In a world of instant gratification, requesting materials from the library is a pleasantly slow experience to me.
I want to read this book, I want to watch this movie. I don't need to right now, though. Just sometime. There are 0 copies available and 4 people ahead of me in line. I place a hold anyway. Weeks, maybe months later, I've all but forgotten I placed any request in the first place when suddenly, surprise! Your book is ready! You get to read a book! What a beautiful surprise! Or maybe I didn't forget I had a hold placed, maybe I've been looking forward to this book for weeks, eagerly checking the status in my library portal like a kid waiting to open Christmas presents, and now, finally, it's ready!! It's time!!!
Often I place several holds at once, and sometimes they trickle in steadily, and sometimes they fall on me all at once like a waterfall. I don't want to be selfish by keeping things for too long, so I actually sit down and read these books, too, rather than letting them collect dust unread on the shelf. And I hear about more books or movies that sound interesting, and so I place more holds, and when I come in to the library to pick up the new materials or return old ones, I may as well browse while I'm there, y'know? And so the rhythm of checkout-return continues, this peaceful ebb and flow continually bringing me new stories to enjoy.
I love you, library. Your emails telling me my holds are ready for pickup are perhaps the only emails that do indeed find me well.
hello!! In bitknot, I've picked up on a critique of capitalism, materialism, and greed. How do you reconcile with capitalism as an artist? I think many working artists dream of supporting themselves through their art. Is this the path you hope for, and if so, how have you protected your creativity (and peace of mind) from being driven by sales, audience expectations, or pressure to produce constantly? How do you stay creatively true to yourself without commodifying your feelings/ lived experiences?
I've read that One-Dimensional Man has been very inspiring for you creatively and I wanted to pick your brain.
keep up the good work, you rock. xxxx

thank you! this is very sweet and thoughtful. i can't say i have found a magic pattern or solution to keep my creative integrity and inspiration afloat while also commodifying myself as part of a touring act. i will say though, i fully allow it to always be an extension of my own performance art and i like to collect as much as i can on the road to create a little hoard of evidence that this all really happened. i do stay off instagram personally, which is incredible for my mental health and productivity. this was a challenge that led me to work with an artist friend dimwit who coded my neocities website theasheleycatacombs.com ! which i will be using as the main hub for my industrial designer warehouse.
i think there's an irony to bitknot, but mainly it's extremely heartfelt. i wanted to make girl to girl songs and explore the concepts that inspired my visual art, like repressive desublimation and para-social relationships. i have been facing my own role in the exploitation of my experiences and what it means to mechanically reproduce private moments captured in lyrics and songs.... and how to retain dignity and preciousness when handling what we make how we share it. process is just as important as product, and that applies on a minute scale like with the crafting of a song to a grand scale like how was your iphone made.

adventuring in northern mn
i hold my gloves to my face
as the wind numbs your lips and cheeks
we can barely move through the falling snow.
my hand in your pocket
your hand in my hair
i wish it was still freezing.
breaking the ice over top of the pond
i dared you to jump in,
you laughed in my face
and i’d never felt so loved.
now i see you when my eyes are half closed
in the sun as it gets warmer
you hold my face and your lips graze mine
i wish it was still freezing.
