It's a game about fish. Not catching fish, since that's what Fleet is about. Wharfside is about going down to the docks to pick up fish that your fleet already caught, then taking those fish to the marketplace to fulfill contracts where businesses are looking for specific combinations of fish...unless you feel like paying them with more of the thing they didn't ask for instead which is equally fine... Dirigible Disaster is a fast-paced game from the mind of Daniel Grek that will be coming to Kickstarter soon. It will be published by Letiman Games.
We at Cards On The Table got our hands on it early in order to play test the game and give some ideas on ways to improve the game.
In Dirigible Disaster, players are trying to survive ten one-minute rounds where everything that can go wrong does on a doomed airship’s maiden voyage. Players try to solve these issues by rolling dice, using a system that makes it easier to resolve a specific problem when it comes up a lot, and more difficult when it is less frequent. Players have to make choices on which problems to try and take care of in what order, and the manic pace means they have to make those decisions quickly. (No one will be sitting around bored waiting for their turn.)
There’s no time to chat during the one minute round, but during setup for the round, when fire spreads and more calamities are added to the game board, you get a sense of camaraderie trying to figure out a strategy and a role for everyone to play in keeping the dirigible in the air just a little bit longer.
Industrial Waste is an older but still topically relevant economic board game about managing a factory and finding a way to maximize profits while also attempting to keep the waste byproducts of your manufacturing complex to a minimum in order to avoid costly environmental disasters. Join us as we experience the thrills and camaraderie of going on a legendary journey with Beowulf. Clarification: I think we misinterpreted the rules when calculating endgame scoring. According to my rules overview, a player only loses 5 fame per wound tile if they accumulated 3 or more wounds by the end of the game. Alternatively, if playing by "hardcore rules", a player just gets zero fame altogether if they have 3 wounds at the end of the game. We were playing by said hardcore rules, so since none of us accumulated 3 wounds, we should not have subtracted points from our scores. That being said, the way we interpreted scoring is probably the most interesting/challenging because it really puts pressure on the players when it comes to the decision of whether or not to take a risk. If I were to play this game again, I would still subtract 5 fame for every wound held at the end of the game AND insist that players need fewer than 3 wounds to win.
