tw: parental death
✷ abandoned as an infant, much of emrys' origins remain shrouded in mystery. the woman whom he grew up to call mother ( despite not sharing any blood ) recollects how he was found wailing inconsolably right outside the fortress, taken in by perplexed staff members. as a maid to a lady of the court, she’d taken it upon herself to care for emrys when no one returned to claim him. little bat wings signified half-illyrian blood at the very least, his pointed ears also made him fae.
✷ he was a restless child, guided by his perpetual curiosity and eagerness to make headway. combat became the easiest outlet for uncontrolled emotions. while just a boy, he’d train alongside fierce warriors; provoking ( and often getting beat up by ) the older boys present. proving himself wasn’t an easy feat— his wings combined with a dubious lineage allowed for snide remarks and a healthy dose of mistrust. confusion and humiliation ignited deep-seated anger, though he still cried in his mother’s arms at night. she’d console him, run her fingers through his curls as she convinced him none of that mattered— that he’d do great things one day.
✷ losing her in a devastating accident almost a century later marked the abrupt ending of his boyhood. he was there with her, but he hadn’t been able to save her. he isolated himself in his chambers for weeks, until he could no longer scream or cry or feel anything but rage. emrys returned amongst the living looking gaunt like a ghost, though there was a flame flickering in his eyes. succeeding wasn’t merely a choice anymore; it was the sole manner in which he could commemorate the sacrifices his mother had made for him.
✷ if he wasn’t practicing combat he took up more tasks around the fortress. if he wasn’t working he’d go get intoxicated at the salamander lounge until body and mind went numb. a cycle which endlessly repeated as months turn into years, and years turn into centuries. anything to run from from the grief that’s been relentlessly haunting him, begging emrys to face it. he can’t, though— entirely mortified to acknowledge the void in his chest where his heart used to be.
✷ the position of commander was granted to him when his predecessor perished alongside fire’s previous high lord. emrys had been vying to become commander for over a century at that point, convinced his capabilities would lead the fire court to an era of triumph and victory. he’s certain he’ll make their army stronger than before— his neck on a tight leash, ready to obey whatever it is the high lord demands, as long as emrys is the one to bask in glory.

— for 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆
there was something so beautifully peaceful about the silence of death, but equally unsettling in that. and the longer leya sat beside the massive stone of a high lord who'd long since left their world, the more she felt capable of acknowledging the other side of life. her fingers delicately traced the words that had been carved into the stone and wondered what kinda of fae the man under had been.
the soft crunching underfoot was the only indication she had that she was no longer alone and the lady flicked away the tear that had spilled over as if it'd never happened. "i can leave to you some tiime alone," she told them as she rose to her feet and turned to greet them properly.
✷ “ fleeing the party so soon, my lady ? ” he’s mocking her, had seen her exit the gardens a while ago and foolishly trailed after her— abruptly dismissing one of his men mid-conversation with a simple flick of the hand. old habits die hard, and he still feels drawn to her presence like a moth to a flame. while emrys may no longer hold the title nor the honour of being her personal guard, he still made a vow to keep her safe.
he approaches her cautiously— as if she’s a skittish beast ready to bolt at any given moment. his gaze lingers, eyebrows knitting together as he picks up on glassy eyes. “ you knew him ? ” his nods towards the gravestone, reading a name he has no memory of. the headstone is quite imposing, however, leaving him to assume his legacy must’ve been just as impressive. “ i can give you two a moment longer— if you please. ”
