Day #1 Wollongong to Bulahdelah-

After a stressful week of fiddling around with the caravan to get it ready for our trip, the day had finally arrived! We left later than we had planned and in our anticipation to be far from the Illawarra we forgot Mat’s medication. Our first rookie mistake. Once we had the meds we drove some way with the caravan door open. Our first stop was the “BIG” Ayers Rock- a great excuse to stretch the legs, snap a selfie and feed a tired and cranky Zepplin. In our usual fashion we turned up at dark at Bulahdelah Bowling Club. We snagged ourselves a tidy unpowered site and settled in for some dinner.

The beginning

Since we met we have always dreamed of hitting the road. In the early days it was talk of attaching our camper trailer to the Jeep Wrangler. Chucking the dog, Boss in the back and leaving our humble miners cottage in Kembla Heights to become gypsies. We would fantasise about an easier life, void of stresses and the demands of having to work for a living. To be wholly self-sufficient. From first romanticising of a new life to making it a reality- a lot has changed! We found out we were expecting a little bundle of joy, Zepplin, who is now a 12 week old full of laughter and love. Unfortunately the excitement of expecting our first baby together was soon slightly overshadowed by the news that Mat had a tumour on his pancreas. Seven long months later, Mat underwent major surgery to have the liaison removed. The ability to travel seemed impossible in the face of a newborn baby and Mat’s long road to recovery. Instead of going stir crazy in the same four walls, we decided to make a change. We sold a lot of possessions, upgraded the camper trailer to a 16 ft caravan and set ourselves a small budget. We couldn’t start our adventure quick enough! Traded the 2 door Wrangler for the family-friendly Grand Cherokee and set off like bats outta hell, Mat only 6weeks post-op. The plan is simple, 10weeks to go from Wollongong to Bundaberg and back. If Sarah can find work along the way, we hope to extend our travels to see more of Australia. We have begun travelling north up the east coast and as any tourist does, stopping to see as many ‘BIG’ things as possible. This is our little slice of internet to chronicle our adventure and to prove to ourselves and maybe others that anything is possible if you want it enough.
