yerin knew too many people in the industry for someone who knew no one, not really. to have been around for so long, yet feel so alone, it's a plight she's become stagnant in. this industry has no room for her anymore, it leaves her hanging on the railing, with any one sentence enough to knock her loose and leave her in the dust. it's why she always cherished what few friends she had. those who were important, they concluded her, completed her.

so why did he do it... jung seungjae. her words were motes hanging in the air when she called him up and asked why he suddenly couldn't talk to her anymore. a friendship isn't a friendship if someone can cut it off like a flyaway thread.

she stands on the roof of her building, beneath the kiss of spring time moonlight and a cool gray sky. he'd be here, right? he said he wanted to meet, and she believed him. despite the distance, despite their friendship that had dwindled away to nothing. no... she shouldn't doubt him now, it would be silly to do it only now, nam yerin.

when the door swings open, she spins around with a gaze that's strung between hopeful and already disappointed, waring sides of her heart. "you came." the colors of her heart mix on her face and she tells herself not to cry because it isn't that serious. so instead, she does the worst thing; she smiles gently. "you didn't forget the beer, right?" she squints, a very muted rendition of being playful and supercilious.

seungjae is no stranger to having loved and lost people; it’s something that he’s grown accustomed to in the industry, but that alone didn’t quite make it hurt any less. even more so when it had been yerin of all people, when he’d allowed management to get in the way of their friendship.

she’d once been someone he held close to his heart, and had, at one point, thought he’d never have to leave. but the industry, his image, management – everything had happened all too quickly, and soon enough they’d grown apart. friendship that he’d once cherished so firmly, melting into nothing.

he wonders briefly if the cameras will catch him here, walking towards yerin’s apartment complex. but it had been seungjae after all that had suggested them meeting up ( the same seungjae who years ago, listened to management the moment they told him to be wary. that nothing good would come out of flaunting his friendship with her ).

it’s april, but the weather’s a bitch. the cold air settles onto his skin; as though spring can’t quite decide if it’s here or not. seungjae finds it a little hilarious, in an odd way. “i said i would,” he says, but seungjae understands all too well why this might be news. he lets out a defeated smile, and lifts the plastic bag in his hand. “i got your favourites,” despite the years that have passed, seungjae remembers – the little details. “how…” he struggles to find the right words to say without sounding awkward, different. “… how have you been?”

If anyone had told Suran a month ago that her spur-of-the-moment cover of Little Light would get her noticed by Seungjae, she probably would've laughed. Small artists like Nymth didn't get that kind of attention, Suran had learned over the years, especially considering the cover hadn't really gone viral or anything of the like. And still, here she was, sitting in a chair next to Jung Seungjae himself, hands folded in her lap so she couldn't worry about what to do with them instead. (Or with her limbs, in general. Or herself.)

He was nice, that wasn't it. Suran wasn't uncomfortable as much as she was scared that she had somehow set herself up for something that she'd never be able to live up to. That, and now that she was here she was scared of losing it. The idea of it stung already.

But until she did she'd play along, do her best to make him not regret having called her here. Even if it meant playing Twenty Questions. Goodness gracious. Suran wasn't that exciting of a person ; for most of the part, being an idol meant living, breathing and dreaming rehearsals. How was she supposed to make him believe he hadn't just committed a mistake?

"That works for me," she replied instead and gave him a shy smile. Maybe if she didn't bother to fake enthusiasm and kept it subtle, he would simply misinterpret her reaction to the creeping impostor syndrome for her being naturally shy. "Though I have to warn you that I'm not super interesting. My idea of a nice evening is staying home with a book." Suran laughed softly, trying not to focus on how her voice sounded thin with anxiety. "I guess that's an answer already. Does it count if you haven't asked your question yet?"

seungjae doesn’t enjoy awkward situations – and while he isn’t a firm believer in mbtis, he’s pretty sure it’s the “e” in him. it’s not as though he’s gotten along amazingly well with everyone that he’s worked with, there were a few producers and people he’d butted heads with, but seungjae would at the very least like to have a good relationship with suran.

it’s a little hard not to be aware of the noticeable gap between them though, and seungjae can’t quite help but wonder if she’s nervous. it isn’t lost on him that he’s been in the industry for a while, and if seungjae was the one seated in front of a sunbae, he’d be crazily nervous too.

he makes a mental note to not be so uptight – though seungjae doubts he has much of that problem anyway; if anything his voice is always a little too loud and boisterous though, especially when he’s overly excited. but he tells himself to tone it down just a little to keep everything comfortable.

“oh! my idea of a nice evening is staying in with my phone. i’ve been really into mobile gaming lately,” he laughs. seungjae isn’t the most interesting guy out there either, at least he doesn’t think so. “i guess that makes it fair, right?” he smiles.

he pulls out the application on his phone, and as he awaits for it to generate a random question, he lifts his eyes to look at suran. “you can tell me if this feels too uncomfortable or old-fashioned, you know? i’m a bit of a boomer,” he jokes, hoping to ease the atmosphere between. but it’s true, despite their small age difference, seungjae feels himself taking on the role of an old man already.

