As tempted as I am to know the meaning of the song, I am afraid of that robbing me of my own personal relevance to it. Beyond the ever-powerful, emotional voice of Pavarotti and the crying of the courses that feel like a thousand grips tightening your chest, not knowing Italian, as it in my case, makes it more romantic, more relevant, and always fitting.
This song was originally composed by the Italian singer Lucio Dalla in 1986. It’s been covered by over 30 artists over the years. Every single version is a completely different experience, maybe owing to the fact that I don’t understand the words. This is my personal favorite version of this absolutely beautiful song.
