i’m wondering why everyone is suddenly okay with streaming content that whitewashes an indigenous principal character… legitimate members of the Cherokee tribes already spoke out that Ian Ousley is not Cherokee.

“He has Cherokee blood!” Many Americans have indigenous American blood in them, that’s what happens when a people are forcibly assimilated and culturally genocided. If you do not see the issue with casting Ian Ousley to play an Indigenous character, then you fundamentally misunderstand the mechanisms of genocide.

“Well at least Ian Ousley has ties to Indigenous Americans! That’s a step up from the film!” You’re still missing the point. For one, we have no proof of Ousley’s ties to the Cherokee nations aside from his word. Secondly, the remake said they’d honor the diverse Indigenous and Asian heritages displayed in the show. By casting Ian Ousley they were not honoring anything, just checking boxes to say they tried!

The Water tribes were based off of Inuit people! Like even if they’d casted an actual Cherokee actor, they still would not bring Inuit culture and heritage to the role. Like you do realize that they casted a white person to play a brown character?? You do realize that when Ousley puts on the costume, he is cosplaying as an Inuit person right? That he has no ties to Inuit people? No sense of their hardships and struggles under the brutality of colonization, no sense of their efforts to preserve their culture? No sense of their actual culture??

Anyways, like i said have fun with white boy Sokka pt. 2.
