“Yeah, but… ah never mind.” He shook his head, smiling at her. “If you say I’m good, then I’m good. You would know I bet.” He ruffled his own hair, checking around them, sniffing the air experimentally. “I guess, I just never really thought too much about it. I mean, it was always a bit more about food and such.”

It was true, Mako certainly hung around the gangs but now he was with Korra, and if Korra the Avatar was a good person, then surely that meant Mako was too. And he hadn’t done as much bad as Mako…so. “You know what, I think you’re right. Oh hey look, the boat’s just getting in!” He pointed with his hand, down at the docks, where a simple large ferry was putting down its gangplanks, people gathered at its side.

Her lips quirked into a smile. Good. It worked. At least her little pep talk could work on someone else even if it was useless on herself. Ah, such was the problem of leading a double life.

Looking over as they pulled in Aquene gave a small grin. “Any place on the island you want to see first, Pabu? Or just meander about aimlessly?”

He couldn't help but flash a grin back at her smile, not knowing what she was thinking behind it. Even if he had been curious, her next question would have distracted him as he rocked back on his heels, thinking on it.

"Well, there's the statue of Aang, alot of people go and either get themselves drawn or have a picture taken at the foot of it,. The pictures are expensive though.I know there's a few stands mostly ran by the Air Nomads where they sell some desserts and a few Air nomads wandering around to talk about the wisdom of Aang." Here, he rolled his eyes, having never much use for wisdome from a dead guy."And I think there's a few other stands from people who set up shop, that's usually on the backside of the island though, I think they're really not supposed to be here. Don't know why...we should go there first!"

He grinned sheepisly at his outburst, ruffling his own hair. "Err, well, you can choose, I like any of it personally."

He nodded to her, already going around and peeking at the supplies. “Okay, guess I can wait for you. Just a few minutes though or else I’m gone.” He grinned as he teased, finishing his own tea and stacking the cup with hers. The mere fact that she said not to peek made him curiouser then anything else, his hand itching. If it had been anyone but Aquene, he might have done it too. But he liked her, respected her. It would be wrong of him to do so, and even with his confusion with human morality, that made sense to him.

Still, his eyes kept flickering to the cloth covered easel, before he would practically wrench his head away to resist the temptation. He had done one of those when she came back out, nearly stumbling over his feet, though he recovered as well as he could. A sheepish smile was given, a quick cough. “Yep, ready, let’s go.” He did not just trip up in front of her, did he? How much more embarrassing could he be?

Aquene gave a quiet laugh once she made sure he was alright. “You said you’ve been to the island before, right?” she asked, leading the way out of the apartment and clinic. “Do you go there often?” She locked up and double checked the door before putting the key in her satchel. The bag itself was strapped on snugly.

“Yeah I’ve been there a few times.” One last glance cast to the easel in the corner before and he follows her out, his own hands empty. “But no, don’t go there too often. I mean, I guess Avatar Aang is nice, but he hasn’t done anything to help me, and it seems a little silly to give him a statue when plenty of other people do good stuff. Where’s their statue?” He doesn’t think that much about what he’s saying, having little concept of history and war at this point of his life, but it’s always puzzled him why the past Avatar got statues and praise even after his death when other people did good. It wasn’t unfair necessarily, just strange.

Aquene gave a small shrug as she thought the question over. “Well, if everyone in history that did something good or amazing got a statue I think we would run out of room here.” She gave a quiet laugh. “And think about it, only people on the winning sides of the wars ever really got statues. After all, the ‘winners’ are made out to be the ‘good guys’ even if they weren’t really.”

To be honest, Aquene thought Amon deserved a statue, but she’d never voice that aloud. Maybe she could try to make one, but the painting would suffice. Even if it was all from her imagination.

“I guess so.” He didn’t know that much history, just what people liked to talk about. So he knew about the various avatars, kinda, mostly the big ones, like that Kyoshi crazy one and Avatar Aang of course. Then a few of the memorable people like Yue and Katara and the like. But really, now that he thought about it, he didn’t know that many people or wars. Drawback to his new life he supposed. He didn’t grow up like most. 

“Really? But I mean, that’s cause the other side is bad, right? I mean, they wouldn’t have lost if they were the good guys. Good always wins over evil, right?”

