for the ballroom competition you have different style of routines choreographed- cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, jive. each has a specific technique and different beat of music you have to adapt to. For example- cha cha beats/counts are different than samba beats and technique, etc.

Does the ballroom competition involve a solo? Because if so, it is 4 solos a dancer could potentially be doing. Or is it a combo they learn and have to compete? Or they all just improv?

well it’s usually a choreographed piece they adapt for music. at least for the younger ones

Kaos does not (and never had) a title competition, rather their dancers do the cast experience and from there they pick 10 dancers to be a part of the Kaos Cast- those are the assistants for the following season.

oh my goodness i can’t get over how happy the all star mini top 6 has made me. ASPEN!!!!! LILY!! EMMA!!!! CHLOE!! BLAKELY!?!?!!!! EMERSON?!!!!!?!!!! all are so freaking deserving and talented

I think the problem with how the top 3 were selected is the improv round many did the tricks they would at a TDA dance off, instead of staying true to ballroom and the technique related to it. Since this is primarily ballroom they should have selected the kids that stayed true to this dance style and not just did a bunch of tricks etc that are not typically seen in ballroom dancing. Or they should have considered having them dance various Latin ballroom styles cha cha, jive etc. then see how well they improv to those styles.

but all star is not strictly ballroom, they did a solo in any style and then the audition was jazz contemporary and ballroom

I was at the ballroom competition. I can confirm that the anons are correct. Stella and Lucia did not originally make top 6. They stopped the comp and then added them in and kicked out two dancers. Then for awards, they did a top 8.

Madisyn also wasn’t called for top 20 in her solo. Then they called her as top 6 and she had to run in from the crowd. It’s just a huge mess.

I just heard that the top 3 for All Star to recompete their solos were chosen in each age group only from their improv. That doesn’t make sense at all. You are choosing the dancers that you want to assist and travel with you from a 20 second improv? I have issues with just about every nationals but at least they all add improv into the total score and don’t judge it separately. It was 20 seconds that determined their fate. I feel bad for those dancers. This ovation thing has kind of turned into a huge joke. And don’t get me started on what happened with the juniors in the ballroom competition.

can anyone who was there confirm there was a mix up with the juniors? i dont doubt that it happened. but i feel like that’s a fair way to get to the top 3, no? a huge part of ballroom is adapting to the music

I heard Stars travel team is not allowed to go to TDA Orlando because it’s not fair for them to compete against the stars kids that live in Miami and train there everyday. I think that’s why Madisyn is going to Vegas.

What does a ballroom competition look like? The dancers have a prepared piece, right? In the videos, it kind of looks like they’re all doing improv, but surely you don’t buy a $1000 dress and do all the hair and makeup just to improv (?)

you don’t know the song but most have a prepared piece. you just adapt to the song as you go
