Daiya fandom and Why I’m no longer providing raws
I’m Honey or HoneyHoneyChan.
If you guys are familiar with the Oshix3 scan group of Daiya no Ace fandom, you will notice that I have been providing a good portion of the raws.
I made the conscious decision to stop providing raws. But I don’t plan on quitting the Oshix3 group, nor do I want the Oshix3 team to stop providing content to English Daiya fans.
To give you an idea of how much love doujinka’s work and how I’m invested in the fandom:
Just this year, I bough around 150 doujin, with shopping service and shipping fees. I’m not going to give you guys an exact amount, but if you did any research on acquiring doujin, you will know how much I am invested in my fandom. At least monetarily.
First off, I am not familiar with the Japanese doujinshi circles nor how it works.
I came into the Daiya fandom around July 2014. It was a very small fandom, so I desperately looked for fan content which I know is a sentiment all fans have. I was already familiar with buying from Japanese sites and auctions before because I also collect Japanese fashion and figurines. A few months later, I started buying doujin off Toranoana and Kbooks.
When I saw a recruitment for the Oshix3 group, I jumped on the occasion. My sentiment was to share the doujin with the English fandom. However, in the process of doing so, I inadvertently hurt doujinka.
At first I justified it with the following:
I’m doing non -profit!
People who can’t aquire these books (money, ran out of print) get to see what doujinka have produced in Japan!
Doujinshi is technically illegal so we’re all playing in the grey area of the law.
We are going to promote doujinka who English fans haven’t even heard of!
English fandom is filled with scan groups! We’re just a sea of many
And on top of it, I got my group to agree to:
Crediting the doujinka and give links and instructions on their pixiv and how to buy their doujin.
No download links
Disabling the right click function to make it hard to save the content (which is easily bypassed as so many of you pointed out in anon)
A warning to not upload anywhere else
Take off any doujin that doujinka personally confront us about.
All this, I thought was miles ahead of other scan groups. Which Justified our activities.
In a mere 3 months (including our month of hiatus) We gained 1.5 k followers when usually I just see around 200 notes on popular English fandom Daiya fanart.
What tore at me the most is the attitude of fans I had help create.
You have broken my heart when I decided to wreck my own copy of Eyes on Me to scan and share. It was meant to be kept on Oshx3’s page exclusively. It went up on sharing sites almost immediately. We’re trying to resolve this issue but there has been 0 replies from the upload sites.
We have anons who complained our website isn’t easy for them to save stuff or hard to navigate. That’s because I DON’T TRUST YOU. I specifically requested that there would be warnings up and NO RIGHT CLICK before I became a provider for Oshix3. And now you have proven me right by uploading scans AND EVEN OUR WARNING TO NOT UPLOAD on sharing sites
That was the last bit of trust and confidence I have for the English tumblr fandom of Daiya.
Do you know why I am so concerned with re- uploading?
Justciel has a lengthy detailed post that explains how Publishers of original content TOLERATE doujinka: http://furuya.co/post/125413910427/more-asks-related-to-the-doujinshi-discussion
I am not pointing fingers at the wonderful people who have gave encouragements and thanks to Oshix3. Plus abided our rules.
I don’t want to penalize you.
I still want to be your friend/ ally and provide Japanese content.
But we need a drastically different approach because most of us understand so little how the Japanese Fandom works.
If the doujinka needs to take art down because of legal reasons or personal/professional reasons, they need to be able to control where their stuff is headed and know how many things are in circulation. Which I’d like to stress again from Justciel’s post.
My decision to ignore doujinka’s warnings about scanning, uploading and using their work under the guise of non-profit service to the Daiya English fandom totally destroyed any bridge we want to build with the Japanese fandom. We just left a lot of doujinka very upset and fearful.
English fans, please know this. There is a ton of free full smutty and fluffy comic strips available on the doujinka’s twitter and pixiv if you just try to look outside tumblr.
I want to make this work so that more content in English will be available to you.
For those anons who continue to complain that you SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT to see doujin because you can’t afford it,
Here is my answer to you:
Look up pre-orders and which shopping services buy R-18 doujin.
Spend my own money to buy the doujin
Pay a shopping service fee
Pay a Bank transfer fee
Pay Domestic within Japan shipping to my shopping service
Pay Shipping service to my home
Wait weeks for my doujin to arrive
Then destroy my doujins to scan them for you?
You are a complete stranger on tumblr who hasn’t tried building any sort of relationship with me.
It is extremely unrealistic and egoistical to demand at your leisure, to have every single piece of fanwork in any fandom, on YOUR DASH, at ANY TIME. Just because you follow tags on tumblr.
I thought this fandom could be trusted and I wanted to provide content that you wanted to see.
I’m not going to be stupid enough to be betrayed again on top of upsetting doujinka who may never find the motivation to produce fanart for my fandom again.
You can continue to consume other group’s scans. I can’t stop you.
My personal end goal is to have doujinka trust us enough to be easy to view text translation and maybe full content in English as long as we ASK.
I will answer questions too on my twitter and tumblr on why I decided to stop providing raws.