He rubbed the back of his neck even as he kept walking, trying to puzzle it out based on what he knew and understood. Avatar Aang ended the war, so he was good. Fire Lord Zuko was bad but the avatar made him good. Mako was good and Bolin was good..except for the business with the triads. And then, what was he? Good or bad? He didn’t think he was bad, but he did bad things like stealing, and he stopped walking, whirling around to face Aquene. “Am I bad?”

Ah, naivete. How nice it must be, she mused. No need to try to give him a history lesson, she supposed.

At the last question she blinked several times. Bad? Her brows drew up as she studied the red head, a small frown on her lips. “Well, I can’t say for certain,” she finally answered, “as I don’t know you quite well enough, but from what I can tell you are a good person.”

The frown turned into a small smile. “You helped me out when I was lost, kept me company in the zoo, and now we’re having another outing.” Aquene adjusted the strap on her satchel before stretching a little. “I think that you questioning yourself like that shows that you are a good person.”

Aquene herself never asked that question because she already knew the answer. Her hands were too far stained with blood for her to ever be a good person, but days like this, friends like Pabu made it feel as if she could redeem herself.

Pabu thankfully hadn’t heard or else he would have been as red as his hair. Instead he busied himself by picking through the jewelry, checking for any sort of security and then putting it down. Maybe another time, but it was always risky to shoplift from a store. Much better just slipping into one of those wealthy homes and taking a few pieces that they probably didn’t even miss. So his back had been turned as Brianna first stepped out, the shopgirl’s quiet cough turning him around. “What’s wron…wow…uh…that looks pretty on you Bri. You should get it.” He kept mentally slapping himself, even as he felt his face grow hot. He did not have a crush on his friend, he was not crushing on his friend and thinking she was pretty..was he?

“You think so ?” She said looking down at herself “It isn’t too much ? I’ve never done this before … i’m not sure what i’m supposed to think …” She pouted a little, looking down at herself. The dress was short and slightly tight… weren’t they going dancing ? Wouldn’t the dress bu uncomfortable if she was supposed to dance ? She didn’t know but Pabu said it looked nice so it would be alright … Wait … Pabu had said she looked nice. A light smaile made it’s way across her lips as realization hit her. Why was she so pleased ? Pabu always told her she was cute and pretty as a child, but this felt different … why though, Bri couldn’t figure out.

“Well i guess it ‘makes my eyes pop’” She quoted the shopgirl smiling a bit more. This could work out. The dress was a good fit, so what ! She looked nice and that’s what mattered. “But i’m so paying you back after i get my first paycheck.”

“Yeah it does. Although, I’m in trouble, because I’m pretty sure Mako doesn’t have anything this colored.” He joked with her, pointing to his own golden amber eyes. But really, the joke was to establish them back on the same playing field they had been on before, not this awkward sort of flirting that he was not doing with someone who was a child, really. Just because the Spirit world was up to it’s tricks again, didn’t mean he should take advantage of it.

Her smile at his compliment made him smile sweetly back, a rare one for him, and he quickly covered it with a cough and a laugh. “Don’t pay me back. Consider it a gift.In fact, I want you to stay over here while I pay for it, so you can’t even know how much it is.” He folded his arms, thinking himself clever before he walked over to the register, glancing back once more. Hmm, the dress was maybe a bit short, but if something should make her a child again, that could work in her favor right?

And he had to remind himself of that, that unlike him, who the spirits had said he was permanently in this form, she had been shifted by greyfaces, who didn’t cast very many permanent spells. Didn’t she say it was a month? So no getting attached to this older version of herself. Easier said then done.

“Oh that won’t be a problem. I mean everything looks good on you right ?” Bri blurted out hardly even realizing what she was saying until it was all said and done. A wild blush took over her face and she could hear the shop girl trying to keep a giggle in. Oh boy … This wouldn’t end well. “I … i mean i always thought so … even as a child.” She hoped that would make it better, but she was doubtfull.

“Uhm yeah okay.” She managed hotly. Normally Brianna would rather go and see how much it had cost since she was definetly paying him back later on but she’d rather not go seing that she was blushing like mad. It was just better if she stayed back and tried to cool her head.

