Summary: Chrysanthemum and Kali get the surprise of their lives when they are called to the principals office one afternoon.
A/N: Hey guys I am back! long time no post I know, I was in a bit of a slump but I finally finished the first chapter of The Bus! this is where it all begins. Also Xelia, is now known as Kali for reasons. Enjoy!
May fifteenth started out like every other day. Chrysanthemum hit the snooze button twice before slowly getting out of bed; she daydreamed about impossible scenarios in the shower while listening to her favorite band, the Backstreet Boys. She skipped breakfast and took forever to decide what to wear, then headed out the door minutes before the bus came.
“Just another day at the prison they call school.” She thought to herself as she changed the song that was playing.
She only had a few precious minutes to listen to what she wanted to before her friend Tina got on the bus and hijacked one earbud and the song selection. As the bus approached Tina’s stop Chrysanthemum silently pleaded that she wouldn’t be at her stop, and her heart sank when she saw Tina standing at the end of her driveway waiting.
“Let me guess, Backstreet Boys?” Tina asked as she sat next to Chrysanthemum, taking the right earbud and placing it in her ear. Chrysanthemum just nodded meekly.
“It’s weird that you’re still hung up on them, you know. They aren’t even relevant anymore.” Tina said as she changed the song to a Fall Out Boy song.
Chrysanthemum just smiled and looked out the window. She didn’t dare argue with Tina or say that Backstreet Boys would always be relevant to her or that they had just come out with an album that year. She was somewhat relieved when they arrived at school, at least she would see Kali for a little bit before first period. Kali was the one person that not only understood her obsession with the boys but supported it and was a fan herself, thanks to Chrysanthemum showing her the old VHS of a concert.
In the middle of second period, a student office aide came in and handed the teacher a note. The teacher called Chrys up to her desk, handed Chrys the note, and told her to go to the office with all her stuff. Chrysanthemum was nervous, she never got called to the office. She wondered if she was in trouble and her heart was racing as she walked down the hallway.
About halfway to the office she heard someone say ‘Psssttt! Loser!’ behind her. She turned around to see Kali walking behind her with a yellow note in her hand.
“You get summoned to the office too?” Kali asked as she caught up to Chrys, a strange smile on her face.
Chrysanthemum smiled and nodded in response; she was stumped as to why they had been called to the office. For the remainder of the short walk, they both talked over things they could’ve done that would warrant a trip to the office.
“Age before beauty,” Kali said as she opened the door to the front office.
The receptionist was away from her desk so Chrysanthemum and Kali just took a seat and waited. When she returned they handed her their notes and she told them to sit and wait that someone would be with them shortly. A few minutes later the vice principal came out of her office. Both girls tensed up, this was serious.
“Please follow me outside girls.” The vice principal said with a smile. Chrysanthemum and Kali exchanged a confused look as they got up and followed the vice principal.
The front entrance of the school consisted of a series of glass doors, so when Chrysanthemum turned the corner at the end of the hallway she could see the tour bus parked in the circle drive where parents dropped their kids off. Confused, Chrysanthemum looked at her friend for answers. Kali just shrugged and smirked, but Chrys noticed something in Kali’s eyes that said she knew what was going on. It may have taken some time for Kali to open up, but after four years Chrysanthemum could read her best friend like a book. It wasn’t until they started to descend the massive staircase that Chrysanthemum saw the five men standing in front of the tour bus. This time it was Kali looking at her friend to see her reaction to who was at the bottom of the stairs. Chrysanthemum shook her head slowly in disbelief the rest of the way down the stairs.
“Hi, we’re the Backstreet Boys,” the five men all said in unison as the girls reached the bottom of the stairs.
“Oh… my… fuck!” Chrysanthemum shrieked, drawing her hands up to cover her mouth as the realization that this was really happening set in.
The band didn’t even flinch at the profanity, they were used to dealing with fans and their over the top behavior. Kali, however, was doubled over with laughter at her best friends reaction.
“Nice one, idjit!” Kali said, wiping the tears from her eyes from laughing so hard.
Chrysanthemum was still standing there with her hands over her mouth, wide-eyed, but Kali could see the sheer excitement in her best friend’s eyes as she listened to the vice principal explain the situation. Kali was beaming as well, but not just because of the five men standing in front of her. She really loved knowing she had a hand in seeing Chrysanthemum so happy.
“Our chariot awaits,” Kali said hooking her arm into Chrysanthemum’s and walking towards the open door on the tour bus after the vice principal had finished her spiel.
“Welcome to our humble abode on the road,” AJ said as the girls walked up the stairs into the tour bus.
After the band had showed the girls where they would be sleeping, Howie, Nick and Kevin sat on one of the couches in the living room portion of the bus, while Brian and AJ sat next to the girls on the couch on the opposite side of the room.
“I just wanted to say…that when I was depressed y'all did it – damnit – I mean y'all put me – damnit,” Chrysanthemum said, sounding flustered as she faced Brian on the couch.
“It’s OK, breathe,” Brian said calmly as he put his hands on her shoulders.
