of course it had to be higgs who rose from the dead to show sam in bloody detail what he was doing wrong as a parent. of course it had to be the abused boy who was trapped with his father, forcibly isolated from the rest of the world in the name of keeping him safe.

in all things higgs represents a road not taken, the alarming proximity of ugly choices and consequences. he exists in ds2 as both the abusive father and the abused child - he is the shadow self of both sam and lou. he attempts to establish violent control and ownership over lou, and he wears her birthmark on his arm.

there is a reason the game ends not with sam and lou reuniting, but instead with lou alone. independent. an adult woman who proudly carries parts of her parents, but exists as an empowered, separate being.