“ah okay – here’s a question! what are the top three qualities you admire in others?” he reads out.

it’s going to be an incredibly busy time, with girl code’s comeback scheduled ahead. naturally, there’s a lot for raebin to do, being the head stylist entrusted with embodying the assigned concept into fashion pieces that will enhance the members’ features simultaneously. still, that doesn’t deter seungjae from insisting that raebin comes over for another sleepover, of all things. raebin did show up, in the end, perhaps needing a change of scenery to draw out more inspiration. it doesn’t change the fact that raebin was basically cornered into giving in though.

“this is basically kidnapping, just so you know,” raebin informs, eyes glued to his ipad as he makes some minor edits to the design that he had sketched out. “i told you i was busy, but you dragged me here with your persistence anyway. i could report you to a police officer,” raebin delivers coldly—but by this point, seungjae should know that all of raebin’s threats are empty.

he lifts his eyes from the screen for a moment, fixing seungjae with a dead stare, followed by the rolling of his eyes. “you do have a problem. do you always buy in bulk? you should at least add some variety to your purchases, get some other flavours. my hair isn’t even pink anymore,” he says, despite the proof being visibly obvious from seungjae’s point of view. “but i suppose… i’ll always be strawberry,” raebin relents with a sigh, returning his attention back to his ipad, poking the underside of his lip with its pen.

when seungjae points out the perfume he’s wearing, raebin simply nods. “you like it, don’t you?” it’s more of a rhetorical question, he doesn’t need an answer—raebin knows that seungjae does. “it’s one of the perfumes i often wear.” setting down his pen for a moment, raebin pinches the bridge of seungjae’s nose. “you really do have the nose of a dog, huh? you recognized it immediately. now sit there and behave, let me finish up my work.”

"you're strawberry to me," seungjae says, turning to look at raebin. he's more or less used to this now, the look raebin throws him every now and then, laced with annoyance and something that he can't quite place his finger on. but raebin doesn't hate it, raebin doesn't hate him, he thinks. and he's comfortable like this, he enjoys it. the both of them are in the same industry and yet, don't share the same job. while seungjae's always been thankful for the idol friends that he does have, raebin feels like a blast of fresh air – something familiar, yet all at the same time new. he enjoys it.

he reaches out to run his fingers through raebin's hair and laughs, pulling away before the boy can hit him ( he suspects that raebin might, anyway, knowing him ). "when we first met your hair was really pink! so you'll always be strawberry to me." he pauses for a moment, and tilts his head, "well you're my rose too," he adds – but he doesn't delve into it deeper. raebin had told him to be careful of how he spoke, what he said – seungjae doesn't quite understand why, when he'd only ever said the things he meant.

still, he blinks as raebin pinches the bridge of his nose, doesn't quite fight it off, he never really does. "isn't that just an excuse?" he asks, turning to face his friend. he rests his head against the couch, watching as raebin busies himself with the ipad. "you wore it for me, didn't you? because you were coming here today." it feels more like a statement than anything else; you wore this because of me, he almost says, but again, he doesn't, even though it's implied.

raebin knows how much seungjae likes his perfume, the scent that he couldn't quite find anyone else replicating. "are you trying to train me?" there's laughter in his voice though, but he understands how hard raebin is working; there's a comeback lined up soon, and raebin is well – raebin is good at his job.

it's almost interesting, how different their lines of work are, despite being in the same industry. again, it feels like a breath of fresh air, seungjae doesn't feel quite suffocated. it's freeing, almost. his eyes fall onto the ipad, and he watches as raebin works in silence for a while, unwilling to distract the boy.

"oh, pretty," he finds himself saying, "so much thought goes into styling," he adds, leaning in closer. their shoulders touch, but seungjae is careful not to get in the way of raebin's work. "it's like art in itself, isn't it?" his eyes don't drift away from the screen. "i've seen a bunch of musicians work on their music, but i think it's my first time seeing a stylist at work like this though," he turns to raebin, and smiles. "you're really cool, raebin."

he’s lost count of the amount of people he’s lost touch with throughout his time in the industry. nine years is a long time to be around, and in those nine years he’s seen big name musicians fall and small name musicians make their way to the top. during that period, he’s lost a good amount of friends too – people he’d used to talk to almost daily, and people he’d had more than just friendly relations with.

jules is one of them. while they’d been friends first ( and had gotten into a physical relationship later ), they’d still at the very least been able to maintain a level of friendship that seungjae quite enjoyed, and honestly, treasured. it was an arrangement that he’d always felt suited the both of them – after all, seungjae was never much of a ‘relationship’ guy. his hectic schedules never quite allowed for him to be one. this was good, that arrangement; the simple press of a button, or a quick text – worked well for him.

that was of course, until they’d been spotted years ago by a fan. and the rumours had been enough to make seungjae pump the breaks. his career, his image, and the comments made were something that urged for him to stop.

still, it would’ve been a lie if seungjae were to say that he didn’t miss her, or at the very least the friendship that the both of them shared. in truth, he does think of jules from time to time, the friendship that they’d both nurtured with one another, before everything had broken out.

so it comes as a surprise to him when he sees her here of all places, at a release party of a mutual friend. he struggles, just a bit, to get his bearings. it’s been years – years since he’s last attempted to make contact with her. surely by now, things would’ve died down, right? he decides to approach her, tapping her by the shoulder.

