The 9 OF ROSES (coins), Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. While other saints have an epic biography, often punctuated by some kind martyr-making violent death, St. Thérèse's story was the opposite. She meditated on the beauty of nature, the inspiring magic of the smallest and most overlooked of flowers, her nickname is The Little Flower. In her memoirs from the early 1900's she wondered why small acts of kindness and self-moderation couldn't be just as impactful as grand ones? Why couldn't women occupy the same positions of spiritual leadership as men? ⁣ I grew up as Roman Catholic. I was an altar boy who had to listen to some priest talk about how sinful and evil it was to live a life as a homosexual. I felt shunned by the church itself, but there were these crazy band of freaks called saints, who seemed to endure a lot of pain and persecution for being different. I really identified with their outsiderness. ⁣ Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was a big deal in my childhood home. My grandmother prayed to her every day, and always kept an eye out for roses as a sign that St. Thérèse was listening, and hopefully answering her prayers. Yesterday I woke up to a wonderful email from tarot grandmaster extraordinaire Rachel Pollack, informing me that she was finally able to frame the print of the 3 OF BOTTLES I gave her a few months ago. The card shows Rachel and Eden Gray performing a tarot reading, receiving wisdom from the universe. ⁣ Rachel has been a huge inspiration and a mentor in my tarot and artistic journey. I really wouldn't have made this deck if I hadn't met her. She is a masterful, magical, powerful outsider who has touched so many lives. There was no question she needed to be represented in the Outsider Tarot, and I'm just honored that this card is hanging on her wall. ⁣ Here's what Rachel had to say on Facebook: ⁣ "Tarotist and artist Bobby Abate has created an original hand-drawn Tarot deck. Hi again! I took a much needed break from posting this last month, as I needed to be away from the computer for a while. I honestly felt like the 5 of Roses, just in need of restoration and to be physical after months of virtual work and zoom meetings. So what did I do? THE BILLOW OF LIGHTS (knight of wands/fire) is based on a fantastical self-portrait drawing I did about 20 years ago. I recently re-designed this card, adding a halo of color and light around the lightbulb lantern, and give the Billow a teal and orange suit. ⁣ I keep trying to re-connect with the fiery artistic energy I felt back then, I never stopped exploring and creating. These days, I often feel depleted of creative energy. I especially feel that way right now after finished a rather intense video editing job. MENTOR CARD SPREAD. A simple 3 card reading asking the tarot for a MENTOR to guide you through the next project, challenge or phase of life. This is one of my top go-to spreads, and I just did it for myself this morning as I'm about to finish one project and return focus on getting the Outsider Tarot into the world. ⁣ Method: Shuffle the cards . Divide the deck into three. Hover a hand over each stack. Feel which one radiates the most heat. Restack. ⁣ CARD 1 (center) : THE MENTOR. This is the card that will guide you through, to be reflected upon every day. Create a spread based on the layout this card to go deeper. Search the muse in the deck, note the surrounding cards. ⁣ CARD 2 (left) : The present situation where the MENTOR wants to do the most work, give the most advice. ⁣ CARD 3 (right): Where the Mentor wants to take you. ⁣ My mentor is the 6 OF LIGHTS (wands). This card is inspired by James Baldwin, taking a moment to enjoy the success of his writing. As this reading is about getting the Outsider Tarot into the world, I can't think of a better mentor than one that wants me to be done and celebrate. ⁣ The 3 of LIGHTS is the area of my life where I need the most help, braving the tightrope across a sea of fire while juggling. This is fearless forward movement without a destination or goal. My mentor can to help find the other side. ⁣ The destination is the 5 of BOTTLES (cups), the Diva, inspired by Nina Simone. I love this because I really want the Outsider Tarot to be part of the world during this moment of uprising, as we head toward the next election. The Hermit. This card has been coming to mind a lot lately, partly for the obvious reason of lockdowns and isolation, but the challenge this card presents is to learn how to work with nature and her cycles, to learn the names of trees and plants, birds and animals, to learn to cultivate and create with one’s own hands. ⁣ The other day, I passed an abandoned farm with dilapidated barn structures just as a sparrow landed on a post at the end of the driveway. 🦀CANCER SEASON 🦀 The 4 of Bottles is inspired by an outsider named Carlson Wade who wrote hundreds of alternative nutrition books from the solitude of his tiny Coney Island apartment from 1950-1990. To his professional contacts, Carlson was an introverted bookworm who worked around the clock, but to his two close friends he was known as LADY B cautiously living in the shadows of NYC gay underground during the Stonewall era, while Marcia P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were marching in the light. ⠀⠀ The 4 OF BOTTLES features one of Carlson's magical elixirs meant to calm anxiety & nerves, but the effects are only temporary. In the center of the card, the moon passes through all of its phases as the bottle empties. ⠀⠀ The 4 OF BOTTLES talks about what we do to temporarily quell symptoms of a much deeper issue.