“Really, you think so? Well, thank you!” He couldn’t help the smirk that came to his lips, especially as he spied her blush. Even with his limited experience, he could almost understand what that meant. But then again, what did he promise himself? Furballs, this was going to be so much harder then he thought. Was there a way to ask Mako….no wait, bad idea. Mako wasn’t much better when it came to romance. Maybe Bolin…no again. He would want to know all the details. 

So, like most of the things he had discovered since becoming human, he would simply have to figure it out on his own. The price wasn’t too bad on the dress, especially with his newfound cash, and he grins as he walks back over to her, receipt tucked away where she couldn’t find it. “Now, I think with the time to go home and let me change, it will be time for you to discover your surprise!”

“Well i wouldn’t say so if i didn’t think so right ?” She smiled at him cheekily. She was more comfortable now that she wasn’t blushing lije a tomato.

“Sure. Buutt you know i really do think a surprise really isn’t neccessary i mean uhm .. well … Aww Pabu c’mon ? Pleassee tell me ?” She now threw him a small, innocent smile with wide eyes, batting her lashes and tugging at his sleeve lightly. “Pleeassee ?”

"I guess not, it's good you haven't learned to lie, makes people like you better." Except he lied fairly easily, when he felt it necessary  But still, he didn't want Brianna to start doing the same.  She had a better shot then he really did, and he didn't want her to ruin her chances.

Her begging made him laugh, as she behaved so cute, and he leaned in close, tilting his head as if considering and then shaking it. "Nope, besides, give me a few minutes to change and we'll be on our way. C'mon, I've never done a surprise before, let me have this one."

Now it was his turn to beg, pouting for her amusement, mimicking her face, though he didn't tug at her sleeve, instead, folding his hands as if pleading.

He listened as she explained about the pores, tying his sash back on, being oh so grateful that he didn’t have any items tucked away. That might have been embarrassing to have thrown it all to the floor like that just because he used it as bag. Seeing her drink her tea reminded him of his own, and he took a drink, grinning at the taste. “Hey, that’s good! So how come you know so much Quene?” Hopefully, she had never noticed that he avoided reading when possible, always taking longer or having to mouth the words for them to make sense.

She had noticed that when they went to the zoo but didn’t pay it no mind. After all, some of her own clients couldn’t read well, and some couldn’t read at all. It didn’t bother her any. “Well, I am older than you by a good few years. With age comes experience and all that jazz,” she chirped, taking another sip of her tea.

“So, did we want to head out to Aang Memorial Island now or after lunch?” she asked.

“You’re older then me? I keep forgetting that.” He grins, taking another long drink of the tea s he considered her other question, head tilting slightly in thought. “Before, I mean we did just eat, so might as well take advantage of the day while we can, right?”

And there was the bit of street rat, almost literally, coming to the forefront. He could live off that little snack as long as if it was a literal feast. “Do you need me to give you a few minutes to get ready or anything first?

“Just a few minutes to change is all I need,” she said, finishing her tea. If he wasn’t hungry she’d just get them something later. After all, there had to be food stands on the way back she could treat the both of them with.

“I’ll go ahead and do that. Feel free to look around, but if you could please leave that one covered.” She motioned to the large canvas that was covered in the corner. “Private piece for a client. He doesn’t want anyone to see it but him.”

She left the room then, trusting Pabu do to as she asked. Changing didn’t take long, and she came out in a pair of form fitting trousers and a dark green tunic. Aquene had left her hair down just because she didn’t feel like pigtails today. Her satchel went over a shoulder. “Ready, Pabu?”

He folded his arms, thinking himself clever before he walked over to the register, glancing back once more. Hmm, the dress was maybe a bit short, but if something should make her a child again, that could work in her favor right?

And he had to remind himself of that, that unlike him, who the spirits had said he was permanently in this form, she had been shifted by greyfaces, who didn't cast very many permanent spells. Didn't she say it was a month? So no getting attached to this older version of herself. Easier said then done.

He listened as she explained about the pores, tying his sash back on, being oh so grateful that he didn’t have any items tucked away. That might have been embarrassing to have thrown it all to the floor like that just because he used it as bag. Seeing her drink her tea reminded him of his own, and he took a drink, grinning at the taste. “Hey, that’s good! So how come you know so much Quene?” Hopefully, she had never noticed that he avoided reading when possible, always taking longer or having to mouth the words for them to make sense.