Chrysanthemum took a deep breath before attempting to continue, “When I was at my lowest your music and interviews got me through it; when I felt like I had no one I had y'all. Thank you for that.”
“Awww! Someone needs a hug!” AJ said motioning for Chrysanthemum to get up so he could hug her. When he did this the rest of the band and Kali also stood up as well and it turned into a group hug.
Chrysanthemum kept waiting for the surreal feeling of what was happening to stop, but as she sat on the couch and Brian handed her a cup of coffee, she still couldn’t believe that this would be her life and her home for the next two weeks. After getting the girls coffee, the band had gone the bedroom portion of the bus to take naps leaving the two girls on the couch.
“How in the fuck are you so calm?!” Chrysanthemum said turning to face Kali on the couch.
Kali shrugged, “I’m not the type to get freaked out around celebrities. Never have been. Plus I am the one who entered us in the contest – ”
“Wait, you what now?!” Chrys raised her eyebrows in shock.
“I saw the contest advertised a little while ago on some website, figured what are the odds and signed us up. I got the e-mail that we had won about a week ago, and I wanted to surprise you,” Kali said before taking a sip of her own coffee.
“Well mission accomplished, bitch. I was not expecting this at all when I got called to the office!” Chrysanthemum sank into the couch and smiled at her best friend.

No, being easily distracted by phones and media isn't fucking ADHD, do you know what the FUCK it is?
- living your whole life feeling like you're defective and broken
- feeling like a failure even if you try BEYOND your hardest and burn yourself out bc it's not enough to keep up with the Neurotypical pace of the world
- hating yourself for being literally, PHYSICALLY unable to do things - even things that you love! (*the last 20 minutes of one of my favourite movies glare at me in absolute fury from the corner*)
- being called a liar by your loved ones bc you didn't do something or forgot something or messed up anywho - "just do it, what's the problem! Just don't forget!"
- getting so angry about the dumbest thing you feel like you're physically about to explode, yet being unable to even express that anger bc you'll be yelled at or punished for it
- in regards of the previous point, also having the emotional regulation ability of a fucking cabbage
- having your abilities to function so inconsistent you don't fucking trust yourself anymore
- having to fight 25 bajillion mental barriers every day to do the SIMPLEST FUCKING ACTIONS
- getting SO STUCK in a deep hyperfocus on what the fuck ever which isn't what you have to do and panicking w each moment you cannot rip yourself out of it and do a productive thing
- not having a sense of time and either being late all the time or being WAY too early everywhere bc you got so fucked by your time blindness you're now getting everywhere way before you have to
- having ZERO self esteem. Fucking zero.
- being told to "suck it up" or "it's not that bad stop whining" when sensory stuff bother you, sometimes to the extent of being gaslit
- just fucking hating yourself for existing
-oh also being bullied and hated for your "weird obsessions" and having to hear stuff like "stop talking about [hyperfixation] no one cares!"
And the list go on and fucking on, I could keep it going forever. I'm so pissed off at this shit, and do NOT get me started on how poorly this fucking condition is named, 'attention deficit' is our smallest fucking problem
(Also, everyone's experience is different, I'm just talking about my personal experience - it's okay if you don't relate to it! It doesn't invalidate you as a Neurodivergent individual. Remember to take care of yourselves❤)
male gaze is not 'when person look sexy' or 'when misogynist make film'
death of the author is not 'miku wrote this'
I don't think you have to read either essay to grasp the basic concepts
death of the author means that once a work is complete, what the author believes it to mean is irrelevant to critical analysis of what's in the text. it means when analysing the meaning of a text you prioritise reader interpretation above author intention, and that an interpretation can hold valid meaning even if it's utterly unintentional on the part of the person who created the thing. it doesn't mean 'i can ignore that the person who made this is a bigot' - it may in fact often mean 'this piece of art holds a lot of bigoted meanings that the author probably wasn't intentionally trying to convey but did anyway, and it's worth addressing that on its own terms regardless of whether the author recognises it's there.' it's important to understand because most artists are not consciously and vocally aware of all the possible meanings of their art, and because art is communal and interpretive. and because what somebody thinks they mean, what you think somebody means, and what a text is saying to you are three entirely different things and it's important to be able to tell the difference.
male gaze is a cinematographic theory on how films construct subjectivity (ie who you identify with and who you look at). it argues that film language assumes that the watcher is a (cis straight white hegemonically normative) man, and treats men as relatable subjects and women as unknowable objects - men as people with interior lives and women as things to be looked at or interacted with but not related to. this includes sexual objectification and voyeurism, but it doesn't mean 'finding a lady sexy' or 'looking with a sexual lens', it means the ways in which visual languages strip women of interiority and encourage us to understand only men as relatable people. it's important to understand this because not all related gaze theories are sexual in nature and if you can't get a grip on male gaze beyond 'sexual imagery', you're really going to struggle with concepts of white or abled or cis subjectivities.
