viktor nation, how we feelin
And I guess I'll just miss her
Even though she isn't even really gone
But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off
Arcane really was just like, the love was there and it changed everything.
Op how dare you leave this in the tags
i think the reason why i can’t bring myself to say season 2 is bad is because fortiche just always does such an amazing job. they put so much effort and care into every fucking shot of the show. they also do a lot of character work in gestures, expressions and interactions.
plus season 1 made me so invested in these characters. i love them so dearly. i can’t let go of them because of some bad writing.
but ultimately the writing of season 2 is poor. the focus of the show is lost. monumental character moments are left to 3 seconds of dialogue per character. vi was sidelined. the ending is too openended. and i can understand wanting to leave something to visual storytelling, but that can only go so far to me.
just TODAY. i saw someone say caitlyn gave up her houses’ seat on the council to sevika. TODAY. that’s a major plot point to caitlyn’s character and to the piltover/zaun conflict. and we just noticed that. on one hand it’s cool that so many details are still being unearthed, but shouldn’t that be a bigger thing? especially for caitlyn’s arc?? just a bit disappointing.
okay now thinking about vi in the wake of jinx’s death finally working out who she is and wants to become.
vi saying to vander, “i grew up knowing i was less than them, that my place was down here, i want powder to have more than that” still is something so fundamental. it’s why she has such an aversion to the role of an enforcer. it’s why she fought so hard to earn money and fight as a kid. i think it would be very fitting if she finally learned that punching first isn’t always the answer. we saw she resorts to it in at her worst in the pitfighter montage. taking vander’s words to heart finally after all this time i think is what she needs. her personality doesn’t have to change, she can still be straightforward, brash, and determined. why not repurpose her motive to fight for change in the undercity.
wouldn’t it be so poetic if vi took a similar role of vander, community building and communicating on zaun’s behalf? renewing her purpose in community rather than just family which is now obviously taken from her. she doesn’t even have to be on the council or in a big position. just learning from ekko and working with caitlyn to achieve goals for zaun. to achieve equity and opportunity to zaunites and specifically a better world for the next generation. especially if caitlyn uses her name and power to push for reform, finally their arcs would be complete.
they had the perfect vehicle for this with isha if vi were to really bond with her and renewing that sense of purpose to her city. we see her yell at cait for almost killing her, that could have been a big character moment for vi. but of course isha had other narrative significance unfortunately.
maybe this is too sunshine and rainbows but hey i want good things for vi man please.
caitvi s2 rant w/ spoilers
i LOVE caitvi, like seriously. they’re probably my favorite ship of all time.
but watching act 3 for the first time, i felt as though JAYCE and VIKTOR’s FANON ROMANCE had more depth and attention than the LITERAL CANON LESBIANS.
i’m so grateful for caitvi’s sex scene, kiss scene, and endgame confirmation, but to be quite frank, their payoff doesn’t fully land. which is honestly so devastating. it all plays into how the piltover/zaun conflict was completely brushed over, therefore their representations in the narrative do not get afforded the depth they needed.
because caitlyn and vi had more to them than their relationship to jinx. with caitlyn consistently in positions of power, we never end up seeing her weaponize that power for the people she claimed to care about in season 1. “the undercity needs healing” was so powerful because caitlyn had the moral compass piltover didn’t. yes, she becomes blinded by rage and grief after receiving an ounce of trauma from zaun that piltover reapplies tenfold. but she’s supposed to COME BACK from that. we see her push back against ambessa which is valuable to her character, but she is still the figurehead to ambessa’s warmongering. we get the small acknowledgment of it via caitlyn, but despite losing an eye for her crimes, nothing is done to remedy her actions. she makes it up to vi by using her power to aid in her prison break, that’s all. if caitlyn can withhold kiramman funding to make vi a enforcer, she has so much money and power to change the course of zaun’s treatment.
also, i found the “what are you shooting for” line to be so key to caitlyn’s character in season 1 and they NEVER call back to that. do they even properly answer that question in her character? i would have loved a callback to grayson for caitlyn to wake up from her commander nightmare. because she was a person in a position of power who, while not always perfect, cooperated and worked with vander behind closed doors. she understood the value in achieving communication. caitlyn never wields her power to help in season 2 but i felt as though the caitlyn we knew in season 1 would at least find her way even after everything that happened. or vi would be there to remind her. but alas, nothing.
vi was a vehicle in season 1 to address zaun in the eyes of piltover. she is the bridge between with her really knowing it, she has other personal goals in that moment. as time goes on, we never see her grapple with the weight of becoming an enforcer. we see her use her leverage with caitlyn to become a voice for zaun at the table in one small moment. but largely, vi just becomes complicit in caitlyn’s grief-stricken rage, losing most of her personal agency. there is NOTHING about vi dealing with this, which is such a shame.
this really could have informed a ending for both caitlyn and vi where they assume positions of power that focus on proper communication and peacemaking legislation for piltover and zaun. caitlyn could have lead enforcer reform to protect the undercity. caitlyn using her mother’s insight via the key to make informed decisions. or vi becomes a community builder in zaun working with ekko to create better lives for their citizens. idk even something cliche is better than not acknowledging anything at all. them helping to remedy the piltover/zaun conflict helps tie their narrative from season 1.
yeah caitvi get to live a happy, quiet life together in a huge mansion but at what cost. after all of the loss and pain vi has been through. vi fully disconnected from her family and everything she’s ever known. they don’t even confirm if they stay as enforcers moving forward. who takes the kiramman seat at the council? none of these questions are resolved. very very sad to me.
while it’s too bad we haven’t seen vi’s personality breakdown and much needed conversations on screen, this ending is literally THE beginning for her and caitlyn’s relationship and vi’s overall healing. i believe cait asking vi if she’s still in a fight directly implicates that both of them are very much aware that after all they’ve been through their road to a healthy partnership is going to be rather bumpy (and full of unresolved grief and trauma), but vi’s response just solidifies her willingness to walk it anyway. and if you think about it for a minute, this is actually one of the first times where vi decides what's best for her and her only
look i know that arcane season 2 has a few issues, i WISH there was time to explore this incredible story they're telling.
but caitvi are my favorite lesbians ever and i'm literally so glad they exist and i am rooting for them to reconcile and remain endgame and honestly no fast pacing or montages or overuse of music will make me hate the show tbh.