She had noticed that when they went to the zoo but didn’t pay it no mind. After all, some of her own clients couldn’t read well, and some couldn’t read at all. It didn’t bother her any. “Well, I am older than you by a good few years. With age comes experience and all that jazz,” she chirped, taking another sip of her tea.

“So, did we want to head out to Aang Memorial Island now or after lunch?” she asked.

"You're older then me? I keep forgetting that." He grins, taking another long drink of the tea s he considered her other question, head tilting slightly in thought. "Before, I mean we did just eat, so might as well take advantage of the day while we can, right?"

And there was the bit of street rat, almost literally, coming to the forefront. He could live off that little snack as long as if it was a literal feast. "Do you need me to give you a few minutes to get ready or anything first?

Open Roleplay "Caught"

With the colder weather, less people lingered in the parks and street corners, leaving Pabu with less then his usual customers. Mako kept pestering him to get a real job, and he had tried, but it was hard. It wasn't like he had bending to get at some of the better oppurtunities, and he didn't have really any book learning. Sure, he could read some and write, but it wasn't enough for most jobs. But he already knew Mako worried for Bolin and he didn't want him to worry about himself now too. It wasn't either of their faults that the Spirits had made Pabu human for whatever reasons. 

So, he did what he knew best after acrobatics, stealing. It was easy for him to sneak around, slipping though small window and it hadn't taken him long to learn how to pick a lock, the small kit hid in his sash or his soft soled boots. As it was, he was almost getting cocky with it, and this time, hadn't even bothered to cover his face as he crawled out of a window of yet another wealthy home, planning on calling it for a night.

Just then, someone called out after him. "STOP!" And for a moment he froze. "Who are you?"

She shook her head with a little laugh right after she thought they were out of Pabu's earshot "We really aren't dating ..." She looked at the girl expectantly as she grinned a little "He's cute though isn't he." The answer wasn't exactly what Bri had expecteed but she returned the grin "Yep. I mean ... kinda... Well ... I'm embarrassing myself ... I think i'm just going to change." Brianna couldn't help a nervous laugh as she stepped into the dressing room with the green dress that matched her eyes.

Pabu thankfully hadn't heard or else he would have been as red as his hair. Instead he busied himself by picking through the jewelry, checking for any sort of security and then putting it down. Maybe another time, but it was always risky to shoplift from a store. Much better just slipping into one of those wealthy homes and taking a few pieces that they probably didn't even miss. So his back had been turned as Brianna first stepped out, the shopgirl's quiet cough turning him around. "What's wron...wow...uh...that looks pretty on you Bri. You should get it." He kept mentally slapping himself, even as he felt his face grow hot. He did not have a crush on his friend, he was not crushing on his friend and thinking she was pretty..was he?

He nods, thinking it over. He didn’t know the differences between them, but he figured what ever watercolors were would probably be best on his face. “Thanks, oh, I’m thinking of painting my face like a fire ferret, draw in more people.” He grins, not realizing that he was thinking of the wrong paint to use. “So a basket shop and a record store? That’s a unique combination, that will make it easy to find.”

“Try grease paint — it’s made for faces,” she said. “These would flake off or suffocate the skin.” Aquene remembered reading something in one of the shops she frequented for art supplies saying something like that. Or maybe it was an article in the gazette.

“Grease paint? What, skin can suffocate? But we wear clothes, how does that not suffocate skin?” He actually scratched his head, his lack of understanding of science as a human showing through. Testing a thought, he untied the sash around his neck, putting it around his mouth, answering his own question. “Oh you can breathe through clothes, that makes sense now.”

She giggled at what he had done with the sash. It felt good to laugh so easily.  It seemed to be harder to do these days. “You have pores on your skin that keeps the skin ‘breathable’ in a sense. Make up covers these and makes it harder for the skin to breathe and cool as needed.” Aquene took a slow sip of her tea, savoring the flavor for a moment before swallowing. “The body is an amazing thing with what all it can do all on its own.

He listened to both of her explanation, feeling a bit proud when he heard he wasn’t that far off on why rain was bad. But then he heard about oil based paints, and looked at what was stored in the contraption. Something called gauche. “How many kinds of paints are there? These are the ones you would paint on a person, would you?”