You don’t stop existing to your loved ones when they aren’t talking to you. It’s very likely they think of you when they see stuff that reminds them of you. Maybe it’s seeing that dog on the street and thinking you’d love it. Maybe it’s them getting to eat a hot dog and remembering that time you hung out all night and ate way too many of them. Maybe it’s them going to see a movie and thinking back on how the last time they saw one was with you.
It’s also likely they think about you and wonder how you’re doing.
I know it can be hard to remember but you do still exist and matter to people when you can’t see each other.
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)
I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head
hilariously, these are almost all in my fic tag. so, a compiled list from the notes (and some extras):
The God of Arepo (graphic novel 1 / 2 / 3) (ebook)
The Monster of Sentan
The Witch’s Cat
Raise Both Children
Stabby the Roomba (honorable mention)
Cinderella Marries the Prince (comic)
My Arch Nemesis Cynthia
Pirates and Mermaid
Eindred and the Witch
The Demon King
The Cornerwitch
Grandmother Beetroot
Apocalypse Daycare Worker
Grandmother Accidentally Summons a Demon
New Year Saga
A Story About Changelings
Ranger in the King’s Forest
The Difference Between a Hare and a Rabbit
Goblin Men (Canines)
I am in love with you /p
Thinking of starting a new food trend but pro-grains and carbs and such. Start worshipping bread again. Make some shrines to rice and pasta. Yell “blasphemy!” real loud when someone starts saying “grains contain anti-nutrients,” whatever that means. Begin some street sermons like, “what blessed our ancestors to get-eth through the long winter, turn our settlements to towns, and inspire the people to revolution. Who provides when all other foods go out. Who smells delicious as the yeast fuck-eth.”
Thinking of calling it the Free Bagel movement.
On a side note, modern sensibility often feels like it’s trending toward the depressingly sterile. No decadence of bread, no sex or attraction in our movies, no death mentioned in our video feeds, no aesthetic in our counterculture, no moral complications in our characters or flaws in our heroes.
It’s like the constant watchful eye of the Modern has given way to a Grass Lawn Culture:
Lawns are nature purged of sex and death.
We need like “unclench your jaw” posts but for eye strain. Like
Go look at something 20ft away for 20 seconds.
take off your glasses if you wear them for 20 seconds
Recommended by my optometrist
Look at something 20 feet away, then 10, then 5, then one, then if you can your nose.
Repeat twice, then again without glasses.
Face forward look out of the corner of your eye. As far as you can look. Slowly move to the other corner. Repeat twice.
Look down as far as you can. Slowly look up. Repeat twice.
Roll eyes twice.
Close eyes for five minutes.
I do this every day usually at my halfway point. My migraines went away. My vision go better. Honestly stretching my eyes as she put it feels great too.
Fiction is disappointing in its portrayal of…people’s weirdness. Just how weird people really are in real life.
So many books have all their characters be incredibly normal and I’m like ????? You guys can go outside and not run into someone who is even slightly strange? Or act like “quirks” are only for characters who are explicitly supposed to be eccentric instead of just…people being people.
like, my neighbor sunbathes in his driveway in his underwear and builds coffins in his spare time. My OTHER neighbor just sets things on fire whenever he needs to relax so at random times he’ll be out burning his deck furniture or something. I knew a guy in high school who woke up every morning at 3am and could lip sync flawlessly to every veggietales song. I knew a girl who collected hand sanitizer and wore bright, glittery green eyesore alligator earrings after she got her ears pierced. our family friend back in Tennessee owns six pugs and an unbridled pug obsession. My brother (13) aspires to be a hobo and calls himself Moped the Cheapskate. My grandma reads ya novels (she loved six of crows btw), determined that she was a ravenclaw through the internet, is responsible for me learning my first curse word, and flips off trump when she’s watching him on TV. one of my high school friends was a conspiracy theorist who did intense research about chemtrails. a member of my squad when I was like 14 was referred to by us only as Poodle. the guy who taught my public speaking class in high school moderated a doomsday prepper forum and would talk wistfully about how he would like a bunker. I used to work out with a guy who worshiped Thor smack dab in the middle of the Bible Belt. today my best friend literally just ate dirt while we were hanging out and I can only be just like “whatever, he eats leaves, the little packets that say do not eat, and food off the floor of restaurants, how could a little dirt hurt him?” because that’s just what he does he just…eats things
The sad thing is that almost everyone I know would be The Weird One if they were part of the cast of a book?? But it isnt weird to be weird or eccentric or the opposite of normal. people are just…that way. books drop any somewhat unusual quality as a marker that a person is “eccentric” and I promise you can’t make your characters too weird
Because I write down people that I meet and hear of: my dad met a lady at his work who claimed to be psychic and talked at length about how ghosts would watch her shower (“I hope you like what you’re seeing!” she would tell them) and about the ghost-seeing party she was planning. He talked to a woman who was a sonographer and who had an enormous tattoo of a dragon all the way up her leg and thigh. “Organs move. Babies don’t,” was her wisdom. He met a guy with a phobia of glitter. People are weird. There’s no excuse to make stock characters and people who are average and without quirks. To me it just makes them seem undeveloped because EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING.
People are just weird. let them be weird pls
