful privacy features(ad & tracker blocking, etc.).
From below, we will assume that youâll be using MetaMask from Chrome. But no worries! Things in Brave browser will be quite same!
2. Creating an account in MetaMask
When you have installed MetaMask, click on the MetaMask icon on the top right of your browser. After accepting terms of use, you will see the following:
If you have an account thatâs already created from MyEtherWallet or other means:
1. If itâs in the form âseed phraseâ, for example:

You can click on âImport Existing DENâ to proceed with existing wallet.
2. If what you have is a âprivate keyâ, for example:

Just create a new DEN, and you will have chance to import your account from there later. (Click profile icon > Import account)
If you havenât created any account from anywhere, just enter the new password and click on âCreateâ. MetaMask will then create a wallet(a manager of multiples accounts) and an account inside it for you. MetaMask will let you write down your mnemonic(a.k.a. seed phrase). Keep a good copy of it on somewhere(preferably physically on a paper) because this is the only way to recover your wallet!
After this anyway, you will have your very first account as âAccount 1â. If you click on ââŚâ, and then âCopy Address to Clipboardâ, you will get your account address. Or you can directly double click on the account displayed and copy it from there.
3. Transferring your Ether to MetaMask from your exchange
If you didnât have an account before using MetaMask, and if you havenât exchange the ether from a decentralized exchange market, in most cases you wonât have any Ether, or have it in a public exchange.
Now, what you need to do is to transfer the Ether from your exchange to your account in MetaMask. Itâs possible that some exchanges donât support Ethereum withdrawal, but most of them do. You might need to check if your exchange support Ether withdrawal in case it doesnât.
Go to the website of your exchange, if you look carefully into the menus, there will be a place for withdrawing the cryptocurrencies. Get into the interface for the Ethereum withdrawal, and type in the ethereum amount and account address that you want to send to, the one that we have gotten from the MetaMask.
These interfaces differs from one to another, so we didnât list all the how-to for every exchange. But if you canât really find the right place for doing this on your exchange, please try to google â<exchange name> ethereum withdrawlâ, look for the guide article, and follow the instructions.
All right! Now we have sent some ether to our MetaMask. Actually, what happened was that we have sent ether from the exchangeâs cold wallet to an address that we can actually interact with. All transactions happened in Ethereum Blockchain of course, and we are just using MetaMask to see its balance, make transactions using its ether, etc.
After sending it in exchange, it may need a few minutes to be confirmed in Blockchain. When you see your increased balance in your MetaMask, congratulations, youâre almost done!
Aside from Ethereumâs Mainnet(the serious one), there are other Ethereum networks like Ropsten or Rinkeby(there are a lot more!).These networks are created and maintained for the testing purposes, and they are called Testnets: the blocks are much more easier to mine, and itâs easy (or free!) to get Ethers in these networks. The testnet also facilitates the process of developing smart contracts. It makes it so that the developer can publish their contracts and test it in there before deploying onto the Mainnet(which costs actual money).
In OracleRoulette, itâs possible to test the application in testnet with test Ethers! Currently the Ropsten testnet is the supported one.
The DApp recognizes its target Blockchain according to how MetaMask is configured. Look at below. On the top left, when you click on the dropdown, MetaMask will show you which network you would select to use.
Try to click on the âRopsten Test Networkâ on our website, then your balance in the given account and the wheel history at the bottom of the page will change.
After switching to the Ropsten, letâs click on âBUYâ button:
Continuing with the âRopsten Test Faucetâ, you will then get to this web page provided by MetaMask team, giving away free test Ethers on Ropsten network. Press ârequest 1 ether from faucetâ, and wait a few seconds. The page will tell you at the bottom when the transaction is mined. Note that sometimes it may take a few minutes if the network gets busy. So if it is the case please be patient. In case the website may goes down, you can still get the test Ethers in other faucets. Search âRopsten ether faucetâ if you need more available faucets.
Now you have some ethers! Though you canât exchange it for real money, you can still try and enjoy the OracleRoulette in Ropsten network!
5. Creating a Transaction and Paying for the Gas Fee
After you finish betting with your own flavor, itâs time to spin! When you click on the spin button in our website, it will tell MetaMask to trigger a transaction that executes the smart contract code with the information of your bets(both bet types and bet amounts)
It will show you something like this:
The âAmountâ is the actual Ether that you send to the contract, and the âGas Limitâ and âGas Priceâ are about the Transaction Fee.
In Ethereum, when you want to get your transaction approved by the network, you need to pay the transaction fee to the miners who mines the block that will include your transaction. Transaction fee is determined by two things: the gas amount, and the gas price.
Gas amount(shown in MetaMask as âgas limitâ, which means maximum gas amount) is the indicator that shows how expensive your transactionâs operation is, in a code level. The more data you store onto the Network, or more CPU power you use on the Network, the more gas amount will be needed.
Gas price, on the other hand, is the price you are willing to pay to the miner per gas. You can of course decide your own gas price. you can set it to 1 gwei(gwei is a smaller unit for Ether! Check out more on etherconverter.online), or you can set it to 100 gwei. If you pay less, the transaction will be mined slower; if you pay more, the transaction will be mined faster.
Know that there is a thing called standard gas price! Just like the real world petroleum gas, there is an average price that people can agree on, and if there are more people driving and the gas demand is higher, the standard price goes up; if the opposite, the price goes down. In Ethereum world, miners want to maximize their profit by prioritizing the transactions according to their gas price, because of the âblock limitâ that limits the gas of operations can be contained in one block. So if there are a lot of people want to send transactions(e.g. a hot ICO), and the network gets busy, some senders will want to set higher gas price on their transaction so that their transaction can be quickly approved. If everyone does, the standard price will go up and you will have to pay more gas than usual in order to get transaction to be mined within the same range of time.
When working with MetaMask, MetaMask will automatically select a optimized gas price(not too slow or not too fast) for you according the information of the last block. But because Ethereum network is very capricious(amount of transactions by time is almost random), this estimation is prone to be wrong, sometimes the estimations is too low, or sometimes high. And if somehow you have sent a transaction with very low gas price than the current standard price, your transaction may be trapped into eternity.
If you think that a transaction is running too slow, you can open your MetaMask, and it will show you that you can reset your gas fee of the transaction. Set a higher price and watch it approved. To know how much is the âreasonableâ price for the gas price, you can always check out https://ethgasstation.info.
As a side note in OracleRoulette, the random wheel number generation is dependent on the âBlockhashâ of the block your current transaction is included, and it can only be determined when the block of your transaction is mined by the miner(miners âmine the blockâ by finding the matching blockhash). Therefore if your transactionâs gas price is too low to be mined, it will take forever to reveal the wheel number and decide the winner.
Congratulations! Now you learned all the necessary knowledge of using a DApp! You might have a hard time at first if you didnât know all these. You will learn to know the beauty and the greatness of the Blockchain and the Smart Contracts as you experience more about details and actual practices.
You may find Blockchain not easy because it is a sophisticatedly designed economic model, and the relevant technology is still premature. But itâs keep evolving and we believe someday it is going to eat up the entire economics of the world!
