Princess Ōyama Sutematsu (1860 – 1919) was a Japanese woman of the Meiji era. As a child, she survived the Battle of Aizu. Yamakawa was then sent to America for ten years as part of the Iwakura Mission to become the first Japanese woman to receive a college degree. Yamakawa spent her later years as a philanthoropist advocating for women’s education and volunteer nursing in Japan. Colorized and improved by the Digital Mix Company of Japan.