“jules?” he calls out, her name not foreign against his tongue. “hey! how are you?” he hopes at the very least, he doesn’t sound awkward.

by now, seungjae’s pretty sure that liv’s pretty familiar with his apartment. where the drinks are, the snacks, guest toiletries, and what not. despite living on his own, seungjae at the very least enjoys having a clean home.

so when liv arrives, seungjae knows he doesn’t need to take any sort of extra step to make the house ‘cozier’ than it is. set up any sort of mood. he knows very well what sort of arrangement this is. it’s one that works the best for both of them too. they’re good friends, which makes everything a lot more easier, and a lot less complicated. it’s the complications that come with these things that always mess with seungjae’s head anyway.

somehow, his schedule hasn’t been insanely packed. his usual filming for his show, and if anything, seungjae’s been busying himself with trying to find the perfect song for a comeback. so he thinks he needs this, some relief, some tension to get off his back. which is exactly why he’d asked liv if she was free to meet up.

and so here they were in his living room, bodies against the couch, as the air around them tensed. “liv – ah, liv! there… – yes!” yes! seungjae stands up, pumping his fist in the air. “haha, yes, i beat you again. that’s what? 2 out of 3? you really suck at mario kart,” he raises a brow, proud of himself for this ( somewhat small ) accomplishment.

sure, this hadn’t been his original intention when he’d invited her over. if anything what he’d envisioned involved a lot less nintendo switch, and a lot more warm bodies. but this is fine, if anything seungjae enjoys this quite a bit. “again, let’s go again. princess peach is honestly awesome, liv. she’s unbeatable, for real.”

sleepover – starter for @edenscent

he doesn’t really consider it kidnapping, or dragging raebin here against his will. especially if he’s in the comfort of his own home and raebin’s the one that’s showed up in front of his door. seungjae knows better than most people just how loud ( and in some cases, annoying ) he can be, but that’s never stopped him from approaching someone before.

raebin in this case is of no exception. their friendship had started off a little oddly – like cat and mouse, except there lacked any cat or mouse. and if anything, seungjae had referred to himself as a guard dog, and raebin, something like an owner. he’d been drawn from the start anyway; raebin’s demeanour and reactions more enjoyable than most.

he brings out the strawberry pocky he’d bought – specifically for raebin – and places it on the table. “i think the cashier thinks i have a problem. he asked me why i kept buying these,” he gestures to the snack, “i told him it was a treat,” seungjae laughs.

it might seem a little odd, just how close and how quickly seungjae found himself comfortable in raebin’s presence. there weren’t many instances where they could have worked together, and it wasn’t as though their paths would’ve crossed often either. and yet, somehow, seungjae enjoys the very fact that he feels so at ease, and genuine around the younger boy.

he takes a seat next to his friend, stretches out his legs, limbs longer than raebin's. his eyes fall onto his blue pyjamas and how they compliment raebin’s pink ones. as he leans closer to steal one of the pocky sticks, something catches his attention. “oh,” his eyes perk up and his nose twitches. “you’re wearing that again?”

he comes across it after being sent the link a few times. first from some fans, and then staff members that insist that this is one of the best covers that they’ve heard. seungjae is no stranger to people covering his music; it’s the sort of the thing that comes with the job. and while some covers are leaps and bounds insanely different quality than others, seungjae finds himself drawn to this one in particular.

it’s a cover of little light, a song that had gotten released in 2018 – almost 7 years ago, but it’s a song he holds close to his heart. this cover in particular somehow catches the essence of the song, and seungjae can’t help the way his eyes widen at the screen, and his ears perk up. “nymth’s anne”, he sees on the screen. i have to work with her.

seungjae had been the first to approach her – never having been much of an introvert before. plus, her voice, the essence that it captured, seungjae needs it – no, wants it – on a song. though, in truth, getting to know suran, hadn’t been as easy as it seemed ( despite his extroverted tendencies, seungjae still had his guard up, and he felt as though suran was the same. )

which is exactly how he’d found himself in this situation. seated next to suran in his studio as he held up his phone. “twenty questions… i think… this should be fine, right?” he asks, furrowing his brows at the random question generator app. “since it might be important for us to get to know each other… to work well…?” he at the very least hopes that this random spur of the moment plan works.
