I imagine that sometime after hollanov being outed, Shane is going to be caught making heart eyes at Ilya while ilya is playing hockey.

Some random hockey player will of course notice this, and be all “omg does Ilya being good at hockey turn you on?” Shane (at least in my hopes and dreams) will respond affirmatively. Naturally (not at all naturally) Random Hockey Player (copyright me) will then respond with a scandalized “hold up, this whole time you’ve been attracted to us?” *points to rest of hockey team that has magically appeared around them since I started thinking of this*. At this point, Shane looks this dude right in the eyes and says “you said good at hockey, not plays hockey”

It is at this point that Ilya will jump out from hiding with a sound effect machine and press the badum tss button. (No, I don’t know why he was hiding. None of this was planned.)

And they all (not Random hockey dude) live happily ever after.

I think I have a lot in common with my therapist. In other words, I fear that one day im going to come across them on ao3/tumblr.

If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention lately…

Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.

Including (sigh) the em dash.

There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.

A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.

No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.

You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.

Defend the em dash.

I don’t think I was ever taught how to use em dashes, but I still really like them and try to use them. I’d like to see ai use an em dashes in about twenty different ways, panic over whether or not they were used correctly, call my mom to ask her if I’m using it correctly, realize that I was not using it correctly, and then delete everything I wrote.

AI can’t stress like I can :)

Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to use em dashes in my fanfics. Fingers crossed.

About five minutes ago, I thought ao3 was down. It was a horrible two minutes. I contemplated learning coding or whatever it is so I could lend a helping hand. I didn’t like the quiet. It let me think, which is never good.

Anyway, turns out it wasn’t ao3, but my WiFi. Thank god for data. The world isn’t ending after all!
