SHEPARD WAITED, AND HE SCOURED THE WALL of thick greenery before him with keen eyes — watching the spot from which he thought the voice emanated and searching for any a hint of movement or life within. but his guess was slightly off, he realised as he caught a flash of deep blue above, right on the upper edge of his vision. his head snapped up and, on instinct, he shifted backwards, the slight relocation tactical in nature rather than at all fearful. though shepard hadn't needed to move at all; he had barely glanced up when the shape sprung into motion, plummeting from its perch to the ground before shepard with a fluid, calculated grace. the man (?) before him straightened to full height, towering before him: all lean muscle, most certainly alien but rather humanoid ( with the striking thinness and the limberness of a salarian, but with all the sharpness and sleek verticality of a turian ), the now visible streaks of lighter colouration rippling throughout azure skin. with perhaps less thought than he should have given to the decision, shepard holstered his weapon, lowering his hands to his side. he let a moment of quiet pass, allowing the dirt and the dust set airborne by the stranger's entrance to settle and for his silent inspection of the massacre to finish, before taking two paces forward: an indication of his ( relative ) harmlessness and an invitation to be, too, observed.
" that obvious? " shepard asked with a quirk of the lip, feeling quite comically small; with even their slightly closed distance, he had to crane his head further upwards to meet the bright and equally inquisitive gaze. no humans on pandora, then, or else nothing exactly like shepard.
it took him a moment to realise that his translator hadn't been set off, and that he'd still understood. " you speak english, " shepard said, tilting his head in mild surprise. without permanent human colonies or populations established on pandora, that was even more curious. he wasn't so educated on the history of pandora, beyond a quick skim of the weather conditions, the native flora and fauna, and minimal detail of the native populations in the little time they'd had to prepare between hackett's urgent request and their quick arrival. but given the alliance presence here — and the presence of the rda, too, an organisation that thus far seemed largely human — maybe knowledge of english wasn't all that unusual. still...
" i haven't met many non-humans that speak earth languages. mostly common trade language, at best. " any alien knowledge of english, with the far reaching availability of translation technologies, was unusual and impressive. quiet admiration gave quick way to a curt nod in acknowledgement of the question that followed.
" i'm commander shepard, formerly of the systems alliance. i got word from old colleagues that alliance squadrons have gone missing in the area. i'm here to investigate ... hopefully to bring them home. " a hope that he was beginning to realise might have little basis in reality, given the overwhelming readiness of the armed forces that had swarmed shepard.
he picked through his memory for debriefing he'd had on pandora shortly before deploying planet-side. " you're — na'vi. " he paused, waiting for ascertainment or clarification.
" ... i haven't been on pandora before. alliance work kept me in other parts of the galaxy — haven't personally come across any pandora natives throughout the galaxy, either. " he thought he might have heard mention of the moon and its people tossed about in one embassy or another on the presidium, two years ago when his mission required considerably more dealings with ambassadors. ( and when he had the time and the willingness to entertain the occasional politician seeking favours: for a little help from a well-supplied and heavily-armed third party that didn't mind a little dirty work for a small share of the profit. ) but, generally, the majority of the embassies' background talk flew over his head.
shepard turned, pointing at the soldiers sprawled across the forest floor behind them. " the rda. what can you tell me about them? "