The idea had just come to him, remembering pictures of clowns and circus performers, who would have their faces all painted up. That could be something he could do to drum up extra business. A grin came to his face, realizing he could paint himself to look like a fire ferret, then he could use his friend’s old tagline for him. “Where do you buy the paints anyhow?”

“There’s oil, acrylic, gauche, watercolor.. um… I think there are more, but those are the ones I use personally,” she answered. “I get them from a little shop in the market district… it’s… hmm..” Aquene tried to think of the location. “It’s near a basket shop and a record store. I’m afraid I can’t think of the exact street it’s on at the moment.”

“Why do you ask?”

“Ah gotcha, that seems a bit more practical.” He flashed  a smile, going over to the wooden contraption, this time poking it, letting himself take a look at it. He listened to the rest of her rambling, wondering why you had to stretch canvas out on a board. And why was  rain bad?

As always, the questions in his mind bubbled out, his curiosity unable to be ignored. “Okay, why do you have to stretch canvas, and why is rain so bad? Does it wash it out?” That would be a problem if it washed it out.

Ah, he never failed to disappoint. All the questions he had always made her smile. Not many people, it seemed, asked questions. “It helps to have the canvas on a frame sometimes — it’s easier to paint for one, and store.”

“As for the rain, if the paint is still wet it can smear or run when water gets on it.” She sighed quietly and tsked. “The only paint that doesn’t seem to happen with are oil based ones, but then those take forever to dry.” Aquene had always opted to leave those paints at home and used the gauche or acrylics.

“Yeah … borrow.” She chuckled a little. Didn’t girls like trying clothes on ? Well Bri thought, and hoped she did … but nothing was really definete to her. She knew she liked pretty clothes and she knew she really did want a newdress but she was just … nervous. There was also the fact that Pabu would be paying for the dress and Brianna didn’t know how much it would cost. When she took Pabu’s hand to get up, Bri made a mental note to herself to pay Pabu back for this one day.

“Well im no princess. Just same old Brianna the street rat.” She shrugged. People always called them that. Not only her but everyone on the streets. It wasn’t like they wanted to be there anyways and however much they didn’t show it to people, it did slightly hurt to be called that. “Besides i might get spoilt and that wouldn’t be good for you now would it.”

He didn’t much care how much it costed, figuring he could make it up somehow. Besides, he wanted her to enjoy herself. “Nah, how about this?” He snapped his fingers as if the idea was so clever. “How about Brianna, the street princess?” Another tug at her hair to tease her, and then he was simply pulling her along. “I won’t let you get spoilt, so quit worrying about it. I’ve got it covered.”

He even made it a point to go into one of those cheaper shops, not quite as glamourous, but still nice shop girls and pointed to Brianna. “I’m taking her out tonight, and she needs a new dress, think you can help us out?” The girl nods with a laugh, taking a critical look at Brianna, though a smile softens it. “Sure, I can help your girlfriend out.” Pabu turns red, trying to explain that they weren’t dating, his hands waving in front of his face. The shopgirl just nods, not believing him. “C’mon along deary, we’ll get you fixed up, now how do you feel about green?”

“That sound better.” She shot a wild grin at him. “Alright but don’t say i didn’t warn you okay ?” Bri said as she forced herself to ignore the annoying tug on the hair. Maybe he would stop it someday if she kept ignoring him ? Maybe …

She inhaled sharpyly as they walked into a shop. Even though Pabu had said he would take her to a cheep shop, the place looked kinda fancy. With a high ceiligand all. She shot a glare at Pabu before he started talking to the shop girl butthen gave it up as he wasn’t looking her way. 

“Green ? Y..Yeah green sounds great !” She plastered a smile across her face, turning sideways so Pabu, who was explaining to the shop girl that they weren’t dating, wouldn’t see her red face. She didn’t even try to explain, it would make things worse. She only hoped Pabu wouldn’t see her face … “Yep…. Green.”

He could see her trying not to be bothered by his tugging, only grinning wider. It was too much fun to tease her. "And yep, you warned me, so let's go and see what actually happens."

He never noticed the glare she shot him as he talked to the shop girl, trying to explain both how they're were not dating, only friends, and where they were going. Apparently, it was not normal to take a friend dancing. Finally, he just had to hope the girl got it as she walked off with Brianna, hoping it would be okay. He noticed her red face, but knowing his own was red, felt he had no right to tease. He would just have to hope for the best.
