As tempted as I am to know the meaning of the song, I am afraid of that robbing me of my own personal relevance to it. Beyond the ever-powerful, emotional voice of Pavarotti and the crying of the courses that feel like a thousand grips tightening your chest, not knowing Italian, as it in my case, makes it more romantic, more relevant, and always fitting.
This song was originally composed by the Italian singer Lucio Dalla in 1986. It's been covered by over 30 artists over the years. Every single version is a completely different experience, maybe owing to the fact that I don't understand the words. This is my personal favorite version of this absolutely beautiful song.
Shawn Lane might be just another name for a lot of people, but for many others that's the name of one of the greatest guitar virtuosos that ever lived. Biased as my opinion may be, I see Shawn Lane as a guitarist/musician that did not receive the recognition a musician with such beautiful sense of melody deserves. Possessing the ability to play, arguably, faster than any guitarist throughout history, the way Shawn commanded the instrument was nothing short of phenomenal, which was very evident in his minimalistic approach for someone with his abilities.
Serving the purpose of this blog, I'll limit my talk about him as a person and divert my attention to the musicality, feel, and everything else that makes this track, especially the live version, very special to me.
The first thing someone might ask about this track is: Who is Lisa? Is there a story behind a song that is filled with so much emotion? Yes, Lisa was Shawn's sister who, after a tragic car accident in the mid 80s, had passed away. Does knowing the story really adds something new to the experience of the song or takes some of it away? Personally, I think it does neither. Listening to the song, you'll hear an undeniable sadness that desperately seeks to surface, yet is being tenaciously repressed. An attempt to show strength? Maybe. But, more pronounced than the sadness that is floating in the background, the very heartfelt, melodious guitar part sings love. A love that has been severed by fate at one end, with a frail heart gently holding on to it and vowing it'll never forget at the other. Knowing Lisa's story is an ingredient that amplifies the message the song already serenades. A message of love and melancholy.
Introduction
Music, like other forms of art, carries an array of meanings and emotions that I believe to be subjective. The feelings a song, a chord, a note triggers within each one of us is a unique effect of that cannot be spontaneously generated wholly in any other person. That beautiful diversity of perception resulted in the birth of "music discussion" or "talking music". A discussion that is not revolving around music theory or the teachings of writing music, but rather around the inspirations, state of mind, and emotions that surround it.
I am starting this blog with the purpose of talking music; to talk about what I hear and how that reflects on me, and hopefully get you to take part in the discussion and share your views and sentiments.
